AFC Hornchurch came from behind to beat Farnborough 3-2 in an action-packed replay to progress to the Second Round of The FA Trophy on Wednesday night, setting up a tie with Conference side Grimsby.

Hornchurch, who play in the Isthmian League, one division below Farnborough, started the better of the two sides and were awarded a penalty after Martin Tuohy was brought down in the box by last defender Doug Bergqvist, who was sent off. Tuohy scored from the spot but Farnborough got back into the game and were 2-1 up at half time thanks to goals by Philip Appiah and Reece Connolly.

The visitors made the extra man advantage count and reasserted themselves in the second half. Tuohy scored again to draw the game level on 58 mins and Lewis Smith scored the winner with 17 minutes to go.

Hornchurch boss Jimmy McFarlane thought his team responded well to being behind. He said: "We started really brightly but took our foot off the pedal after we scored and they took the game to us. But we came out after the break a different team and it was all one way traffic after that."

The victory was Hornchurch's 11th win out of 12 away games this season and McFarlane is confident his team's great away form will stand them in good stead against Grimsby in the next round.

"We'll give them the respect they're due but we're not going to go there with any fear. We have players like Jonathan Hunt who has played over 100 games in the Premiership and Tommy Black who turned out in the Champions League for Arsenal and they certainly won't be in awe of the occasion."
