Assistant Referee - David Griffin

CW1975

Recommended Posts

David was taken ill whilst officiating at Bedfont Sports on Saturday.

David has been the assistant referee at both our charity games so far and given his time up at no expense.

I have made enquiries and have been told that he is on the mend and hopes to be officiating again in January.

Get well soon David.

I spoke to David today. He is at home, having suffered what was diagnosed as a heart attack, following which he had two stents inserted in hospital. The indications are that he will make a full recovery but has to rest up for the time being.

He hopes to be back officiating next season or even towards the end of this season.

He would like to say thank you for all the kind messages and also thank Bedfont Sports and the people who looked after him at the time of the attack and for procuring the speedy medical attention.

So we dig out the officials !

I just wonder if anyone has said some derogatory remarks about David in the past. You see we're only human, and when situations like this arise, do we actually regret comments made about officials..... I repeat, it's a hobby to these guys who do the very best just like footballers and management, remember without officials we have no beautiful game !

This situation puts everything into perspective, and maybe, just maybe we should give our officials some slack, 'cos i assure you the officials make less mistakes than the players...............

Get well soon David !

An update on this (as featured in the weekly bulletin):

You will re-call that one of our valued assistants, David Griffin suffered a heart attack whilst lining at Bedfont Sports before Christmas and had to be rushed to hospital. David is making a good recovery but, on doctor’s advice, has now had to announce his retirement as an official, after eighteen years service to the League and no less than fifty-two years as a referee.

He intends to keep in touch with the League by watching CCL matches from time to time and our best wishes are with him.

On a personal note, David popped along to Frimley Green recently when I was refereeing their reserves, and it was great to see him there and looking chipper!
