Well done to South Park

I can't praise South Park enough for today's victory.

They were energetic, exciting and full of danger in the first half. They should have had a penalty early on when the right back Jerry O'Sullivan was obstructed in the box. The lino flagged but was overruled by the referee. This just spurred Park into further action and other than one missed chance by the visitors, the first half was all about the hosts. Justin David headed in the first goal from a cross after good work by O'Sullivan and David Smith down the right on the half hour. Just five minutes later, they made it 2-0 from a penalty by D Smith after Guscott was fouled during a corner.

Just before the second half there was a bizarre incident pointed out to me by BAWA from this parish. The Diss GK and right back had a running argument as they came back out onto the pitch which culminated in the keeper punching the mouthy defender in the face. He went down for several minutes but then just got back up and carried on as if nothing had happened. Maybe that's what they do in Norfolk!

Either way, the second half was a much tighter affair but this just meant Park had to show the other side of their game and that's defence (they have the fourth best in the league). Even when Diss changed formation and piled men forward they held strong despite several players seemingly playing on one leg. They did manage one back though as Jason Cole scored a great goal after a good save from James Wastell. BAWA came off the bench to nearly secure things with a shot that hit the bar. The last 10 minutes of normal time and 5 of extra time were agony for Park supporters as the players tired but fought with every last breath to keep out the opponents and they did to the joy of most of the 183 spectators.

Terrific effort overall. Special shout outs to some of the guys from here - Milesy had a stormer at the back as did Molly filling in at left back. Four years ago Justin David and David Smith were part of the Merstham squad that got to the last 8 of the Vase and just two games from Wembley. Could that bit of history repeat itself?

Cheers bommy and everyone. Strange game, was like they were two different teams, first half we dominated, second period we could barely get out our half! Hard fought win and looking forward to the next round.

Well done Park, a great achievement. Our opponents meet Diss in the services on the journey and, by all accounts, they fancied themselves a bit. As we say at the Ranch "Tell them B****x.

Don't wish to steal your thunder, what a game at Rectory today!

Herne Bay turned up in all their glitz and glory as the darling's of the Kent league, slightly arrogant and full on themselves maybe, but no doubt a very good side.

Within 5 mins of the start they fully understood that the CCL has a lot to offer. The Villa ran them ragged for 30 mins, and Levi King was the width of the crossbar away from scoring, what everybody in the ground would agree, was the best goal they have ever seen. Simply amazing.

The 1st half belong to us. We missed 3 or 4 really good chances. Our visitors were the better side in the second period. Extra time was a complete dog-fight. Wonderful stuff!! Can't wait for the replay Weds if it's as half as good as this.

Aside from the game I would like to thank the Herne Bay officials and supporters. An utter pleasure. This day was how football at our level should be. Just a great day. Two good sides slugging it out, loads of hospitality, and the prospect of a great match in the return. Happy Days!!!!

I skipped that page when I read it but now I've looked, I realised that one of the girls mentioned is the daughter of a colleague of mine and her husband, Mervyn Nesbitt, is involved in the management down there. Small world.
