Just reading Todays Romford Recorder when i came across this article in there "This week in History" section.I wonder how many actually turned up

FORTY YEARS AGO

"Extra police were set to be drafted in to cope with the traffic chaos caused by an FA Cup match between Romford and Fourth Division Gillingham"

"Transport for London said there would be chaos on the Roads with buses running up to half an hour late"

"it warned there would be heartaches for drivers with bottlenecks and queues across the borough, despite 500 extra car parking spaces"

"The Second Round FA Cup tie was expected to draw 100'000 supporters. But with just 280 car parking spaces at the grounds, club managers warned of nightmares on the road"

HA HA 100'000 bunch of jokers

I think there was just under ten thousand people at the match, which is more than both our clubs combined now get all season.

The attendance was 8357 - it was not an all ticket match and the actual attendance was well short of expectations. The result was one nil to Gillingham. There was not all that many from Gillingham, probably not more than 2000,though it was not easy to tell as there was no segregation.

The highest crowd at Brooklands was 17,600 against Southall in the Amateur Cup, though it was said that when Romford played Gillingham in the FA Cup in the 40s that the crowd on that day was a lot higher.

For the visit of Northampton in the FA Cup in 1960 the crowd was initially reported as 13,000 but later officially quoted as just over 11,000.

For the visit of Watford the following season the crowd was 12,226.

The only other cup match against a league club was Luton n 1965 - the crowd was about 8000.

The highest attendance for a match against Chelmsford was 6138 (home) and 7124 (away) though there was a reported 10,000 crowd at a league cup match at Chelmsford.

The highest Southern Lge crowd was 8786 against Yeovil - this was initially reported as 11,000 but reduced as they had counted the stand and paddock figures twice.
