Page Cannot Be displayed???

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I am getting a few reports of users getting a 'page cannot be displayed' error.

If you are getting this problem on this site - could you help me to track it down by doing the following...

1) Delete your cookies by going to http://forums.nonleague.com/mycookies.php

2) Log back in

3) Running the tests at http://forums.nonleague.com/browser_check.php - all should pass - and your computer clock should be near enough the same as our server time, which is updates by an atomic clock. 20 - 30 seconds out is fine - 3 or 4 minutes could cause problems.

4) If running a XP, 2000, ME or 98 ensure that your PC is up to date with all the critical updates http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com - this is recommended anyway to avoid getting infected with worms etc., on your computer. We recommend using IE 6 and above - http://www.microsoft.com/ie or one of the alternative browsers like Mozilla Firebird - http://www.mozilla.org/products/firebird/ or Opera - http://www.opera.com/

5) When completed - next time the page is not diplayed - please carry on with point 6.

6) Post a reply in this thread with the following information....

  • PC or MAC
  • Operating System (95, 98, 98 Second Edition, ME, 2000, XP, etc...
  • Browser & version number (look under help / about in your browser menus)
  • What were you doing when the page was not displayed - making a post, sending a PM, logging on, clicking on a link (which one?), viewing who's online etc.
  • ISP name & type (dial-up with btinternet, broadband with pipex, broadband with First ADSL etc.)

If there is a pattern, hopefully your responses will help us track it down. However if your computer is not up to date, with various revisions that M$ issue & fails any of the tests, then we are on a slippery slope to start with.

The first few points should only take a few minutes to complete - and with all the various critical updates completed - you will be more secure whilst on the Internet anyway.

I have not been able to replicate the problem yet - but am trying with various computers to try and duplicate it. If I still cannot track the problem down, I will update the entire site.

Your help is appreciated. thumbsup.gif

I get the following results from the browser check:

Cookies Cookies can be set and read. (via HTTP headers) PASS

Referrer-H The URL of the referring page can be read. (host name) FAIL

Referrer-HS The URL of the referring page can be read. (host name + script name) FAIL

Referrer-HSQ The URL of the referring page can be read. (host name + script name + query string) FAIL

Javascript Javascript within a web page can be executed. PASS

Javascript read cookie Cookies can be read using Javascript. PASS

Javascript set cookie Cookies can be set using Javascript. PASS

Clock The server and client clocks agree within 15 minutes. (uses Javascript) PASS

My configuration is PC, Windows XP Home Edition, IE Version 6.0, BT Broadband.

It happens when I am trying to close a thread, also when replying to private messages (but the message is still sent) and adding something in the shout box (still added).

If I disable Norton AV the problem disappears but obviously this is not a very sensible solution.
