Wednesday 16th November

BERKS & BUCKS SENIOR TROPHY First Round

2-1* Wantage Town v Holmer Green

A report on this one from another's Forum:

Berks & Bucks Trophy

Wantage Town 2 Holmer Green 1 (aet. 1-1 after 90mins)

Entry: £6

Attendance: about 25? (was hoping someone else would've posted by now!)

Plenty of chearful hoppers in attendance here, including Dr.Love, TheWavendonian and JimmyJazz, finding much humour in some classic pitch-side hoardings, including one for the south's leaders in 'pumping concrete'. Unfortunately, Wantage no longer resemble the side who won last season's Hellenic championship, and they made heavy going of slowly grinding down resolute yet limited lower opposition, a result made more stark by the fact that Holmer finished with just eight players and yet still almost leveled at the end.

With the ground positioned in gorgeous countryside on the southern edge of the town, there is very little chance of planning permission for extra facilities or expansion: so despite all their recent achievements, by not opting for promotion to step 4 most of last season's squad have moved upwards with other clubs, leaving Wantage Town looking very ordinary this season. Obviously promotion at this level is not always a positive move, but there's an excellent example just a few miles down the road of what can happen when it goes well, with local rivals Hungerford Town sitting at the top of the Southern S&SW just two years after their Hellenic championship.

Well you're not Eric as youd hope a few believe

What makes you so sure that Carl the truth Williams isn’t Eric Turner, Eric is very set in his ways and although I’m sure he has put a brave face on this season and professionally got on with his Secretarial duties I’m sure he wasn’t overly impressed at the way the former Padbury United people have breezed into his beloved Club and rode roughshod over everything.

I am so intrigued with this silly arguement that i have registered with this forum. I really don't think it is Eric,he has seen many comings and goings throughout his many years of involvement with Ampthill, and i'm sure that had he not agreed with the involvement with the former Padbury guys then he would have said so before.Anyway i have been involved with the club for many years and used to play for them back in the United counties days. I now watch Ampthill as a fan and go to most games home and away. I can only speak for myself, but i think this season has been a breath of fresh air for the club, and Craig and his team have approached everything in the most professional way. I always look forward to the games and i really think we could get promotion this season along with some silver ware from the cup games. Heres to a great game tomorrow and lets hope we can advance to the next stage of the Vase. I don't know who Carl the truth Williams is,although i have suspicians.I just hope he would have the balls to introduce himself.

Former No 9 - Maybe Eric did voice his displeasure to Mr Stuttard but he was talked round as he just wants a quiet life, you're right that Eric has seen many comings and goings over the years at Ampthill Park and has been a great servant to the Club but for some people success isn't everything as it usually comes at a price doesn't it.

It's just that the way you talk about Eric it seems you must really know him and speak to him regular to understand how he feels about the new management team and playing squad.

You don't though do you! You just, for some reason, try to wind people up by spouting nonsence.

No4 - I do know Eric though and what makes him tick, he’s an excellent Club Secretary but, like I said, can be a bit laid back at times, as a result he doesn’t always like to go that extra mile and wouldn’t appreciate being pestered by Craig Bicknell at 2.55 on a Friday afternoon to register a player for the next day which I’m sure has happened quite a bit this season.

Winslow Boy - Surely that's one for Craig Bicknell to answer, not me

Wouldn't worry or expect him to make sense, Rhodes is just doing his usual make some sort of boll0x up.

I didn't realise you two were such good friends. I'll make sure I mention to Eric that you know him so well and what makes him tick.

Your assumptions are also very wrong - so once again (as you so expertly do) you prove you're the forums answer to Henry's Cat!

No4 - Don't get me wrong as I'm not criticising Eric in the slightest, all Club Secretaries have their own unique approach to doing the job and can't all be John Bacon's.
