staines_rebel_Jr
Slough: warrington, Brown, NBH, Woozley, Perkins, Coyne, Sinclair, Swift, Abbey, Sonner, Murphy. currently 1-0 up. From the twitter feeds sounds like we could have been up by a few more goals but neither team is being helped by the bobble. Abbey got the goal. Ian
Woodford very much still in it and unlucky not to be awarded a penalty after a tug back by Wooz. Good finish by Abbey for the goal.
Nathan
1-0 h/t. Just about deserve it IMHO, but the game has fizzled out during the last 20 minutes. Warrington nearly let in a howled, but has made a couple of top class saved. We've had more chances however, so hard to tell which way this will go. Mr Rebel
there will come a time where not playing nearer our best wont result in a win but isn't it great how we are grinding out wins against the lower teams. such a clear desire all through the squad to get a victory at the moment though and in a way the Warrington injury inspired us and gave us the kick up the backside we needed to stamp our authority on the game again fair play to Warrington for playing on though it really doesnt look good injury wise. hopefully its not too long. the team done superb to keep the ball from our box that last 15 mins. hopefully we can close out games more often like that as we usually let it get real nervy. they did miss an open goal not long after the injury though. we may of course be keeperless Tuesday potentially though as DJZ is away on international duty i believe could be wrong who would have thought Coyne would score so many winners especially this early in the season!!! the guy has been ridiculously good for us this season. what a shame it seems he is leaving football temporarily at least at the end of the season by the sounds of it WE ARE TOP OF THE LEAGUE SAY WE ARE TOP OF THE LEAGUE!!!!!!!!! Nathan
On the whole, we were quite lucky to get the win today. We just about shaded the first half, but Woodford always looked dangerous, Warrington nearly gifted them a goal and they should have had a penalty. For much of the second half we weren't at the races and looked as though we were about to collapse, but Paul Coyne's goal changed everything and for the final 10 minutes, we were all over them. Just how many times can Coyne be relied upon to bail out our completely ineffective forward line? Irishadrian
A Rebel and a Saint
Got the win, got the 3 points. Well done to the team for dealing with Woodford's resurgence in the second half and Warrington's injury. First half was pretty comfortable but Woodford came at us at the start of the second half and caused some trouble. Bringing on Burnell seemed to make a difference and the last 10-15mins were our best of the game including Coyne's goal. I would say bring on the moaners but it seems that has already started. I'm happy with the 3 points, much more important than the performance. To win this league we will have to win ugly and displays like today show we can do that. A point clear after Bedworth beat Biggleswade 4-2 (with 3 penalties and an own goal!), and Bedworth are playing Tuesday too. Need a win Tuesday to keep up this momentum, COYR! I'm happy with the 3 points, much more important than the performance. I assume you are referring to my post there ARAAS? I don't think that was moaning! As it happens, I (having seeked counsel via Facebook) agree with you on this one. The big question is: will we still be top after the absolutley massive games against AFC Hayes, St. Neots and Biggleswade over the next fortnight? Cookham Rebel
My one and only post on today's game... Wasn't great but we won so who cares, we would not have won that game today last season... We all see the game differently and Nathan is maybe right about our forward line but it's not all about the front 2 scoring goals, it's a team game and whilst we are grinding out results I don't think anyone can complain, no team that wins leagues plays great week in week out, it's about playing well and winning and playing ugly and winning!!! Paul Coyne is now showing the sheer quality that makes him the best midfielder in this division in my opinion, he could be the player that drags us by the scruff of the neck to the league title... 3-5-2 makes us more difficult to play against and we won't be so gung ho in attack, just what we need after leaking goals like a sieve for the previous 2 seasons and we still have enough fire power to overcome teams... So, 3 points and still top of the league, not bad really is it?!?!? CR Irishadrian and Nathan
Harmston Rebel
You are absolutely right. Top of the league and we are not having a laugh, we want to win it! It would be great to see us lift the team and give them that extra edge to push them home sometimes. Yes, it could have been different today, but it was not and over the match 2-1 is a reasonable result. Many of us felt that we should have had a penanlty when the ball was played by hand, but the lino flagged for a push instead! Tough next four games so let's hear for the Rebels! Irishadrian
I am very pleased, of course, that we are top of the league but I remember posting before the season started that I thought we had a very soft fixture list for the first third of the season and thats how it has turned out.We have won 9 games and the current league positions of all the teams we have beaten are; 7th,10th,11th,14th,15th,16th,18th,20th and 21st. We havent played a single team that will be up there and up for it as the season progresses I, like others who have posted, am also a bit concerned that we continue to grind out unimpressive wins against the divisions poorer teams Lets hope the players understand that the really important games requiring maximum effort still lie ahead I am sure we have the best squad in the league and used properly can be champions. Cookham Rebel
I was only going to post once on this thread but needed to respond after Irishadrian's post... Any team can only beat what is put in front of them, and the teams we've beaten so far may not finish in the top 5 but these games are the hardest to win due to the opposition denying us the space to play the game we want to play, against teams like St Neots, Bedworth, Biggleswade etc, there will be more space due to the teams wanting to win the league or make the play offs playing a more expansive style of play.... I'm adamant that last season we probably have lost 2 or 3 more games already... This team is different, the wins against Banbury and Boreham Wood prove they can play the pretty way but 80% of the time, in the league we are in, they will have to win the ugly way and at the moment they are doing just that.... For all we know, some of the teams we've played, could be in the mix, it's to early to tell!!!
Irishadrian
Hi Cookham Rebel Nice to see a second post from you There really is no need to restrict your contributions Im sure most of our members look forward to them and any they dont like they have as much right as you to respond and no more right than you.I agree with you that its too early to make predictions but I dont think its too early to comment on trends We arent soundly beating poor teams and youve been at the games and seen how many chances are going begging I remember how poorly we performed against the top teams last season 4 out of 24 points against Arlesey, Hitchin, Daventry and Rugby for example and we simply must be a lot sharper against the top teams. Cookham Rebel
Thank you Irish Adrian... I agree with you to a certain degree but we won't, and neither will be any top team, soundly beat the lesser teams in any division week in week out. You'll get the odd hammering here and there but 99% of the time it will be about winning by the finest margins... This is due to the fact that the lesser teams have nothing to lose and everything to gain against clubs like Slough, if they lose 5-0 nobody would be surprised so why not have a go and make it difficult like Woodford did today, against other teams at their level the difference in performance would be there for all to see... I personally believe we are stronger than last season and I can see us picking up 4 points against St Neots, 4 against Bedworth and 6 against Biggleswade. The simple reason I think this is because the players will raise their game and with players like Warrington, NBH, Woozely, Perkins, Coyne and Abbey, we have leaders all over the pitch who I personally believe won't allow what happened against Hanworth Villa happen again as they know how badly they let the club down... COME ON YOU REBELS!!!
3spirit
The beauty of our squad this year is that we have options to play different styles/systems/tactics and competition for places throughout the team. Take today's game we set out 3-5-2 and edged the 1st half to go in at half time 1-0 up. Ben Abbey took his goal well. At times, though,in that first half, the whole team looked lethargic and slow off the mark. The weird thing was that our midfield looked all over the shop at times,Danny Murphy was particularly guilty of this, straying off of the wing back role, Steve Perkins in my view seemed too forward and Stuart Swift seemed unsure where his position was, yet,we looked good on the counter attack and could have come in 2-0 up if we had been a bit more organised. Woodford for all their effort looked a mid-table team. The best thing about Woodford was their physio ! I'm surprised Woodford players weren't feigning injury more ! lol ! In the latter part of the 2nd half, after Woodford had equalised ,we bucked our ideas up and the substitions Steve Bateman made brought the rewards we deserved. Danny Burnell looked keen to impress and Adam Martin and Charlie Mpi added much needed pace to the team.I was also pleased that Steve B. put the subs on earlier than he normally does, this gave us plenty of time to get the winning goal. So in the end we ground out another win. IrishAdrian is right to highlight that we haven't played the top teams yet and Cookham Rebel is right to say we have turned over two Premier division sides, so we can beat the better teams. This is where our bench of subs can make a huge difference and having players hungry to get their places back in the team makes for exciting football. If I have one concern it is about the pace of Brown,Bowden-Haase and Woozley together. However, for sheer prescence they certainly look the part and opposing teams will certainly be daunted by the prospect of facing them.I think it's no co-incidence that Slough are doing better this year by having taller, more imposing players in the team. This is one of the main factors why Bury Town was so successful two seasons ago. We also still have Simon Sweeney,Adam Logie,Chris Herron and Sean Byrne who can all make a huge impact to the team,in their own inimitable way.Good to see Sam Bateman is still around. He is under-rated by his dad ! Any news on George Coyle?
Nathan
It's all well and good being top at this stage, and I hope this will give the team a huge confidence boost (it certainly makes a nice change from playing catch-up at fifth!); but lets not count our chickens before they hatch! Over the past 2 seasons, we've developed a habit of grinding out performances this this one (though not always with the same result) against these sorts of teams, then promptly getting hammered by the bigger teams. The next fortnight I think will be one of the most important of the season, and could make or break it. It will show how far we've come as a team compared to the previous two years. Already we've shown signs that we have progressed i.e. many more clean sheets, not capitulating under pressure and somehow hitting back against the run of play. Let's go the full mile and start getting some good results against the top teams! COYRs!!!!
Irishadrian
Cookham Rebel You are right that we were losing a lot more last season in fact by the first week of November we had lost six so cause for cautious optimism The difference of course is the quality of the defence we have this season Last season after 13 games we had scored 24 goals this year after 13 games we have scored 25. I cant agree that the top teams dont soundly beat some of the worst teams Arlesey's aggregate last season was 108-34 Hitchin's 107-44 some serious beatings in there. Martin
Who scored our first goal yesterday Nathan? I could have sworn it was a striker but perhaps I was watching the wrong game and obviously only 21 goals between Sonner, Burnell and Abbey is massively disappointing. In no way whatsoever. The role of the striker is to convert chances created for them by the rest of the team - they seem to be doing a bloody good job of that at the moment. And without Burnell sniffing around forcing the keeper into a scrambling save Coyne wouldn't have been able to get the winner. I thought we were well worthy of the win. First twenty minutes of the first half we were well on top and were infortunate not to add to Abbey excellent goal. The start of the second half was scrappy and we lost control of the game. They equalised but after Warrington's injury we were outstanding. We immediately went down the other end and scored a vital goal and then controlled the game and possession of the ball protecting the goal superbly. I hope Warrington's injury isn't too bad as he has been excellent. But Paul Coyne was utterly superb running the game in midfield and popping up with another vital goal. MOM by a mile. The important thing is getting the result and we've done that. The next two months are massive though, lots of big games coming up against the teams in and around us. If we can continue to grind out results like this we will find ourselves in a very strong position come the new year. Come on you Rebels!
Cookham Rebel
When you compare the teams during Bateman's reign, and I'm not including the team he inherited from Sweetman: 1st full season we basically had the tried and trusted Bateman players from previous clubs and we were all grateful at how successful that season ended up being albeit the disappointment of the play off final defeat against a very good Chesham team! Last season, we were a team in transition with a lot of new faces and we started well but hit a blip, after 13 games last season we had won 5 drew 1 and lost 7, and I don't think that was a great surprise as it was basically a new team, we then recovered and of our last 29 league games we won 19 drew 3 and lost 7, that's 60 points and arguably championship winning form but our early season form well and truly bit us on the proverbial so to speak... This season we have a settled squad with a few quality additions and barring Warrington and Brown are familiar to us from previous seasons under Bateman, at the moment we are baring the fruits of continuity in playing staff! We have already taken points off teams we failed to take points off last season, the lesser teams so to speak which I think is a gauge of the progress this team has made! If we were to now add 60 points to the 29 we already have, that will probably be enough to win this division.... I know this is only comparing last season from the point we are at now but I don't think we've got out of 3rd gear yet and this team will only get better, the forwards we have score goals, the midfielders are industrious, creative and tenacious, and our defenders defend but can also play a bit... I know there is a long way to go and a lot can happen, but there is a sense that when watching the team at the moment that even when the chips are down their is still the inner belief that as long as they keep it tight and stay disciplined/organised, someone in the team is good enough to nick a winning goal... All in all, the mark of a good side that is still progressing and improving! CR Mr Rebel
Don Juan DeMarcus
Was laid up with a gastric bug and I know I didn't see it but nonetheless 3 points is all that was needed! Great to see coyne score again he has been superb this season! I personally would be happy with us to play "badly" for the rest of the season and win every game.... Maybe I'm just not a purest!
