Slough v Rugby

Mixed emotions after this one - an extremely comfortable 4-0 win, without ever getting out of 1st gear.

Just the sort of result needed after Tuesday, but Rugby clearly gave up after the third goal, and had absolutely no bite upfront whatsoever.

Fantastic result today. Especially pleasing for the likes of Brown, Abbey, Swift and man of the match Perkins for their performances today given they haven't had a run of games recently. Mpi was also lucky not to score straight after coming on.

A clean sheet to top things off too. 3rd in the league and 1 point off top, things aren't that bad are they?

Feeling a bit under the weather so missed the game today, BLAST ! Sounds like a convincing win and just the tonic we need after the FA cup letdown. Was particular pleased to hear that Steve Perkins played as a holding midfielder and played well, as I'm surprised we haven't tried this option sooner. Nice to see Ben Abbey get a run out too, just goes to show we don't always need Burnell/Sonner partnership to get a win !

Does anyone know where Adam Logie is ? As he's not been involved in the last three games and it would be a shame if he's departed for another team.

Heard Alex Brown was at right back. How was he in this position?

Heard today that Logie is on his honeymoon, not sure if that's rumour or otherwise though.

Brown didn't really play right-back, was a 3-5-2 with him covering the right side of defence. When the wing-back was unable to cover.

Just had a message from Therese & Steve (Danny Murphy's Mum & Dad)

After checks by the paramedic's , all seams well and she was taken into the board room for some TLC !

Just a combination we believe of not eating or drinking for a while... and standing in the cold.

we all wish her well....

Nathan, strange views. I thought we were very much in 1st. gear and that Rugby gave it a go. Our defence was much more solid, which is why they didn't threaten much and our players turned in a good shift. All in all much more like it against a side that will be there or thereabouts next April.

Disappointed they brought next to no support, because they, at least to me, are one of the bigger clubs in this league.

Bernie - use your head - Nathan was refering to Dannys young lady not being too well, along side the solid win - hence mixed emotions.

Good to see the best of both sides of Slough today with good performances on and off the field.

The last few games go to show that sticking with a "winning" team does not always bring the results and at tiimes changes are needed.

I was at the game today and yes!!~ I thought Steve Perkins had a very good game considering he hasn’t been near the first XI in a while (as did Brownie and Abby). Also learnt after the game that Perko man marked Alan Shearer in the FA Cup tie between Stevenage and Newcastle in 1998 and by all accounts did a pretty good job (in the home tie anyway!!).

Today I thought we reacted really well to an abject performance in midweek, we tried something different, dare I say a plan B, and it worked very well for us. I see no reason why this group of players can’t go on and win this league if they really want it.

good all round performance and thoroughly deserved win. finally we found a way to kill off a team which we have threatened a lot this season without really ever kicking on and scoring more goals

considering he has hardly played Perkins was superb in midfield. great to have Brown back in and he too didnt seem short of fitness and played well

in fairness we rode our luck a bit at times 1st half at 1-0 up and they hit the post and had a few cleared from inside 6 yard area

2nd half we was so comfortable though and cruised home. this was partly due to the determination of the players and that we were pressing them hard from the front. Perkins sitting in midfield allowed the midfielders to roam more with an insurance policy in Perkins and 3 other defenders to stop the break

not quite sure what happened but glad to hear Danny Murphy's girlfriend is seemingly ok. quite a strange situation with the game going on while Danny understandably had a much more important matter. strange one as as he left the pitch the ref had to play on i guess.

anyway well done to all players and management. superb performance after a difficult loss on Tuesday. also great to see such great shows of team spirit and unity at full time by those who hadnt played. sitting in a strong position in the league now

COME ON YOU REBELS!!!

I have to make a confession here - I didn't know about Danny Murphy's wife until I got home and read this thread, but glad to hear that all is okay! I did wonder why he ran off the pitch as soon as the final whistle went.

I had mixed emotions because although it was a good 4-0 win, I can't honestly say we had to break sweat to get it (without wanting to take anything away from the players). Rugby hit the post in the first half, and that was about it. They seem to have transformed from a side that we really struggled against only 6 weeks ago, into one of the worst sides I have seen at this level.

It wasn't hard to see why they are on a bad run of form at the moment, but I am also glad that we weren't still wallowing about what happened on Tuesday.

As Heavy Trucker says, it was just the confidence booster needed. Hopefully we can go onwards and upwards from here!

I think that was one of the best things today. Danny Burnell was clearly upset at not getting on and that's good. We want players to be fed up at not playing. It was also brilliant to see how all the players were pleased for Ben, getting his chance and scoring. Also, the players really responded to NBH getting his goal too. Bodes well.

I thought that Bateman picked the best team to win today. Perkins sitting infront of the back 3 could be very interesting against "lesser" oppositions as it means the more creative midfeild players can roam more without having to worry as much when they lose the ball because Perkins will cover.

Thought it was right Abbey was given the chance today, as Burnell had been a bit off form recently and Mpi had already been given his chances.

A good confidence boost after the cup exits!!!

only two more cups to get out of then we can focus on the league =]

(Red insure cup + Berks and Bucks- i think both will be against Chesham)

Lots of positives today. I thought Rugby were poor and clearly lacking in confidence, but to a large degree that's because we made them look poor.

Bates got the team selection and tactics spot on in my view. The back three had good games and Sinclair and Murphy were able to bomb forward and attack, whereas they were stifled against Hanworth. Steve Perkins had an exceptional game in midfield as the anchor, his experience really showing. The system meant Rugby's threat was nullified. It was also good to see us actually go on and convert pressure into goals - four today, could have been six or seven with a bit of luck.

I expect Dan Burnell is frustrated and disappointed, but he's not been at his best recently and Ben Abbey deserved his chance - it's a squad game and we'll need everyone over the course of a long season - but he'll be back, his goal record speaks for itself.

Thanks,Tom. Hope you're right about Logie.

I'm glad Steve Bateman has gone back to the 3-5-2,as with the players we have,I think it suits the type of expansive, attacking, passing football we can play and also protects our defence, You have cover in every position ie Sweeney for Sinclair or any of the back three, Herron/Swift for Murphy. Logie/Coyne/Woozley for Perkins holding role, etc.

Having three centre midfielders,it certainly gives us the chance for one or two to create the chances for our strikers and to take the game to the opposition.

I take it that Coyne and Swift were with Perkins in midfield yesterday? I like that balance and think Stuart Swift can prove detractors wrong in this role.I think he is perfectly suited to play as the main creative player in a midfield three and think it suits him better rather than the role of orthodox left winger.

Steve Bateman was spot on yesterday dropping Danny Burnell to the bench,as Ben Abbey [and Charlie Mpi] deserve their chance and keeps the strikers hungry to play. Burnell had been lacking of late but you know he will want to prove Bateman wrong when he gets his opportunity in the team again.

At last,we are seeing the rewards of a competitive and seemingly united squad. Long may this continue.
