Fair enough Milesy but please do pick your words carefully. Mr Kitchen is a decent ref by my view but I know a number on this forum will think otherwise and that is it in a nutshell. Opinions.

You must say hello next time I catch a game of yours as most of the time you have spoken to me is when I have given something you do not like :)

maybe a lot of the problem with refs is that alot have never played the game or did but were just not very good at it.

where as some decisions will look by any player to be a good hard tackle a ref will deem it a foul!!

which is also why refs maybe have a problem with talking to players on the pitch ie the banter side of it or generally respecting a player througout the game ! respect is earnt an if refs dont give it how on earth are they going to expect it back!

im sure i remember playing against kroons many moons ago in the cambo sunday league an he used to run about a lot  i was at wheatsheaf , heatherside pub name is escaping me badly!?? an watching the queens!!!

Blimey that was a long time ago Newbie. I packed up playing 16 years ago :)

Good Hard Tackles are an interesting subject. When you touch the player before the ball at any time it is a foul. A lot of players do not understand that. There is an element of what Newbie says but there is also an element of players not knowing the laws properly.

I'm not sure that having never played the game or not being very good at it is a / the reason for a lack of understanding or respect towards players. I think part of the issue from a player to referee angle is in many cases a lack of knowledge of the laws of the game - referees apply the law on the basis of the training and knowledge they have of them and players will disagree on the basis of their not having similar training and knowledge. At this point, potentially, a breakdown in communication occurs between both parties. The player might well disagree with the decision and the manner in which he does this then means the referee has to deal with that too. Obviously, some referees deal with these challenges to them in different ways!

It might be simplistic but, as I posted in a different thread, a lot comes down to both parties speaking as they would like to be spoken too. Given human nature and personalities, players shouldn't be surprised if they get a burst back of similarly forceful language if they've initiated it with a referee. I'm not condoning that, and certainly not swearing, as it can obviously make things worse and then the player / referee relationship will disintegrate. Similarly, not all referees enjoy / use banter in their refereeing style as it doesn't suit them personally.

Personally, I tell captains at the toss-up to work with me and the ARs as a team, that whilst i'm happy to talk to them (as close as we are in that position) i'm not going to be very happy if they or their players sound off at me or the ARs from distance, they know who the potential drama merchants are in their team and I expect to see them as captains get involved to manage / stop these players before I need to. Lastly I tell them I don't expect them to be the drama merchants! That seems to work for me and I do talk (or waffle) a lot in my games and I accept that this approach suits me but not others, and equally that the approach of other refs might not suit me.

I call it C&A's the best Refs are COOL,CALM,COLLECTED,and treat Players with Respect, likewise Players Respect them. The worst Refs are Arrogant,Abusive in manner, and often get Angry they do not warrrant respect in my opinion, likewise Players who are similar in nature, deserve no respect.Be very interesting to find out if what I call poor Refs, have a higher booking ratio per game, than the many quality Refs that we have within the C.C.L. Family, yes I know that Refs are like players, they cannot perform to 100% every game. But I am personally pleased, when I go to a game Refereed by Messr's Achenui,Banderas,Felton,Wells,Singh,Mays,Ryan,Sotirmirin,Oaks.they are all of the C's above, and should be given more games,if available.

Just like to add that the officials at Chessy v Wood on Tuesday were very good.

Messrs Connor, Ford and Nanson take a bow.

Generally speaking, the officials have been better this season at the games I have attended.

It's an interesting point about the cards per game ratio however, if you weren't already, you should be aware that there are a number of instances where cautions are mandatory and not open to the referee's opinion. An example of a mandatory caution is a player removing his / her shirt in celebration of a goal being scored whereas a referee may exercise his opinion as to whether a foul was careless, reckless or made with excessive force and give a freekick, (and) yellow card or red card respectively.

Any ratios derived, and any contrast between them, need to factor in the differences in these types of caution. I'm not sure though what value such a comparison would achieve or prove as you're infering that 'good' refs issue less cards because they have the respect of the players and 'bad' refs issue more cards because they don't have the respect of the players. Is that the case?

No not what I am inferring at all,but just take a look at October's Refs appointments in the C.C.L.many of the names I have mentioned, have been given games, reason they are some of the best we have. They should be rewarded for good performances, quite rightly. If they were players they would be in my team every week, where as if a Player under performs he is dropped, quite rightly. Why should under performing Refs,be rewarded with regular games?Great example last night where Santos the Arsenal left back was already on a yellow, when he deliberately handled the ball,a 2 nd yellow No,was the Ref right or wrong, technically wrong in my book, but in the context of where the offence happened,he was right not to issue one.Take Hanworths celebrations after they scored against Slough,9 men in a heap,is that not a mandatory Yellow, but in the context of the game it is not,in my opinion.Decent Refs you hardly notice,Poor ones everyone does by their mannerisms, shouting at Players to come to them, thrusting cards in their faces, they do themselves no favours at all.
