sat at the eversley v bedfont sports the ref was losing the game a little turned to one of our players after the player had questioned a descision an said " i used to do boxing you know" with a snarling attitude !

at our last game at home the referee called a spectator a twat also

sounds as if the refs have had enough and are fighting back

Many moons ago when I used to play there was a great thing called respect between players and refs.... Many times there were heated exchanges and "Boxing stories " but we as players and the refs knew there was a line that you did not step over. Unfortunately that line is regularly crossed by players as they see it every week on TV . refs are only human, make mistakes and I for one like a ref with a bit of banter in him. Christ, I think that touching a ref is not on full stop.. But what are we to do about it when we see a crowd of players on TV pushing, shoving and surrounding officials almost in every match. The FA has to take some blame..... Lets get them to sort it out higher up and I am sure the good behavior will filter down into non-league.

Agreed Weebs. Contesting Rooneys ban is a bad example to set so we should accept it was a 3 match ban.

Part of the reason I gave it up was because it just wasnt that anymore.

If grown men are influenced by what they see on tv they really need to grow up. You don't usually get this sort of behaviour towards refs in under 18s games and they're far more likely to be influenced by what they see around them.

I think it's great when a ref or lino answers back to either the players or spectators. It's probably something that's frowned upon in official circles but it doesn't bother me.

Agree and disagree... See under 18s diving and swearing at the ref and contesting a lot of decisions because that is what they see their idols doing. And totally agree ... A lot of players need to grow up......

Speaking personally, I think banter is a very powerful tool in the referee's match control arsenal! Far better to read the temperature of the game and react accordingly, than to try and adopt the same approach all the time. Ever seen a referee be too 'nice' and lose control? Ever seen a referee be overly officious from the start and wind up the players, and also lose control? It can happen. Adaptability is important.

Right approach at the right time. Sometimes a quiet word, sometimes a shout from thirty yards away can put a goalkeeper back in his box (!)

i like a ref who has a bit of banter an is approachable an will talk to the skipper an involve me! what i dont like is when they want to be man of the match and an arrogant attitude towards players an simply wont even talk about a descion ! its for the 22 players to have a blinder not the man in black

I agree that referees should work with the team captains and, importantly, vice versa but this does need to be tempered by being done so in the right way. If a player(s) or the skipper sounds off at the referee from distance, in a loud and aggressive manner, that is not likely to be well-received by the referee. It's a cliche but speak as you would like to be spoken to. Also this does not mean that the skipper should be asking for an explanation of every decision too.

I think a lot of it comes down to an individual referee's personality and style of refereeing - some enjoy banter (but not beyond the point at which it verges on dissent and erosion of their match control) and incorporate that in their officiating whilst others are less inclined to follow that approach as it doesn't suit them (or they're not quick-witted enough to come back with a good response).

I'm sure you've experienced enough referees in your games to recognise this and you know which ones are which!

i do make a point of asking a referee what his name is if he hasnt introduced himself to me i then say that he will know if the skipper is approaching as ill be the only player other than the opposing skipper (if he asked) to know his name !! i do find more refs appeal to me calling them by first name an are more responsive in talking to me,, that said not at every decscision gluck im not that busy, an now i have realised there not going to change there minds which only really happenened when i hit 30 lol im now 33, i dont question every time a ref blows his whistle!

kroons im definetley being more clever at my age ;)

Nope. Just for NLN and obvioulsy you to make yet another insult about me !!

Certainly wasn't a personal dig at you, Kroons ! Just referring to various posters comments on this Forum about officials fitness !.

Incidently - If people Google/Jeeves the match details relating to this thread, there are now loads of comments on various sites.

This subject could go on and on and on !

Good swift decision by the club. They didn't even take him home on the club bus. Just left some money for him at the police station and told him he is not welcome at their club again.

Bloke is a moron so should be banned for life. As for the difference between hitting a player and hitting the ref, I would say that one is your opponent and one is neutral so there is a huge difference there.
