Yet ANOTHER howardly thug who deserves all he gets, whats happening to our society nowadays ! The referee does this job as a HOBBY so what right has this player got to just hit the referee ? I hope he gets banged up and yet, every week I hear about refs are this and were that.........listen everyone, whilst I appreciate the frustrations players and management have, I know cos I've been there, but please give a thought about incidents like this and last seasons Guildford events and think, would I want to be a ref ?

Are we actually surprised and wondering why there are less, and less referee's nowadays ? I keep repeating, without a referee there is no game !

No I don't belong to the referee's society !

unfortunately this sort of thing has always happened and probably always will its got nothing to do with todays society just a fact of human nature,i'm not saying its right but nobody has ever come up with a solution to stop it apart from banning the individual for life but worringly there is always another nutter just around the corner.

Why is it assult if you hit a ref but if you hit a player which probably happens all the time it's just a red and 3 match ban ..?

Violent Conduct by a player can of course be an assault and result in the police being involved. Referees are not special here!

I can't give specifics, but I had a player-on-player assault in a pre-season friendly which ultimately resulted in police action, as well as by the FA.

Brunty, its upto the individual player that has been assaulted should he want to take further action and involve the police as ABN or GRH case. Under both circumstances mentioned above, the referee deemed to be assulted and notified the police and quite rightly too.

How many broken legs do we hear about yet hardly none are deemed as an assult or done on purpose, but the individual who has had his leg broken can take legal action as the well documented recent case involving the Sandhurst defender who fortunately had insurance cover.

As stated above the player should ask for the police to be called.

It will be very interesting to hear the final outcome of this specific incident.

That may just be the Club trying to stall an investigation, Pagey.

I see Hanworth might be in trouble as well !

I thought we'd sorted most of these problems in football ?

I think that Brunty's point is being missed; If a player assault's a referee, police action or not he gets a lifetime ban! If player assault's another player, police action or not it normally only warrants a three game ban!!!

Why is this?

Fair point Ace and probably misread Brunty's question.

And as a matter of fact I agree :)

Sorry Ace, I too misread Brunty's comments. I assume that because the FA Rules state that an assault on an official the player is more than likely to receive a life ban, but no rule is set the same as if a player his another opposing player. This could be one for VP or Green Fingers to find out for us !

"Player-on-Player" assualts are every bit as serious as an assualt on a match official.

You can download The FA Discipline Handbook for the current season from the Middlesex FA website:

http://www.middlesex...nce/Discipline/

Page 52 covers assualts, the punishments for which start at a minimum of 140 days (or 20 weeks), even in adult football where suspensions are usually done in matches. This is, admittedly, less than for assualts on referees, which start at 182 days, but if an assualt on a player is significant, the player committing the assualt can be banned sine die from all football with no review for five years.

Edit (for clarity): Whether a player-on-player incident is classed as an assualt or not is down to the referee in the first instance in most cases. An elbow or "raised hand" is violent conduct, which would be a three match ban, an "assualt" would be something more serious, which might or might not be a punch.

Either way, it doesn't automatically follow that if a player laid out another player they would only get a three match ban.

I notice you didn't make any comment after posting the clip, Kroons. At least that referee COULD run !!

Is there any link to the actual incident this thread refers too ?
