Rant - Top 100 Black Britons

Recommended Posts

I see they have just done a Top 100 Black Britons, now my views on such a thing to come but the thing that has annoyed me was that in the recent Top 100 Great Britons recently there was not a black person in it, this has upset a few people saying that there should of been black people in it, well frankly after seeing the list how can anyone justify it.

The list is really clutching at straws, I mean Stephen Lawrence is in there, does he really deserve to be one of the Top 100 Great Britions?

Apart from maybe the boxers and atheletics people who may have a slight claim nobody deserves to replace any of the other Great Britions, black, white or asian!

In Football, you have Ian Wright and John Barnes - well in a list of the Top 100 Great British footballers where would they appear - Nowhere! Think of the 1966 WC team, recent people like Beckham and Shearer, do we just lob these people in because they are black?

Music - Mica Paris, Gabrielle, Des'ree, Errol Brown and Goldie should these people really overtake Lennon/McCartney and co because they are black?

There are plenty of great Black people in this world, I doubt wether anyone would deny that Pele is the best footballer and Ali the best boxer, while people like Luther King and Mandela would get into the Top 100 best people ever polls. It's just unfourtnate that none of these are British.

The only way to stop discrimination is to:

a) Stop judging people on skin colour

B) Stop rewarding people on the colour of their skin!

Thornsy - thank God you're okay. I've been a bit worried, to tell you the truth.

As for this black thing. I agree.

There's a new magazine out in the shops called "Black And Proud" or something equally as banal. For heaven's sake, if there was a magazine called "White And Proud" there would be civil disorder.

MOBO Awards. 100 Greatest Black Britons. The list goes on.

Blacks will never achieve the equality they want while they continue to single themselves out as a minority, and while they continue to go on about how great Black people are.

Another rant over.

I'd agree with you there. But the thing is, most of the time these sort of programmes are not even the conception of black people. If you think how the television industry tends to be dominated (i'm assuming here, EFMTFTV will be an authority on this!) primarily by white people, they probably HAVE to do this sort of programme in order to appear to be an equal opportunities company. And because of this they get lazy and instead of doing some actual research into the figure heads of black communities, they think of every semi-famous black person they can and chuck them on the list.

So I don't blame the black community entirely, I blame the sympathetic white people who feel they have to continually make a public display of their 'acceptance' of ethnic minorities in Britain.
