Good result from Banstead last night considering the mauling that they took at the weekend. One interesting topic of discussion after the game concerned the taking of a goal kick. The referee allowed the kick to be taken without the ball being stationary. This resulted in some raised eyebrows to say the least. I have checked the laws of the game and can see nothing to suggest that the referee was wrong. Sure, the laws state that the ball must be stationary for the taking of free kicks but that is all it does say. Can anyone shed some light?

You have a good point.

I have just quickly gone through the Laws Of Association Football (LOAF) and can see nothing that says the ball must be stationary for goal kicks or corner kicks.

It does say that it must be stationary for kick offs and free kicks

Most of us do insist though that the ball is stationary for all re-starts

Sure one of the other officials will correct me if I am wrong about what the LOAF says

I see the error of my ways. I was, rather obscurely I hasten to add, referring to the discussion I had after the Chessington v Windsor game on Tuesday night. And if Banstead won on Monday night then that shows I am fallible after all. What do I know?

I know that there have been a gazillion changes and tweaks since I passed my referree exam back in the 1800s but I think that this shows just how little people know. This has given me a nice little idea for the rest of the season with regards to the WFC programmes. The more that people who attend / partake in games get to know what the laws actually state can only be seen as a positive. It might even improve the whole "respect" culture and campaign - and that can not be a bad thing.
