dorking fc, the shocking reality.

Recommended Posts

Events at Dorking FC, Surreys oldest Football Club , have hit a new level.

After reading all the Guernsey stuff and smudgey comments, alongwith some player banter which wouldnt have cut it at an under 7s girls tournament for the witless, I have felt compelled to post again about the goings on at sunny Meadowbank.

My most avid readers will recall after a game or two this season I said the side would face another long struggle, competing for most of the game but finding it very hard to pick up points. I stand by that initial assesment but have to praise the management for improving the squad so quickly, not just in the introduction of a few players, but for the way they have gone about coaching and encouraging the team so that they can pick up the sort of results they have been getting.

Last night I watched the u18 side again.

The had played at Horley on Monday ( a 10-2 victory) but still went out at a sprint from the kick off and dominated a very entertaining and skillful game.

I am impressed with the unity, the consistency through the club.

The management team on the bench always look the part, seek to encourage, the prematch and post match routines look impressive at this level, and the players look like they are responding both on and off the pitch.

There finally does seem to be a strong connection between the Brockham Badgers set up and Dorking Fc and Im confident some of these lads will become first team regulars or better.

I hope , I really hope that this is the start of a renaissance at DFC, that this set up is allowed to continue, and that gradually the support of the town will fall back behind the Chicks, in terms of attendances, sponsorship and general opnion.

In regards to the much maligned officials on here , last night we had excellent officials, two younger guys and an "experienced" assistant who is a welcome and regular visitor to the Chicks. Only noticed the ref once when he was sprinting backwards pretty efficiently.

I thanked them in the bar afterwards, after all without them I wouldnt have had a game to watch, and learned that the ref was officiating league games ( div 1 I think) this season.

There was even a tele in the bar with sport on. I have two pieces of advice for anyone nearby, 1) come and watch these sides, especially the u18s , its FREE!

2) dont touch the asahi until BJR has necked a couple.

THANKS JEFF.

It is so nice to see positive comments for a change. Let me just say that in this present economic climate, (and it ain't going to get any better in the near future), it's very hard to keep morale high and a good sense of camaraderie up !.

I haven't seen such a happy management and coaching squad at Meadowbank for some very long time. In addition we have 'inherited' Brandon as Bar Manager. Not just a bar manager, but an all round good egg. He arrived at the ground a few days ago to generally clean up the club-house, and noticing the pitch conditions were ideal for a heavy roller at last, took it upon himself to go over the ground.

I know it sounds like I am 'trumpet-blowing', but I'm not.

One thing TSF missed was our reasonably formed Dorking Ladies. After the re-organisation at Horley, it became obvious they needed to find a new home. I had talks with our Secreetary, and it was agreed they could come to Dorking, Not only did they do so, they were happy to wear the DFC strip and call themse4lves DORKING Ladies. They also helped Brandon paint the interior of the club house. Believe you me, Sunday afternoon drinkies in the bar after a Ladies match is just as much, if not more so, entertaining than after the men on a Saturday.

There is fantastic co-operation between our 'Under-18's' and the 1st Team Squad. Quite a few of our 'Under-18's' are registered with the 1st, and have indeed had a run out with them from time to time.

It isn't going to be easy for any clubs in the present day, but a happy club DOES seems to help.

you're welcome buckers, any ideas how to stop our manager getting sent off?!

and Bjr, re the barman

AT the u18s game I got there before kick off for a prematch libation, and a scruffy looking herbert with shorts and a vest was serving.

Being of an older generation, that doesnt go down well. However when you realise he had been grafting in the heat, that it was a little early you can perhaps forgive. What I was delighted to see, and its a small point but indicative of changes at the club, that next time I trotted up he was in a Dorking tracksuit and that looked fine.

Whether he changed or he was asked to change I dont know and doesnt matter, the fact it happened is the important part.

A small thing yes, but lots of these small things add up.

Friendly at DFC tomorrow night instead of training. though I don't think the bar will be open. I'm waiting for Buckers to ring me to confirm.

It's not behind closed doors. Open to all and free. It was only being arranged yesterday, so I'm still waiting on all details.

Unfortunately, our bar manager is away mid-week.

............ and YES - I have been presented with a green DFC anorak top.
