Maybe I should give up?

Along those lines yes. Personally, at half-time and full-time I ask my ARs if I missed anything from them, is /was there anything I did that wasn't clear to them, is / was there anything I need to be aware (for the remainder of the game). Very often, if officials are travelling together they will discuss the game and any incidents during in it and how they dealt with it.

The half-time chat is useful too because the referee may well have missed something or simply needs to be aware of potential issues. For instance, last night at half-time I mentioned to the referee that home 5 and away 6 had exchanged full and frank opinions of each other in front of me but behind his back (he was following play) and, potentially, that might escalate in the 2nd half.

Often too the benches will ask the AR that side why a decision was made and he can relay the answer afterwards having spoken to the ref at halftime.

Other sources to use in self-assessment are the DVDs from games - Premier League Academy games are recorded and most clubs will provide a copy if asked. These can be viewed in respect of a referee's general and specific positioning, signalling technique, movement and workrate, etc.

Mewey,no one in the ground shouted louder than me,when it happened.Defend your own comes to mind, which I must say does not suprise me.As everyone knows REFS ARE NEVER WRONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And this dear smudgey is where you let yourself down. As i stated before the ref was in the wrong and I cannot disagree cos you were there. My point is if it were so obvious to you off the pitch why did one of the other 21 players on the pitch not kick the ball off as they are fully entitled too ? Simple question me thinks that you avoided answering cos you know i am right :)

Whilst you as a fan may have shouted very loudly, you should know that a referee is not likely to take notice of what spectators shout as, frankly, a lot of it is ill-informed to say the least.

This is not a case of 'defending our own' but more a case of explaining and making aware to those outside of the refereeing fraternity of the application of the laws of the game and decision-making in respect of that.

In terms of assessment and self-assessment, here is an example of a comment on this subject from an assessment I once received;

'You were alert to player injuries, particularly head injuries.  As we discussed post match, although you considered that the home player was “milking” the injury after 73 minutes the first consideration must be the player’s welfare and it is better to stop the match immediately.'

I stand by my decision at the time not to stop play as I was close enough to see the home player look at me to see where I was then go down as play had continued upfield towards his goal, and I considered him to be feigning injury in a means to stop the opposition going forward. In retrospect, and after considering the verbal debrief and written assessment from the assessor, I would manage the situation differently now. So that's assessment and self-assessment in a nutshell!

This is the same referee that you described as 'excellent' after his performance on Westfield v Guernsey last Tuesday Smudge.

Quite a lot of people have already cottoned onto the fact that Smudge talks complete and utter b*******s and tells lies with feckin great bells on !

Soon everyone else will think the same way.

I wasn't at either game so cannot comment on this particular referee, but surely a ref can be good one game and poor the next?

I'm sure even Jeff Winter had a good game once, law of averages and all that.

Now im not saying for 1 min that the lad that went down was not injured and i hope if he has fractured his jaw he makes a quick recovery, but from what I see it did not look like a head injury and he carried on and played the game, and was also in the clubhouse at the end of the game.. The ref did not have a good game but he can not be blamed for this incident in my opinion.

Anthony, have you never heard of concussion,it enables people to do things, that they have no recollection of.Just hope and pray he never takes the same stance in any future games the Ref that is.

Mewey you will go far as a Ref,and an orator, luckily yes it never turned out as a serious injury, but who is to say that if this Plank of a Ref,does similar again, someone may not even die.I am sure you would find others to blame, like rule 34. Section g para 67.WE ARE all HUMAN AFTER ALL.go with the status quo, everything in the garden is rosey. My take is it is better to be safe, than sorry after the event.

What's with all the animosity and ill tempered posts towards one another it's getting ridiculous and if I'm honest makes boring reading for us supposed GOLD MEMBERS. Everybody is entitled to his or her opinion without being slated or ridiculed for it. Can I make a suggestion if I may without getting abused?!?

Exactly. Everyone is entitled to an opinion but to call a referee a 'disgrace' and saying he should never referee again is baffling after saying the same referee was 'excellent' the week before. Of course a referee can have a good game one week and a bad one the next.

Also how did the referee cost the club over £200 in fines Smudge? Is it over £25 a caution nowadays? Because you said yourself the sending off was justified?
