Double Standards

What exactly are all these totally inept stewards doing all game? The foul and abusive language from the Hornchurch fans in the second half couldn't have been more blatent. Yet despite stewards standing only feet away, nothing was said, not even a 'calm down lads', just turning a blind eye.

I pointed out to the safety officer that people were standing on the area in front of the bar, which is clearly marked as a no standing area, yet he did absolutely nothing, other than laughing. I've seen home fans ushered off this area many times this season, but apparently rules don't apply to away fans.

I take nothing away from the Hornchurch boys, they're a top bunch of lads and bring about exactly the kind of atmosphere we try and create week in week out. The simple fact of the matter is this, if we were to behave in the same way they did tonight, the stewards would have been all over us, threatening ejection and bans, officials from the club would be branding us a disgrace (as has happened this season) and countless letters would have been sent in from Mr Anonymous insisting we are silenced immediately.

So what are we to do, tonight we just kept quiet, said nothing, but is that really how its got to be, we are all passionate football fans and mad about our football club, but there is only so long we can put up with these ridiculous double standards.

Interesting that the safety officer was overheard at the final whistle answering a complaint from a fan about all the Hornchurch swearing. The response from said safety officer was "that's part of football".

Interesting that swearing of any sort from HOME fans is dealt with differently. Why do HOME supporters who follow the club home and away, get told to quieten down? It is exactly this that makes us question our support.

quite frankly our "stewards" bottle it unless of course they are young and I've seen that happen in the only 2 home games i've been to this season. I think these "stewards" are there for one reason and one reason only and that is to keep us quiet. Obviously I know that isn't the case, but that is the only job they seem to be doing.

Can't comment on the specifics-and similar to the team-i'm sure there is always room for a 'better performance'.

Do we need to remeber though-without the volunteeer stewards-the club would not be able to stage the game-so i'll always be grateful to them

But last night would have been exactly the same if we had no stewards, because the stewards we do have don't do anything unless it's towards a particular group of people then that is when they are quick to react

there is a big sign up thats says "this is a family club so please moderate your language" i too heard the quote " swearing is part of football mate" if you volunteer for the post then you should do your job properly and confront the offender or offenders not slide off and ignore it. if somebody complains then it should be acted upon and not brushed off flipantly with a remark that angers paying customers.

I am the person who was told when i complained about the swearing that it is part of football. I hadn't looked at the forum today as I was so totaly pd off by that reply I was prepared not to bother with Margate Football Club. It is bad enough when watching the football at times especially when the players are not competeing for the ball. If you donot challenge for a header you will never win it and the amount of high balls we are playing it is craz not to compete. Still my son inlaw who was with me last night phond and said have you seen the forum I said no I am not botherd with Margate any more. He then informed me someone has been on regarding 'Double Standards' which was going to be my headlines as I said travelling home in the car. I thought when I got in wait and do it tomorrow when I have calmed down then this morning I thought why bother at all just leave Margate FC alone. My son in law and all his fiends who used to go and watch Margate every week say why do you bother to go week in week out. I said I have been a Brentford supporter since 1959 and always went to all their home games untill I moved down here and they have only once in my life time been out of the old 3rd and 4th division so what is the difference. I am just a supporter of a local football club come what may. Though at the moment I do wonder at our defence, 3 of the back 4 we had last year and we were in trouble then. In my view Ball and Hill are really not fullbacks and are beaten time and time again with the ball comming in fromt he wings along the bye line for goals scored Saturday and last night. Still I have had my moan and will now read the rest of the forum and now probably turn up for Saturdays FAC 2nd round qualifier.

Why don't you phone the club and make your feelings known. Cliff is always very accommodating and I am sure they will take your complaint seriously.

The real issue I think is trying to get the balance right on swearing. As a rule i personally think so long as you don't use the C word (Cute is allowed) and moderate the F word to perhaps Fecking, the rest of the swearing maybe what you'd expect at a football match. Also strangley enough i think W***er, is also very strong as it appears as a DIRECT insult to someone. Thus the nest problem i think any perceived bad language directed at an official (although warranted) does not bode well.

Heres my view from someone who like a good cuss!!!!

We have had some complaints about our language this season but it's usually at home and seems to be worse from our younger fans,we have taken steps to move our hardcore support where the most swearing seems to come from further away from the majority of fans and the directors box. Some of our songs do have swearing in them but as the above poster says,as long as it isn't the c word then I don't see too much problem. For me Wan£er isn't that bad,I have seen grown women joining in when the referee has a stinker and they tell him with the usual song.Incidentally I have no clue whether my language was bad on Tuesday, probably was with the songs but not so sure I was giving much abuse

You were hugely entertaining, Rob, and the support from the Hornchurch fans was exactly what non-league football is about. I don't have an issue with it; what I do have an issue with is that it is clearly one rule for one, one rule for another. Certain home fans would never have got away with some of the songs being sung.

It wasn't the swearing so much just that that particular steward was standing near them and was not bothered to even have a word. He just seems in my opinion just to walk around the ground and to avoid confrontation. With the gates as low as they are we could do with these extra individuals to pay an entrance fee if not prepared to their job correctly. Say again Double Standards.
