Daventry (h) game

Cookham - good question about the bench - where was Marsarla, Coyle, Bateman? Earles has beeen at most games but cant even make it to the bench.

Its good to have a large squad, but unless players get games they will be off before they ever get a chance of playing.

The problem is that Bateman is sticking to a winning team where we are only just winning some games and that is down to having a strong core of 8-9 players who are carrying others.

Bateman needs to open his mind and drop those favouites who hold the team back and bring in others from the squad who can then show if they have the ability to claim a first team place.

Giving Mpi 5 mins a game will have him gone before christmas - he is a local lad and they are the ones we will need in the team when we move into the new ground to show we are a true Slough team and prove why it is so important to have the club back in the town.

Great result from a pretty dour game. Coyne was superb and deservedly got the winner from excellent work from Swifty.

Sonner for Abbey is not a like for like substitution. Sonner is the physical presence up front, he wins more than his fear share of headers and puts himself about. Abbey is a good player but he tends to play on the shoulder of the last defender and trying to get away with a burst of pace. I think he is more similar to Burnell than Sonner. I was surprised by the change as I think you lose the physical presence without Sonner upfront but ultimately it doesn't matter as we got the winner.

I agree Staines but whilst we are picking up points and scoring goals it is difficult, I would love to see Mpi and Abbey given more of an opportunity but that's the problem with not having a reserve team... Problem is, as fans we all have different opinions which makes for healthy debate on here but Bateman can't win as some of us will agree others won't, if Mpi and Burnell started a few games some of us would say why aren't Sonner and Abbey getting more of a chance for example... The test will come when we have a dodgy patch and that will happen, it happens to all teams, whilst we are in good form none of the squad will want to leave but it's when they others not performing that the problem occurs... I'm sure Bateman has explained to the current benchwarmers the situation and if you ask me, judging by the reaction at Coyne's winner, they are all united!!! I understand your point about Swift and he did lose possession for their goal but the real question is where was the back up, Daventry ran 50 yards unchallenged but in the end we won and Swift got the assist for the winner... With success comes questions and maybe we, myself included, need to realise that these players are going to make mistakes and go through bad spells of form, they are only human and it's up to their team mates and us to get behind them and push them through...

Bring on Boreham Wood!!!

looking at twitter Charlie seems to be getting a bit agitated at being on the bench and playing little time but thats only natural. I just wanna say the likes of Mpi, Brown, Abbey and Eales stick with it your chance will come and us fans value you being at the club.

its difficult as you don't want to risk losing those players but when we are going well its hard to drop many players. there have been poor performances which have resulted in no changes still though for the next game

I have a slight worry in that for example if Sonner or Burnell got injured we don't really know which partnerships work concerning Abbey or Mpi as other than Sonner with Burnell we haven't had much playing time with other combinations

2 things:-

1 Slough have scored 24 goal and the front 2 have got 14 of them

2 Charlie has came on 11 time an average of 13.64 minutes per game, ( 2 of which were more than 20 min and 1 for 42 min ) and has still not scored YET. (please note I have said yet he WILL score soon) But he does look good when he come on.

I don't know what some fans expect. It sounds like people think we should be experimenting with team formations and which front two work well. At the end of the day you win the games you have to win and worry about formations when it's necessary. At the moment having Sean and Danny up front for the majority of games is getting us 3 points and that's what matters.

If players leave before the end of September because they aren't getting games then they aren't really team players, are they? Ben, Charlie and others will get their opportunity throughout the course of the season.

Why does it have to be about two forwards up front? Steve Bateman is just so predictable with his substitions and always airs on the side of caution.Sometimes I think we're playing for a draw at home!

We never looked like scoring from open play against Daventry but that's not to say that individually either Danny Burnell or Sean Sonner were playing bad, I just didn't think they threatened the goal enough. We just don't go for the jugular at times, when we should.

Byrne and Abbey were the usual like for like substitions.Where's the inspired management in that?

I thought we should have put Charlie Mpi on,at the start of the 2nd half and took the game to Daventry. I would have bought Adam Logie on to bolster the midfield, too. That's no reflection on Paul Coyne, who I thought had his best game in a Slough shirt on Saturday. Just a way of organising a 4-3-3.

Still,we got a lucky penalty and a well-worked winner late in the game, when Sean Sonner had left the field. So it felt good to go home with a rather fortunate win.

Let's hope we don't lose any players from our squad,as it is having the competition for places that is bringing out the best from the players because they know they've others wanting their position in the team. This is one aspect that has been a long time coming. It will be a huge blow if players depart now.

Let's hope for another FA Cup upset.........by turning over 'the Wood'.
