Guildford city fc the search goes on

Recommended Posts

City Fan, my suggesetion would be to stay put at the amazing Spectrum, 'cos lets admit it Guildford are almost always guaranteed 3 points 'cos no players like going and playing there........... and that goes for supporters and ground-hoppers ! Now that's what I call ''Home Advantage''....LOL !

The whole Slyfield situation has been a bit of a rollercoaster. We got involved a couple of years ago when the regeneration project was formally announced, although as many of you know that area of Guildford has long been earmarked for development. It has also been touted as the most appropriate area for a new football ground since at least the 1970s.

To maximise our chances we pulled in the support of a couple of other local sports clubs - boxing and table tennis. Both of those have exceptionally high membership rates but no permanent home to call their own. All we were asking was for the planners to consider leasing us a plot of land to build a multi-use facility with a football pitch attached to it.

There wasn't due to be any funding from the council (come on, we're used to that by now), although we did suggest that part of the development could be paid for under the need to provide community facilities. These have to be built by law, so it'll be interesting to see what they decide on. A skate park probably.

In the end all we got was some very public flack (and some personal abuse) from a NIMBY who doesn't even live in the Slyfield residential area. The council indulged us at a single meeting, where they were surprisingly positive about our chances of being included, but then all went quiet. A familiar story regarding GBC's attitude towards the club, so I'm told. Mind you, the council have made the right noises about helping us in future, but I'll believe that when it happens.

So that's where we are now - there's no option to build on Slyfield so we have to look elsewhere. We've suggested a couple of plots that have been offered to us but, like Jakesfanclub says, we are always told that it's green belt and therefore not feasible. However when someone wants to build an industrial estate on an adjacent plot - that's fine!

We're realistic enough to know that something like this isn't just going to fall into our laps (although we do cast jealous eyes up the road to the Woking area!). I suppose the council wants to know what's in it for them, and money talks. Anyone know any multi-billionaires looking to buy a Step 5 club from the Guildford area?

And finally, Misunderstood - your comments are disrespectful of our intentions. Perhaps you should go and talk to some of your Club's older supporters about the special relationship that used to exist between the supporters of our two clubs in those long ago days.

After supporting Romford for over fifty years I think I can safely say I am one of our older supporters, and there certainly wasn't any special relationship between the two clubs in those far distant days, and why should there have been.

I also fail to see how my post could be considered disrespectful, and perhaps you could explain why you think it was.

Disrespectful to the people running Guildford City FC in that you think they might do "A Rushden & Diamonds". When the time is right the club will be set up as a Supporters Trust, just like AFC Wimbledon, to prevent that sort of thing happening.

I wouldn't call it being disrespectful, more like being helpful. The previous owner of Rushden & Diamonds gave the club, lock stock and barrel to the clubs supporters trust.
