Guildford city fc the search goes on

Recommended Posts

some of you on here might of read on the club website or by now in the local press , guildford borough council will not be including guildford city fc's plans for a new ground in the slyfield regeneration project due to the need for more housing ,but have pledged to help find a more suitable location for a new ground ! i just wonder will it be in the same ilk as westfields and knaphills ,as many of you have commented in the past on your visits to the spectrum athlectics arena its a pretty god damn awful place to watch a football match (windsor fc have that pleasure to come) i love to hear your comments and opinions or advice on the clubs current situation ,as my user name suggests iam only a mere fan not a club offical

guildford city fc had a ground, why should the council stump up for another?

Woking council must be unique in the way they treat football clubs.

That's right TSF, they should change their name back to AFC Guildford before expecting any help ;)

ANY chance of a brief rundown, on whats gone on. seems strange the 1st 2 posters seem against any help.

Guildford Borough Council only have one club to think about too. Woking BC have Knaphill, Westfield AND Sheerwater :)

I'm not against any help for any team TF - just pointing out that the current Guildford City team is really AFC Guildford re-badged.

The history page on Guildfords website may give you a better understanding.

I've played there a few times, it's a very weird place to play. Is the running track used at all? If not you should develop on that.

It still feels very much like your playing on an athletics field, and i think the team, which are a good footballing side deserve better.

Guildford City are not actually asking the Council to build a ground for them. All we are asking for is some help to find us a plot of land to buy where we can build something for ourselves. If we had been given a plot at Slyfield it certainly wouldn't have come to us for free.

One local landowner has actually offered us a site but the Council are not interested, saying the site is green belt, despite the fact that it is next door to an industrial park.

TSF - just because somebody screwed the Club 40 years ago it shouldn't stop people trying to give it another go.

Greenfingers - I really don't see what the name of the club has to do with it.

And finally, Misunderstood - your comments are disrespectful of our intentions. Perhaps you should go and talk to some of your Club's older supporters about the special relationship that used to exist between the supporters of our two clubs in those long ago days.

A council help a football club. Do me a favour. Too busy seeing what they can get out for themselves. WBC appear to be the exception to that rule.

Good Luck to Guildford FC but please guys dont hold your breath !!!!

no problem with the current people giving Guildford football another go, but how on earth can they expect to buy and develop a football ground in Guildford? Even if they find somewhere wheres the money ?

A bit like Bookham hoping to buy somewhere local, its a little expensive round here!,

Perhaps Guildford could groundshare with Dorking, that has Ryman grading I think.

Bookham could go to the spectrum, its a similar distance, and ground share with mole valley scr.

not many fans are going to be put out watching...

Interesting subject, only found out last week that The Arena in Croydon,is no longer owned by Croydon Council. There are 3 sides playing there now,Croydon F.C.,Welling Reserves, and a Sunday side who play in the 2nd Division of the Croydon Municipal League,Croydon J.F.C.Will be interesting to see how the excellent playing surface holds up,to the extra use.

After supporting Romford for over fifty years I think I can safely say I am one of our older supporters, and there certainly wasn't any special relationship between the two clubs in those far distant days, and why should there have been.

I also fail to see how my post could be considered disrespectful, and perhaps you could explain why you think it was.

I was at Guildford 2005/2006 season and they were trying to get somewhere new to play then. They were happy to pay for it then as I am sure they are happy to do now, but unfortunately they got little to no help and hit brick wall after brick wall. On and off I was there until 2007/2008 when Scott Steele was running it and I believe the lack of future prospect was part of the reason why he decided to call it a day. Whilst I don't think that they have any right to expect anything done for them, a little support from the local council would be good as I think they have the potential to move up the leagues and be something Guildfor BC can be proud of.

Both Westfield and Knaphill have been very lucky with their facilities as they have both been completed as part of large housing development projects in the respective areas. Westfield have been trying to get their new facilities for at least 10 years, possibly a little longer, and the people at the club have worked extremely hard to get what we have. You have to hand it to the council who have allowed the changes to be made even though I am sure they will have had quite a bit of opposition from the local residents (we have certainly experienced that at Westfield), and now WBC have 2 very nice sporting facilities to boast about in their area to add to that of their main side Woking FC. I may be too close to the situation to not be biased, but I can't see where the drawback is with it all, especially if it isn't going to cost Guildford BC a huge amount of money!?

Any development now, that benefits Football Clubs has to be tied in with Business or Housing in one way or another.Hence the reluctance of any project that does not make anyone a profit, being given short shift. Then of course we have the Nimby's,who oppose any plans, for an improvement that benefits the wider Community.Westfields development caters for both,as the building houses other Sports, and Community Use,not just the Football Club, which is to be applauded.

Disrespectful to the people running Guildford City FC in that you think they might do "A Rushden & Diamonds". When the time is right the club will be set up as a Supporters Trust, just like AFC Wimbledon, to prevent that sort of thing happening.

Regarding the special relationship, you obviously weren't involved in the annual matches between the Supporters' Clubs that took place at Brooklands Stadium and Joseph's Road for a number of years then until City folded?

I have followed the fortunes of Romford ever since those days and am pleased they are still going. I wish the club the best of luck in eventually finding their own ground. See - we're both in the same boat really.

Personal experiences tell me that DT that even when things proposed would be good for the community as well as the football club with the money coming from private funding adn the council actually getting to make money on the scheme it is silll blocked.

Guildford could merge with Dorking???......... :bolt:

:D

That's already been done in the past Chris, as you well know !

District Councils in Surrey trying to help football clubs ? Don'r make me larf !! According to most of 'em, football is a game for 'oiks'. Now if it was a rugby ground that Guildford City were looking for................... Still, I suppose a lot of senior members of local councils do have odd shaped balls !!

On an even more serious note, remember that Central Government are insisting Home-Counties councils find more and more land for housing, so they can house subsidised immigrants, benefit cheats and the like, and football pitches, especially controlled by local government must seem an easy, (and very lucrative), way out !

(Please note: At no time did I mention M.V.D.C. in my rant above !!)
