massive win for us, goal came in the 82nd minute. Bashley had more chances, but we took the one that counted and we did not look out of place.

Bashley manager took his team on our training pitch afterwards and made them do some doggies.

No didn't play Smudge, seem to have taken on more of a back up role this year, coaching the goalkeepers as well. I played last Tuesday in the Hants cup and will play in the Aldershot Cup on Tuesday.

I didn't do much of a pre-season and our goalie has been on top form this season, so no complaints.

Kob's report, thanks to all the well wishers.

It's difficult to find the words to do justice to what was (apart from the weather) a fantastic day for everyone involved at Hartley Wintney FC. I was going to congratulate everyone for the true 'team effort' in making it a great day, from the football on the pitch, to the food in the clubhouse and the hanging baskets outside... but the kind words of Bash supporters Chris and Steve say it for me, and much better.

I discovered that one of the guys who was sat just behind where I was standing at Alresford, who I chatted with briefly and who I assumed was an Alresford supporter or official, was infact a Bashley official taking notes. After the game yesterday he made a point of coming over to me and I was shaken warmly by the hand and wished the best of luck in the next round. Sorry that I don't have your name, but thank you. It was genuine warm congratulations, a handshake of real friendship from someone who I'm sure knows what it feels like to win against higher league opposition - Bashley have themselves done it often enough. They must have been hugely dissapointed, and perhaps not a little shocked at going out to us, but the Bashley supporters and officials were wonderfully magnanimous in defeat, and their players had a very professional attitude despite obvious frustration during the game, which was played in a very good spirit. It was one of those rare games when the officials were relatively anonymous - always a good sign.

As for the game, what can I say, we were superb. It wasn't just that we matched higher league opposition all over the pitch - and a team not struggling or in turmoil but one that's doing OK mid-way up the Southern Premier league - Bashley are one of those sides that has a great cup tradition and has caused lots of upsets of their own, so they know only too well what can happen in a one-off game and I'm sure weren't taking us lightly.

As at Alresford, we survived an early scare when the Bashley player air-kicked on the edge of the 6-yard box with just Lee to beat, and they had other chances during the game. Unlike at Alresford, we started much much better and the back-four were unbelievably strong. I pass Darryl occasionally and he always looks so fierce I never like to say anything incase he pins me against the wall - heaven knows what he must be like to play against! Chris Paterson got Man of the Match and was superb, but any one of the four could have got the award. When I saw Luke Pearson in at right-back for the suspended Nathan Stamp, I can't pretend I wasn't concerned whether he'd have the pace and skill to play there against their tricky front guys and wing men, but again superb Luke.

To think we had 3 regular first team players out through injury and suspension - two in the centre of midfield which few clubs could handle easily - and we still had the depth in the squad to bring in players who could pull off a performance and a result like that... just incredible at our level and with our resources, and I've got to bow to the pulling power of Nev, Scott and Mick in being able to get these players in to play for us. It's so nice that the players have been rewarded by what must have been one of the most special days for all of them, even for the experienced heads like Willo.

Every single player deserves a 1000 words of praise here, but I'll pick out 3 others before this turns into "War and Peace".

Lee Allen - great handling again, especially on crosses often under great pressure, and some brave gathering of the loose ball at players' feet. Wasn't called on to make the kind of heroic saves he made at Alresford, but another very confident display. I was mildly critical of him last season when mistakes were being made, but Nev kept faith in him and he's proved it was more than justified.

Deano - Dean Peltohaka ran himself into the ground for Hartley yesterday. With our two workaholic midfielders - Keiron and Nick of course - both out injured, the guys in there had to bust a gut and they all did, but none more than Dean.

Dan Brownlie - what a finish, what a time to do it! Super Sub or what! He'd only been on 30 seconds when he slid the ball through to Ryan, I think it was, who was unlucky with his shot. But then to roll the ball passed the keeper from some way out with that precision, to see it finish just inside the far post and then the ripple of the net... I was (unusually) sat in the stand out of the rain, in the middle of the Bash supporters, and ought to apologise for my unrestrained joy! I jumped out of my seat so fast and so high I must have nearly put my head through the roof. Magical moment.

Thanks guys - that's a result that will now forever remain in the club's history as one of our biggest wins, and you guys put it there.

Anyone know when the draw for the next round is?

Bash Report....

Hartley Wintney 1-0 Bashley

FA Cup First Qualifying Round

Saturday 17th September 2011

Bashley crashed out of the FA Cup at the first stage with a humbling defeat at the hands of step 6 opponents in Hartley Wintney, albeit a side unbeaten in all competitions this season. Kudos must be given to the home side, who gave everything they had to make the assignment for Bash as hard as possible, and had the game's outstanding performer in former Reading man Martin Williams who pulled the strings in midfield.

You might have been forgiven for thinking that the world was about to end as the heavens opened before kick off with a huge thunderstorm and a torrential downpour, but the bright start from the visitors gave no indication of what was to come. Within the first minute Mark Gamble had got away on the left and crossed for James Stokoe to touch the ball wide at the near post. Paddy Hester and Jack Smith then combined for Gamble to have a header blocked, while a deflected shot from long range from Andrew Newcombe was well collected by David Elm. Lee Allen in the Hartley Wintney goal kept out a Hester free kick as Bash had the better of the opening stages.

Stokoe then spurned the best chance of the opening half midway through the opening period after Tom Hill and Gamble had combined to set him up eight yards out but he completely missed his kick and the ball trickled off his standing foot through to the keeper. A deflected cross from Luke Whitley then found Hester at the far post but his looping header back across goal dropped just wide. Allen held another effort from Stokoe while a low, skidding free kick from Williams was held by Elm, while both Gamble and Pat Cox shot over as half time approached.

With the second half only fifteen seconds old, the home side forced their first corner of the afternoon but the eventual shot from Williams was blocked. Bash had plenty of possession but were unable to find a way through, and Jack Coventry fired a warning shot when he pulled an effort just wide from the edge of the area. Bash were still in control though, and when Hester took advantage of some rare prevarication from Daryl Bloxham and created space for Gamble's effort which was blocked by the legs of Allen, Hester put the rebound wide with the keeper on the ground.

Newcombe was booked for a foul on Gamble before Bash had huge penalty appeals rejected after Ben Dillon appeared to handle inside the area. Dillon dragged a shot wide with twenty minutes left as the home side gained increased belief from the blank scoreline. Bash appeared somewhat discombobulated and Ryan Stevens hit a shot into the side netting but the visitors went close when sub Liam Green released Gamble and his cross was headed just over his own bar by the towering Bloxham. With eight minutes left came the stunning moment which decided the tie. Williams broke forward and played a ball over the top, and sub
DAN BROWNLIE
got the better of Smith before firing a shot across the exposed Elm and in off the far post.

Bash tried desperately to save themselves, with Hester having a shot deflected wide and Gary Middleton heading wide from Hill's corner. Elm denied Stevens twice on the break, while Bash forced another corner two minutes from time. With Elm forward, Green curled it in and Allen spilled it, but sub Carl Foster hooked a close range effort over the top via a deflection for another corner. When Stokoe had a shot saved in the final minute, it seemed clear that the home side would hang on, and they did to spark jubilant celebrations amongst their players, management and supporters. There was no sense of schadenfreude at Bashley's defeat, more a sense of pure joy that they had pulled off such an unlikely victory and continued their run in the FA Cup for at least another fortnight. For Bash, a trip to Arlesey next Saturday beckons where they will attempt to get their season back on track.
