Banbury game

Whose up for getting the Banbury express to the ground? I'm sure Nigel will hunt out some decent boozers in the town centre.

Against my better judgement I looked at getting the train to Banbury. Even the cheapest tickets were going to cost us £63 return. That's supposed to incentivise us to leave our car at home is it?!

Warren,

I asked this on the Banbury forum and was told that the best place to go which has some good food also is the San Spencer

Probably a marketing ploy but thats where im heading.

This notice has appeared in the thread you started:

Mark, the town centre is barely 5 minutes walk from the station, up the approach road and turn left.

Usual chains to be found. For a bit more individuality go to Parson's Street (through the Market Place) for The Wine Vaults, the last pub in Banbury with anything like old-fashioned snugs, and the Reindeer (Hook Norton ales but behave yourselves).

The only entry in the 2011 Good Beer Guide is The Bell: turn right over the railway bridge, 5 minutes walk.

The main bar in the clubhouse will be closed to spectators so it will be a bit too cosy for comfort in the small bar.

I have just been speaking to a work colleague who lives in Banbury

He has warned that the Bell is not very good, or at least it wasnt 4 years ago. It has since been rebuilt as apparently a drunk man burned it down.

He highly recommends Parsons street and in particular the Vaults.

I'm mystified by these remarks about the Bell. A fire? Nonsense, and a great surprise to the landlady when I rang her a few minutes ago! The pub's been in the GBG for years and deservedly so.

Your colleague must be mistaken...perhaps he's confusing it with the Buck & Bell at the top of Parson's Street, once a fine old town inn, now a trendy bar.
