21-3-1925 CLAPTON v BARKING TOWN ESSEX COUNTY SENIOR CUP SEMI FINAL

At Ilford FC , Newbury Park LOST 10-1 (or 6-1)

Our records say that we lost 10-1 but the programme has 6-1 written on it with the Clapton scorers identified.However the Essex F A records also state 10-1. We were in the Athenian League but Clapton were in the higher rated Isthmian League and were a force to be reckoned with then.Clapton won the cup, beating Leyton 2-0 after a 0-0 draw.

Our team was listed as A.G Shoesmith, J.S.Carman (Captain),R.J.Wade,A.G.Butcher , A.J.Vango, W.Manning, H.Scott, W.McNaughton,R.C.Dellow,F.J.Chapmanand W.Aldous

Our goal was scored by F.J.Chapman, one of 27 he scored that season. Colours worn were not indicated .The game kicked off at 3.15 pm. The fashion of numbering the players in the programme from 1-22 was followed and every position was named eg goal,right back,left back etc.

 

To reach the semi final we beat Leytonstone 1-0,Harwich & Parkestone 7-0 and we also reached the final of the West Ham Charity Cup,again losing to Clapton 2-1. We played 12 games in the April of that year.

We had a good season in the leagues with both the 1^st and reserve teams finishing 2^nd –

I only have the inside pages of the programme so do not know the cost. Advertisers included Ajax of Ilford and Romford, who I think were still there when I was a child.They sold Pukka footballs as supplied to Ilford, Clapton,West Ham, Fulham, Barking etc which ,they claimed “will outlast three ordinary balls.”Their jerseys were the cheapest in the country and they sold “Nets,posts,hose and knicks “ .Atlas Button Co. of Ilford Lane were manufacturers of high class Erenoids ,whatever they were, Edgar C.Porter was an electric light and bell contractor and Frank Coe was a taxi-cab proprietor.

 

People attending the match were assured that “in case of accidents or sudden illness,members of the St. John Ambulance Brigade are in attendance to render voluntary service “ which I remember being the case at the Vicarage Field when I was young in the 1950s.
