17. Saturday 27 August 2011 – Isthmian 1st Premier

Margate (blue & white hoops/blue/white) 1 – 4 Lowestoft Town (red/red/red) – Attendance 506

The only football club membership I’ve held in recent years was Ramsgate, so when Tabby suggested a seaside trip I was gob smacked. I put my red shirt back in the drawer and arrived incognito. Margate’s ground has seen better days, with a club house stretching the width of the pitch. I sense there has been no development here in the last ten years. The use of portacabins for changing rooms was certainly not their best redeeming feature. You never know what sort of game you’re going to get, so when the ball went straight out of the ground from the kick off, that could have been the highlight. However, Margate started in search of goals, crashed one shot into the side-netting and an audacious 50 yard lob had the visitor’s goalkeeper back-pedalling. The ball drifted over, but on 23 minutes Margate took the lead when Matt Bodkin latched on to a long pass and slotted home. Lowestoft Town responded by missing an open goal and a miss-hit shot struck the base of the post, but equalised on 33 minutes. Lowestoft Town opened up Margate’s defence with a searching cross-field pass, but a headed goal was not expected, as the home keeper was caught out of position. The second half belonged to Lowestoft Town, who outplayed the home defence. Lubomir Guentchev was having an inspired game on Lowestoft Town’s right wing and delivered a low cross for their second goal. He also helped himself to goal number three, when he finished astutely with the outside of his right boot and a further bout of poor defending by Margate attributed to the fourth goal. Tabby was full of praise for the Jolly Boys outing to Margate. The trip was given an extra dimension by two visits to the Lifeboat P.H. where we enjoyed gravity filled glasses of malt and hops of the finest flavour. Man of the Match: Lubomir Guentchev (Lowestoft Town)
