Looks like we have re-signed Carl Dennison and also signed James Warrington (from Walton Casuals), as Steve Smith is going to be out for the long term. Charlie Fanner has left for Marlow. It's on the official site now.

Best of luck to Charlie, a great talent, just bad timing with his departure, and hoping for a quick recovery for Steve.

Sod's Law!

I'm not entirely sure why we signed a new goalkeeper in the first place. Personally, I was happy with the Jacko/Fanner partnership. There were things in the team that badly needed fixing, and I don't believe it was the goalkeeper.

Jacko has stated (I can't remember if it was on this forum or in one of the local newspapers) that he believed that Bateman had implied that he would be our number one this season, with Fanner as back-up, only for Bateman to "betray" (for want of a better word) him and sign a new goalkeeper.

The end result of this was that Jacko and Fanner, recognising they probably weren't going to get many games, promptly upped sticks. Of course, sod's law took over, and our new (and by this point, only) goalkeeper gets injured.

Bad management, or simply bad luck?

On this one,I think Steve Bateman was unlucky.

I think Jamie Jackson is a compentent keeper but to my mind, his injuries and his erratic performances of the last couple of seasons haven't filled me with absolute belief that he was the right man for the current Slough Town keeper position.

I do think Jamie has been very unlucky not to have played more in the recent past [the Ricky Perks season] but he has struck me as nervy in some games.

I know this is going to sound hard but I didn't think he performed well against Chesham in the play-off final. Admittedly,he kept us in it in that year, in the semi against Hitchin and no one can question his loyalty to Slough and he is well liked by us all. He certainly has prescence in goal something I'm not sure Charlie Fanner or Steve Smith has but what I have seen of those two, they make up for it as very good shot-stoppers. I still think Charlie Fanner needs a bit more experience and is probably doing the right thing going to Marlow. We need an experienced keeper,if we are to get promoted and having an experienced man in goal gives defenders confidence, which Slough definitely need !

Whether Steve Smith is going to be the real McCoy only time will tell.

To be fair to Jackson, I would have liked to have seen him play for us with a half-decent defence in front of him. I think that would have been formidable!

I am also wondering what the odds are on Dennison/Warrington (whoever is in goal) getting injured on Monday, with Charlie Fanner watching from the other end of the pitch!

I agree Nathan, a goalkeeper is only as good as the defence in front of him and the rate we have leaked goals in the past would be enough unneeded pressure for any goalkeeper!!!

For the first time in a while in the Aylesbury and Uxbridge games we looked unbreakable at the back and any goalkeeper would have had an easy life!!! Move forward to Chertsey and Burnham, we go AWOL at the back and leak 5 in 2 games due to interruptions to a first choice defence but that isn't an excuse as Bateman has stated in today's paper!!!

I think Warrington is only 19/20 years old and Dennison maybe mid 20's!!!

the key word here is team yes i agree that a good back line will make any keepers life easier, but it requires the goal keeper to play his part in that as well , that not only includes shot stopping. the keeper has to be master of his area marshalling his back line to protect his goal. this in most cases requires man managment skills to get your back line to do as you ask them quickly without argument or delay. in fact in a lot of teams goalkeepers have been made captain of the side for that very reason.

What happened to Richard "big nose" Hayward?

Left Chesham (apparently definately not for the money  but because of the travelling involved) but now doing the travelling with Arlesey.

Perhaps we should give him the benefit of the doubt and say that his job spec might have changed.
