First black Chief Constable

I spent 18 years with a great company and on one occasion attended a meeting with Haringey council who wanted us to become a main contractor for them

I was in the company of a board director

A council official requested we tell him the ethnic mix of our workforce (circa 6/700 technicians) our director responded that we do not employ ethnics only technicians of agreed technical grades

The council man thought we had misunderstood him and said so, My director stated clearly "if a person meets the technical criteria we do not care or note if he/she is black,white or polka dotted and they get the job"

We did not get placed on the councils contractors list (I am glad to say) and I still believe our attitude was the only way for our ethnic brethren to be accepted and not highlighted as special cases

I totally agree with you. I work in the recruitment industry and do deal with orgainsations within the public or charity sectors and even some private organisations who have taken equal opps to a ridiculous level. I am totally against any equal opps monitoring. People should be employed for how good they are and not thei sexual, racial or ny other orientation. The only time discrimination should be allowed is if it's an Arsenal fan we're talking about!!!

We have to jump through the same hoops to get on local authority's Approved Lists for consultants. Although our firm has and does employ people from a wide range of religions and "ethnic" backgrounds, men and women, we can only employ who applies for vacancies!

 

We also sometimes have to try to demonstrate that we give peference to unemployed people. One council wanted us to prove that our first port of call when seeking staff was the Job Centre. Now in practrice this is not how to find professional staff - you go through the appropriate professional journals and/or agencies. But you can't explain this to the council jobsworths, who use the same forms for archgitectural firms as they do for builders seeking labourers.

 

I could rant on about the misuse of the word ethnic too. A person is defined by his or her culture, not colour, religion or passport. To attempt to define otherwise is in itself racist. Culture has many nuances - what used to be called middle class and working class groups are also cultures, and are more relevant than skin colour.

 

So there.

 

But I agree that gooners are indeed a race apart who should be vilified, ridiculed, persecuted and ultimately hunted down and killed.
