Hi everybody, was in work today and was thinking about football and the tragedies that unfortunately are part of our beloved game.

Now during pre season I've read through the forum a number of people have broken ankles, wrists, legs etc and wonder how many of these players have some kind of insurance in place, and as I know some are self employed they may nt have any income.......

So I enquired about a insurance policy and came out cheap enough at £15pm for peace of mind, just wondered how many clubs offer such a facility or if any of the clubs managers or chairman advise players to do such a thing?!?

everyone should read the Non-League Paper this week. Michael Buck (formally of Sandhurst) got sued for breaking someones leg in a tackle and in total the bill came to £100k!

In my opinion if you are self employed, then accept the risks that you may break something if you play football and you will be off work, hence get insurance for such a posibilty. Don't rely on having to sue someone to get covered.

Me personally, I am fortunate that I have health care with my employer and I can work from home.

Haha na johnno not trying to claim.

However at least have a conversation with people about it don't expect them to pay for it.... Yes we all love football but it doesn't pay the mortgage and never will for the majority of us, if the worse does happen then may aswell get some money to help!

We used to get a insurance guy in to speak to the players offering personal insurance at the beginning of the season some took it out and other didn't.

CCL clubs are obliged to have Personal Accident (PA) cover in place for players, but the extent of the cover is not specified. So you should ask your club for details of the cover, especially if you are self employed or do not receive pay whilst off work. Suspect you will find the cover will be very basic. I was involved with a case last season involving a broken ankle, and the policy paid out a one-off £100. But, of course, you could buy additional cover.

Definately players should carefully think about their own circumstances, particularly following the highly publicised case of Michael Buck (see last Sundays NLP). This case involved a so-called 'player on player' incident, where one player sued another following a tackle which left one of the players with a broken leg. The case was settled for £106k - so we are talking serious money here. These type of cases are NOT covered by PA. Fortunatley for Mr Buck his parent's household insurance policy contained a clause

which covered the settlement, so suggest players should check to see if they have this cover.

Nobody is keen to spend hard earned cash on insurances, but this is a case of being 'better safe than sorry'

Your right Middleman, ccl clubs do have personal injury insurance normally through the local county Fa as part of the requirement the CCL specify this, from past experience the cover & pay out provided are not very good compaired to personal injury ins.

indeed. maybe in future we all have to sign waivers before each game stating that to play we waive the right to seek compensation from opposing players should something happen.

Interesting thought that Chollocks, may be by signing league reg form it could state something to cover that, alternatively each club has to have public liability insurance, how about a section within that to cover such an instance

How can you be sued for breaking someones leg in a tackle?

So if i break someones leg there is a possibilty i will have to pay 100k ..thats ridiculous!

Football is a contact sport and every player goes into a game knowing that there is a chance they will get injured.....

A friend of mine years ago was sued for 10k for breaking someones leg playing for cobham. He is quite a big guy but a gentle giant and wouldnt go out to hurt someone just one of those things. He had to pay up...10k is a hell of alot of money but when ur talking 100k thats your house.familyetc.....

Thankfully i have BUPA with work so im covered for injuries.

Not sure how i would stand if i was to break someones leg tho...

as I said before, football is a contact sport and by playing the game you should accept the risks that you may get injured. If any injury would affect your work whether employed or self employed, you should be covered.

In this case, Bucky got a red card so all the evidence in the end came from the referee's report. No video evidence to back up that it was an accident so clubs if you want to protect your players from being sued, it appears you need to video tape every game you play.
