Eversley v Guernsey 20/08/2011

My match report.....

Eversley 1 v 2 Guernsey

I try and give match reports with a degree of impartiality but today its very difficult!....

First of all I need to answer a couple of posters on here directly...and may I say I do so with experience of all teams at this level and above......

Guernsey Donkey... 3 pts for your boys. Not a 3...4....or 5 nil win.... I was at the HW game and this was a bigger get out of jail for your team today ( not taking any credit away from the players who played today)...

Guvnor No 1.... there are at least half a dozen teams capable of beating Guernsey away from home and there will not be many 5- 0 away victories....AFC Wimbledon, Guernsey are not.

Now down to the game...

A game on a perfect quartered pitch....only the weather failed to show it's best as it poured down for every second of the game.Guernsey missing 4 players at a wedding, the home side giving a welcome return to Raymond spence, Peter Millington-Lee, Tom Moran, along with debuts to Asen Ogov in goal and Matt Baker up front... It looked like the visitors may well be vulnerable?

The game mirrored these thoughts as Eversley pressed the home side back from the first whistle. Matt Stamp and Ray Spence gave the visitors a torrid first 15 minutes with Guernsey's full backs getting beat ad hoc with a booking to the right back with his 3rd 'clever' foul in as many minutes. Baker headed wide, Spence had a free kick well saved, and then a fierce goal bound shot blocked by a defenders face! ....no doubt the vistors started slowly and could have been well behind. Credit to them and they wethered the early storm and for the rest of the half were the better side.

Ross Allen looked a constant threat and showed his danger on the break, rounding Ogov, only to see his shot cleared off the line.... The danger signs were there for the home side- on half an hour Massoquoi failed to intercept and Matt Loaring made no mistake when one on one to put Guernsey 1-0 up. For the next 15 minutes it could have been 2 or 3. Stamp went off with a hamstring injury and workrate wide wasnt matched, allowing Guernsey's right fullbacks to further his side's attacking options. Ogov made two good saves and the half time whistle was welcomed by the home side.

If the last 15 minutes of the first half belonging to Guernsey, then the first 15 of the second half belonged to Eversley as they went man for man and pressed higher up the pitch. Joey Taylor got a stanglehold of midfield, with Scully and Spence both having half chances. Then the goal of the season (see TRS video!). 35 yards out a Ray spence srtike to even make JJ stand up and applaud! 1-1 on 60 minutes and there only looked 1 winner.

Scully with the goal gaping missed a bouncing ball from 6 yards as Eversley pressed for the winner.... but Guernsey- especialy the always dangerous Allen had other ideas. It has to be said (although in increasingly slippery conditions) another defensive faux par on 75mins allowed Allen an opportunity which he doesnt miss and with a blink of an eye it was 2-1.

Disapppointingly a late onslaught didnt ensue as Eversley overplayed rather than hitting the danger area and asking some late questions. Guernsey's experience saw the game out for the 3 points.

Disappointed as personally we could and should have got something out of the game today and with the greatest of respect the oposition are in no way unbeatable.

Guernsey players and entourage were a credit to themselves and their Island. They were honest, humble, sociable, supportive and we would love to have them visit us every week.

They will no doubt improve as any league winning side does and yes they will win win the league but leagues above (having seen them at full strength as HW and today), they are not and i`m sure there will a number of sides giving them more than a run for their money this season.

Inmyday, great post. Really pleased that the true guernsey spirit is starting to shine through and GFC are starting to win friends. Most of us have never thought we were better than this league and as you so correctly say we ain't no AFC Wimbledon.

Can't comment on guernsey away from home heard was missin dyer rihoy etc today I do know at home people will be getting a footballing lesson they are a different class at footes lane

Gilesy08 you are quite right we were missing a few today and Dyer and Rihoy who make a massive difference to our team, without sounding to arrogant i will be surprised if we lose at home this season and if we can keep getting results away from home we could well win this league.

guernsey will win the league no doubts. but they are not the footballing gods that some are painting them out to be. eversley lacked a bit of belief for me yesterday. they dominated in spells and didnt capitsalise when on top and when guernsey weathered the storm and had their own peroid of posession eversley seemed to go into their shell rather than dig in and win the ball back.

Guernsey were more clinical, something you would expect of a team that could play at a higher level, taking two of very few chances where as eversley squandered a few good chances at 1-1.

guernsey defence is not great and will struggle against any front line that has some quality but likewise they are themselves a good attacking side and Allen is a very good player playing 2 levels below his potential at least (just like ray spence i guess)

and i agree that at home guernsey will be hard to beat but i must admit to expecting more from them yesterday given the quality of the eversley surface.

Remember that we were 4 important first team members down and we are still getting used to playing away in a competitive league. I'm sure we will improve away as the season goes on. I'm very pleased that we have grounded out 4 points out of 6 away so far, a great start in my opinion.

GD, seen your lads at horley, hartley and eversley and seen you with various playing personel. all my points stand. neat and tidy but suspect at the back where your quality doesnt match the rest of the pitch. missed the little quick winger yesterday, he is a great outlet for you. you will be too good for most of this league and will be matched by 6 or so and that is when i would expect to see your more senior experienced lads show their class to help you win those games.

The ref bottled it yesterday, anyone who was there must admit that Ray Spence was different class to all the players on show.Must of been fouled 16 times at least. The 8 ,think it was Black got booked early for a foul on him, then proceeded on 2 other occassions to commit similar bookable offences, which were not carded. The 2 J. isabelle as per programme but not him, was roasted all afternoon by the same player, was given a yellow for 1 tackle, but still continued to commit further fouls on the same player, but no action from the Ref,Phil Plaice.Maybe in the torrential rain, his book got wet. When are teams going to wake up that Guernsey F.C.play good Football, but all there Goals scored so far have been from COUNTER ATTACKING FOOTBALL AT GREAT PACE.balls over the top, leaving unprotected Keepers. Was amazed how Spence kept his cool, after the treatment that was dished out, then got booked himself for a fair tackle on the 2,but because the player was writhing in agony, the Ref bought it,but amazingly he continued uninjured for a further 20 mins AMAZING.Always nice to visit Eversley, and they have put together a decent side, they are top 3 contenders for sure.Phil Nash Referees secretary was running a line, wonder what he made of the Refs performance.

You can keep knocking us and blaming the refs when we win but we keep winning and will continue to do so.

How many games do we need to go unbeaten before you say "hey you know what Guernsey are a great side"

First of all may I say what a great forum the Combined Counties is (I wish the Spartan South Midlands Forum was as lively).

This is my personal opinion and having read the posts with interest felt I had to say it.

1. I am all in favour of non-league teams and their ambitions to climb up the non-league footballing ladder. Therefore I congratulate Guernsey on what they have set out to achieve for their club. Yes I do believe they will achieve promotion this season but the Combined Counties League has a number of good footballing teams that will make their task that much harder.

2. In all clubs you get fanactics, those that won't hear negative things said about their club and IMO Guernsey Donkey certainly has his blinkers on.

3. Rome wasn't built in a day, so let's see when the British winter really sets in and pitches become heavy, boggy and fast flowing attractive football has to take a back-seat. This in my opinion is when it sorts out the men from the boys. Who knows maybe Guernsey Donkey will be proved right. HIS team (that is the team in his eyes) will be challenging the Barcelona's of this world.

4. Who will be eating the humble pie at the end of the season - who knows? Guernsey Donkey might well have his beliefs come true and Guernsey will have wrapped up the title by Christmas or perhaps he will have to remove those blinkers and admit that Guernsey are just one of a number of good teams in the League.

Only time will tell - until then I will continue to follow the situation with interest.

I am passionate about my club and I do believe we are the best team in the league and I'm not afraid to voice my opinion.

I don't think we will have wrapped up the league by christmas, that is a very silly statement.

We do play on some poor pitches in Guernsey you know, not all our pitches are like Footes Lane so our players have played on bogs before. So thats not a problem.

I have only seen 2 teams play ( 2 home games ) and neither were good ( sorry if that offends but its my opinion ). I hope a good side arrives at Footes Lane this season ( i'm sure a couple of teams will test us ), this will make the atmosphere even better. We lost 6-5 to an AFC Wimbledon side pre season. Now they were good and even though we lost the game was amazing !

We will lose a few away i'm sure. We won't always be able to field our strongest side and even the best sides lose, thats football.

Of course I'm baised, Passionate and have blinkers on, thats what being a fan is about.

The Guernsey Press reported that Spence had an excellent goals to game ratio for Farnborough, who I believe play Conference South now (and probably would have been Step 3 when Spence played for them) so not surprising he has far too much talent to be playing CCL1...I see the Eversley managament team were formerly of Farnborough so presumably that's why he is playing for them? Spoke to someone who was at the game yesterday and reports are that the game was pretty even possession wise (though Guernsey weathered a strom for the first 15 mins), but that Chris Tardif in the Guernsey goal did not have too many saves to make (probably only tested by a tip over from Spence from 30 yards), and that the free kick by Spence was a wonder strike. Guernsey had 3 one on ones that they missed, but mainly on quick counter attacks. I also heard that Baker (formerly of goal scoring exploits for Knaphill and played vs Guernsey this season) has signed for Eversely...for all the criticism of the Guernsey defending I wonder how many other CCL1 teams will be able to handle Spence and Baker and restrict them to 1 goal from a free kick?

Fair comment Sarnia. Particularly when you consider that only one of the first choice back four from the muratti was playing. Bourgaize (many gsy apps) and Dodd (gsy player of the year) are not yet fit and would surely be first choice defenders, add to that the fact that the skipper was missing and we should be far stronger defensively in future fixtures. If all players were available there would probably be 6 or 7 different players who would come into the first 11. It's pleasing to see some strength in depth.

I think Smudges point is that players should be shown red and yellow cards, but only when they deserve it. I agree with his comments about yesterday's game, Ray Soence was targeted and was fouled time after time and got very little protection from the referee. Guernsey should definitely have been down to 10 men early in the second half.
