When is a friendly not a friendly?

Recommended Posts

In the wake of Ilkeston v Mansfield Town's abandonment...

http://news.bbc.co.u...ll/14400675.stm

Summary: Mansfield boss walked the team after three of his players were injured by the same opponent.

What are your own experiences with this sort of thing in pre-season? How well have the referees handled it? How well have your OWN PLAYERS handled it?

And, no, you CAN'T have roll on/roll off subs.... ;)

p.s. I wrote a bit about this topic:

Officials have been excellent in their attitude towards games,Players and Managers have played their part too.Mewey there is no such thing as a Friendly,as I witnessed at a Warlingham game.Player A elbowed Player B,Immediately taken off by Player A's Management. All games I have seen have been played in the right spirit though.

I've only seen one incident in pre season this year and both players were taken off rather than red-carded. Compared to the Ilkeston story though, it was handbags.

Personally i'm uneasy about this way of 'managing' an incident that would have warranted a very different result in a competitive match. Pre-season and non-competitive matches are subject to the same laws as competitive matches and by bending the application of them I don't think this gets across to those involved of the need and reason for consistency which is something referees are criticised for regularly.

It's all very well saying there's 'no such thing as a friendly', but this defeats the whole reason for playing them pre-season anyway. Surely, this is a chance for managers to see how their players adapt and fit it, and make changes.

It is NOT a reason to kick opposing players off the pitch, or even worse, into hospial !

I think I've only encountered two ugly scenes in pre-season matches, none this year, I hasten to add.

Bom is quite right, and I have witnessed a referee walking to the bench and informing the manager that if he doesn't substitute a specific player, he will red-card him and make it official. Best way, really !

I understand that Camberley had a player sent off on Tuesday against H+R Reserves. Ref has got stick on the Krooner Forum over it even though the poster admitted it was a red card offence !!!!

Choice quote: "a very disappointing game because of the ref".

The other thing the ref did wrong, apparently, was not letting Camberley field 11 players in the second half. :coffee (2):

foul, abusive, or insulting language, violent conduct and dangerous/reckless play, red card even if a friendly and make the rest of the team suffer. If the manager was decent he should set an example of the player who got sent off by showing howmuch he has let his teammates down by getting sent off and that in a competive fixture could be costly.

If a second caution or a professional foul, make then be subbed.

Apparently a very unsavory event all round ( The sending off ). Nice way to welcome PB back to his old club. We will not be sending a side down next year if thats the way we are treated.
