An extract from the latest SSML newsletter:

HERTS SENIOR CENTENARY TROPHY -1st ROUND

After losing two early goals to Codicote, Welwyn Garden City looked to be in danger of exiting the competition, but a late Leigh Nymm goal took them to extra time, where another from Nymm and one from Sam Cockhill took them through. Hoddesdon Town eased into the next round with a 3-0 home win over St. Peter’s, but there was no joy for our three other clubs who all bowed out to Herts Senior County League sides - Harpenden Town lost 5-2 at Mill End Sports, Tring Corinthians lost 2-0 at Wormley Rovers and Wodson Park lost 2-0 at home to Sandridge Rovers.

Looks like I'm not the only one to get things wrong, the score was in fact 2-1 to Mill End Sports.

Herts Centenary Trophy QF : Sandridge Rovers 1 Sun Postal 2. Att : 20 (hc). No admission charge; programmes free

Hovering around freezing in this part of the world overnight and 5 degrees by midday, this was never really in doubt though I had plenty of back-up should things have gone tits up. Sandridge is a couple of miles north of St Albans and the ground is just behind the village centre car-park on the High Street. The Spencer Recreation Ground is railed on three sides with the far side opening onto the cricket square. On the near side an overhang is bolted onto the clubhouse which would keep 50 or so dry but as the large dugouts are placed pretty much in front of it, the view wouldn't be the greatest. The four-page programme was basic but had the essentials and, like most Herts Premier clubs, I believe they issue regularly. Programmes were available on the bar.

There's a decent sized bar dispensing fizzy stuff and hot drinks; can't say about food as I nipped out at half-time having spotted that the GBG listed Green Man was about 30 seconds walk away - Old Empire was delicious - and the adjacent village stores had hot bakes and pasties so that was me sorted.

An intriguing tie on a bitter but windless day; Sandridge are in the Herts County top division (Step 7) with their visitors one step higher in the middle tier of the South Midlands League. They looked sharper throughout but Sandridge kept at it and could arguably have snatched a draw after going behind to goals on 45 and 59, with a reply on 74. On a rare day where I didn't spot anyone I recognised, there was thankfully no extra-time and no doubt they'll be dancing in the streets of Sun Postal tonight.

A London Colney v Kings Langley final then, that will be a decent game

I'm sure Sun Postal Sports and Metropolitan Police Bushey will have something to say about that

Karen - Why's that, can you honestly see beleaguered Sun Postal Sports going to Kings Langley on 11 February and winning

Karen – According to LATO Jimmy Greaves never said that and Bill Shankly never said

“some people think football is a matter of life and death, it's much more important than that”.

I stand corrected however it still does not alter the fact that football's a funny old game and anything can happen. Both Sun Postal Sports and Metropolitan Police Bushey have the same chance of reaching the final as London Colney and Kings Langley.

On a personal note yes I would prefer London Colney along with either Sun Postal Sports or Kings Langley to reach the final as it would make my job as programme editor for the final a lot easier.

Met Police have a number of the Edgware Town side that won SSML Prem before going on to do well in Ryman Div 1. They will give London Colney a game.

I wonder if Gavin knows, if so he will probably be there on 11 February
