Long ago!!! supporters used to get the final result of games by ringing a phone number, can that be done again, not all of us have computers and those people who are not within easy reach of TV find it difficult to wait to hear the good news. So is it possible to put a message on the phone ?

I remember the old days of trying to phone away grounds. There was only one line that was constantly engaged at the final whistle. You'd try and try and even when you did get through there was no guarantee that you had been told the correct score. Kids today don't know they're born, etc, etc.

I remember the even older days when the lad whose name I think was Roy Rogers (honest) used to sell the green or was it pink newspaper outside Dreamland on a Saturday night. If that didn't have anything there was the odd occasion when Butcher's Wholesale Newsagent down in the Market Place (Old Town nowadays) might have the results printed hastily somewhere down the side of the paper.

Other than that, pre 1957/Thanet Times and with no phones it was word of mouth during the week or wait for the Gazette on Friday.

Knew Roy Rogers well, he lived in Garlinge.

In those days there were three evening papers: The Star, Evening News and Evening Standard, they all had what was known in the trade as a STOP PRESS section down the side of the page left there purposely for the evening football and racing results, this was indeed done down in the market place prior to distributing them to the newsagents and paper sellers for sale.

I believe that the famous character of Margate 'Maurice' used to sell papers also, I seem to remember he used to sell them on the steps of the Dreamland Cinema entrance. He can still be seen around the town on his bicycle to this day . . . a real character.

one sure way is to get Radio Kent to broadcast the updates & final result - Matt Davison is the man to email - if enough people do it he will get the message eventually that there are more teams than Gills, Charlton & Ebbsfleet in Kent and give us more than just the odd referral

To be fair to Matt Davison he has to give out coverage based on league positions so Margate need to get up the pyamid to warrant better coverage. That said as Charlton are a London club and only Kent when they want to nick fans from other areas they should have the same coverage as the likes of Plymouth on Radio Kent

And your view Frankie if and when we meet Charlton in this seasons Kent Senior Cup ?

Ok-i know its impossible as CK is governed by the rule that states that 'Margate are not allowed to win cup games in any competition'

Michael - you seem to forget that CK is exempt from that rule (remember he won the Kent Senior Cup four times in his previous reign <it would have been 5 times but one Final was scuppered by a certain Mr Parmenter who nobbled the players on a beano before the match>, had ventures into the First & Second Round Proper of the FA Cup, and got us to the quarter finals of the FA Trophy!).

That we play more attractive football than they do and defeat them with ease.

The fact that for years they preferred to pay the £10,000 Kent FA fine rather than enter a team in the Cup also annoyed me

Radio Kent always give out our final result as some point during the Saturday Sports show if not updates through the afternoon. The issue they have this year with coverage is Ebbsfleet in the BSB Prem, then Tonbridge, Bromley, Welling, Dartford and Dover in BSB South. That coupled with Ramsgate, Folkestone, Maidstone, Hythe, Whitstable, Sittingbourne and Faversham in Ryman South means we might be squeezed as a sports news story. However, I have been working with Academy FM to inprove their coverage of the club. As a Thanet based radio station they have a grteater interest in covering us so if you cant get to a match, are not a Gate Radio subscriber, or don;'t have acces to a computer, they are worth a listen.

I have griped to Matt Davison not about the match coverage during and after the game but the football links in the shows before his one at 2pm - coming down from London for games from about 9am until lunchtime at varying times on matchday I rarely hear mention of Margate's fixture for that day - if just a few hear of it and wander down there's a bit more revenue for the club - they manage to always mention their regular favourites of course. Suggest if a few people email him in the couple of days before a competitive game and possibly supply a constructive 'hook' such as "Margate v Maidstone - the return of many old faces to Hartsdown Park Saturday at 3pm" (yes I know but you can see the point)

The easiest way to get up to date coverage is to open a twitter account, follow margate and click on the phone icon so that any updates are sent to your mobile

Once you have done this, there is no need to use twitter again, you get updates about everything all to your phone for free
