2 weeks to go...

Recommended Posts

So 2 weeks today we will have played our 1st game and hopefully have 3 points on the board... So with the squad looking like the below, does anyone think any areas need improving???

GK - Smith, Fanner

DEF - Sweeney, Sturgess?, Perkins?, Bowden-Haase?, Brown, Woozely, D.Murphy, M.Murphy?

MID - Sinclair, Coyne, Martin?, Coyle?, Logie, Swift, Byrne, Marsala?, Eales?

ATT - Burnell, Sonner, Abbey, Mpi?

Still a lot of question marks there!!!

As far as I'm aware we've only officially signed Alex Brown so I suppose you could put a question mark against all of them except Brown. Having said that, if you look at the squad section, even though it says season 2010/2011 the names of Marsala, Coyle and Martin have appeared so we can probably assume that they have signed.

I think we will struggle to socre goals as I still think we are crying out for a target striker for Sonner/Burnell to play off.

But apart from that I think that (on paper at least!) we should be looking good for the season. But I thought that this time last season, so we will just have to wait and see.

Well last season we only scored 91 goals with those two up front for most of the season though admitidly Martin played to and chipped in with some goals as well. But sonner and burnell scored the most and burnell was joint third top gialscorer in the league.

And if we keep Charlie mpi then we will have a target man. Our main problem last season was letting in way to many goals and way to many late goals.

By my calculations, Burnell and Sonner between them got 36 of those goals between them.

From our other forwards, Simon Martin got 8, Ben Abbey 3 and Gary Sippetts 2. Out of our 91 league goals, 49 were scored by forwards. That's 54% of our goals. 42 were scored by other departments; 33 from midfield, and 8 from the defence. We benefitted from 1 league own goal.

Whilst I am delighted that the midfield are chipping in with so many goals, I think it highlights just how reliant we are on the midfield to prop up the front line with goals.

God help us if Sinclair and/or Coyne have off-days, or we come up against big strong defenders who do the simple things well!

Another point I'd like to make is that there is little point of having good wingers putting in crosses and corners if there's no-one big to get on the end of them. Yes, Sonner is a little ferrett who can out-jump defenders twice his height, but why on earth should he have to? Because of his height, when he does win the ball in the air, he finds it hard to put any direction on it.

During the Windsor game, we had no problem getting crosses and corners into the box. Did we look like scoring from any of them? Did we ever feel as though a goal is only a matter of time? As it happens, our goal that day came from the only time we had someone big (Dave Woozley) to get his head on the ball, and direct it for Burnell. That is no coincidence.

well now we have charlie mpi who is a big strong attacker, hopefully he signs on.

The thing is its all about " hopefully " and " maybe " at the stage where things should be sorted ! if you look at all the question marks against a lot of those names CR has listed its still Ifs , buts & maybes ! do we have NBH and Charlie Mpi and Dom Marsala definitely on board ? three very good players that would make a big difference ! and does anyone even know where Perkins is ? these are the sort of things you have to be concerned about , its 2 weeks to go not 2 months after all ??

Perhaps all these issues are done and dusted and sorted it's just that we haven't been informed yet?

Every manager has there own way of running things and if SB wants to leave it until the last week or two to inform us of all the squad details then that's his choice.

SB is an experienced manager and we need to trust that everything is shipshape behind the scenes even if it does sometimes feel like we are treated like mushrooms

As previous stated the names of Marsala, Coyle and Adam Martin have appeared on the squad list so unless they have been put there by mistake, that would indicate to me that they have signed.
