Bedford Town v Slough Town

Recommended Posts

There is still an assumption on here that NBH, Martin and Sweeney will line up against Aylesbury but I don't see it.

Martin is clearly badly crocked and SB was being very optimistic about a mate when he said that Martin would make the last 2 weeks of pre-season. He won't.

Sweeney has been injured and had an operation. Again he would have featured by now if he was up to a fully fit mid August start.

No sign at all of NBH. Has SB actually said he is joining or has it been just forum talk. The longer he doesn't show up, the more I think that he won't show up. He's the only one on which we have no definite information at all.

So in that case the starting line up on 13 August is likely to be :-

Smith

Sturgess, Woozley, Brown, D. Murphy

Sinclair, Coyne, Swift, Logie or Marsala ( SB will likely play Marsala but I'd play Logie as defensively this midfield looks very lightweight )

Burnell, Sonner.

This therefore includes 7 of yesterday's starting line up, including four of the back five. They should have done better against a team who spent most of last season just above the drop zone in their division.

I'm not getting too upset about the friendlies, but from what I've seen I'm not convinced that we've resolved the defensive failings of last season. Sweeney will improve things but he may not be here until September. NBH would improve things too, but we seem to pinning an awful lot of hope on him turning up. Let's hope he does.

This forum is unreal, you state your opinion and get slaughtered... I would be positive Staines but I don't see a lot of positives at the moment... As a team we are disjointed, unorganised and seriously lacking any commitment... Last season we weren't great, in fact we were so inconsistent it was untrue... As someone who has supported Slough for 36 years and pays to watch them week in week out, I am entitled to my opinion, at the moment I am negative because I drove to Bedford, paid my admission fee only to see us play awfully with no sign of the management team or the majority of our 1st choice players 2 weeks before the season starts, wake up people and stop sugar coating what is going on at the moment... No leadership, no commitment and no dignity, END OF!!!

What a load of crap. The first five games of the season will not decide anything. Hitchin raced away in the last two seasons, with people saying they had it won by Christmas. Yet neither time were they champions. Bury and Arlesey ground out results during the winter months and then were incredibly consistent in the final run ins. That is how you become champions. We are going to need at least 30 wins to be champions and they are not all coming to come in August are they?

You are entitled to your opinion but you are just constantly mithering and when someone disagrees with you - you say they know nothing.

I can't agree there Martin. The first five games of the season are amongst the most important we will play this season.

If we are to mount a serious title challenge, we have to hit the ground running. Remember the 2001/02 season where we didn't have a pre-season? It took us a fair few weeks to get going, but by then it was too late - we were playing catch-up.

5 games, regardless of when they are played, can make or break a season. Remember our bad patch around October time last season? It was only about 6 or so games, but it ruined our chances of challenging for the title, and for the rest of the season we were really struggling to get into the play-offs.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. This club should be looking to win this league. We are the only club in the division ever to have played in the Conference. Even when we were doing badly, we had attendances most clubs at this level would love to have. We are still considered to be the biggest game of the season by many of the smaller clubs in the diovision, purely because of our (comparatively) recent history as the top non-league side in the area. Struggling for 5th place simply isn't good enough. Not only would it be a massive under-acheivement on it's own, but it would also symbolise a complete lack of progress on the playing front.

And for those who will undoubtedly say "well it's a tough league this year" - you say that every year! If our current management can't move with the times and get us seriously challenging for promotion, then maybe we should consider getting someone in who can.

And NO I DO NOT want the manager's job.

Well, personally I'd much rather have that than "This forum is populated by Yes-Men - no criticism is allowed".

It seems rather strange to be typing this, but this forum is not a fan-club. As long as it's intended to be for the best interests of the club, then I believe any criticism should be allowed.

Again, here here Nathan....

I won't sit back and not say a word when I don't think things are being run properly, and the moment for a club of our size, it's a bit mickey mouse!!!

Stand by for me to be shot down in flames for not saying how wonderful we are!!!

Teams that have management / players away on hols with 2 weeks to go to the serious business and still not sure of they're best starting eleven dont win championships ! so you can forget that ! you say the first 5 games will not decide anything ? well lose the first 5 and getting 30 wins from the next 37 is some going dont you think ? you are right Cookham Rebel is entitled to his opinion and i suspect he feels he is watching an under cooked , ill prepared team at present ? now where have we seen that before ? CR may never have been a manager but it doesnt take a genius to spot the signs of a team that will be hard pushed to make the play offs again ! do feel free to come back and rub my nose in it next May if a miracle happens and they get your 30 wins to be champions and i will be delighted ! :)

Amen to that Nathan ! If only people would remember that ! we should have a team capable of winning this league and getting back to the level Slough Town should be at !

I havn't got a clue as to what will happen this season, so I might just have to turn up, watch and find out. I still think that progress on te new stadium is the most important issue. Once that is sorted we will have some momentum (for lack of a better word) behind us.

Nathan just because people dont agree with you does not mean they are "yes men", they just see things differently to you that's all.

Good god If this board is like this pre-season, I think I had better start selling tin hats in my shop!
