Bedford Town v Slough Town

I just can't believe other teams would allow this to happen, manager and assistant manager on holiday at the same time? Players coming and going as they please? Maybe it's because they don't get paid during pre-season, it's scandalous... Looking at our first 5 league games, one word springs to mind, TOUGH!!! I'm pretty sure Sinclair was sat in the stand!!! I'm not panicking, just think it's a shambles with 2 weeks to go, the players and management have 6 weeks off in the summer, go on holiday then not slap bang in the middle of pre-season... God knows what team will turn up at Chesham, say for example NBH turns up for the 1st league game, he will start without playing a second previously with Woozely and Aylesbury are no mugs.... If players are injured they should still turn up and encourage the players on the pitch, just find it unreal, do the management have any power of the players at times?!?!?

To be fair, there is often a good reason for taking holidays in July/August if you are married with Children.

I find it more difficult to understand If you are single. Apart from the fact it's the most expensive time to go on holiday, if you've built up a good level of fitness why jeopardise this when you are striving to get yourself as fit as possible before the season starts? We'll just have to accept that there must be a very good reason why a player would do this.

If Steve Sinclair was in the stands then it can only be that he wasn't risked due to injury.

Well,I suppose it couldn't be helped due to Dave Anderson's late departure and Fred Cummings arrival. Probably just unfortunate timings and we musn't forget Slough are only a second rate/part time amateur outfit, it's not like we're in the Blue Square or Conference South or even a step 3 premier division. However, what is a joke, is all the players going on holiday when Bateman's away, as if they needn't bother showing up as it's a waste of time as there's no one to impress. Mind you there's not ! lol !

Even John Lawford is only helping out, isn't he?

What happened to the new coaches ie Dave Woozley, Steve Perkins for this season.

Piss up, brewery, run and can't are words that come to mind !

As far as we know there are only 2 players on holiday Paul Coyne, who has been away for 2 weeks and should be back next week and Danny Burnell who probably won't be back until the Aylesbury game.

It makes no difference if you think Slough are a 'second rate/part time outfit' or not, the plain facts are, if we want to get out of this division we have to try and be as proffessional as possible at all times whether it's 'only pre-season' or during the season.

The post match report, I would assume will be given to SB by John Lawford and Dave Woozley as they were the temporary manager and club captain.

Simon Sweeney,Sam Bateman, Tony Mendy, Steve Perkins,Paul Coyne and Danny Burnell. I make that 6. Also NBH and Adam Martin missing ? That's an awful lot.

Admitedly, Paul Coyne,Ben Abbey and Danny Burnell have played in pre-season but only one of these has looked in good shape for the start of the season.Might not be the case, when he comes back from his boozy holiday [ DB] !

I agree,Reading Rebel,we should be trying to be better organised, disciplined and a tad more ' professional ' if we want to be the best team in this division.

I've got a feeling we're going to get tonked by Chesham this Tuesday. I hope I'm completely wrong but I don't see Slough being any better in the third season under Steve Bateman, as we were in his first full season, when Chesham wiped the floor with us on every occasion. We should be aspiring to be what Chesham are, both on and off the field.

Normally I try not to post on topics which are getting stupid, but this morning I cannot resist. Why must we have this regular topic pop up where some people just keep moaning on and on and on....

While I was not at the game yesterday, this whole idea of 'professionalism' at step 4 of the semi-pro leagues seems a bit silly during pre-season. These guys work for a living and play football in their evenings and weekends, so it can't be easy for them to take holidays the rest of the year, so I am willing to forgive the fact that a few of them are on holiday during pre-season. Yes we lost 5-1, but to a team well established at the level above. I'm not convinced that all the Harefield and Amersham fans went away saying 'oh no our team is so terrible because we lost 6-1 to a good team from the level above'. Also, some of the players are genuinely injured or unavailable for other reasons, so why do people keep going on about their absence??

Also what's all this 'I don't see Slough being any better in the third season under Steve Bateman'??????? By that logic we may as well just give up now, sack the manager with less than 2 weeks til the season starts and give up all hope of ever doing better than reaching the playoffs, and go and support a premier league team who always wins. Get a grip, it's pre-season and we have several new players in the team, that's how it works!! Pre-season is not the time to be judging the team or the manager, or even on the first game of the season, how about 10 or 15 games into the season? Pre-season is about fitness, especially at the semi-pro level.

Problem is if we were to beat Chesham on Tuesday everyone would say how great we are and we will easily win the league...if we lose we are the worst team in the world and we will not make the playoffs. The players can't seem to win either way. I for one cannot wait for the season to start so maybe these idiotic postings can stop.

They are opinions, it is not a way for any club to be run at any level... Pre-season is about gelling a team to hit the ground running, at present none of us including the players have a clue who is staying or joining for that matter... I agree with 3spirit but he is not saying sack Bateman neither am I as I am a believer in continuity, however it's the same old story with pre-season preparations for the 3rd year running and this season more than the last 2 seasons our opening 5 fixtures could make or break our season in my opinion, 5 tough games against teams who will be fitter than ours, ability will only get us so far before other teams legs get the better of us... Take Danny Burnell, young lad on a lads holiday, I don't blame him, when I was his age I was the same but I didn't play football at a good level like he does, so he's got his fitness to a point now gone on the lash for 7, 10, 14 nights which will take him 2-3 weeks to get over... I've gone on other clubs websites of a similar stature to ours just to see what their preparations are like and surprise surprise they are all getting the majority of their 1st choice teams playing... These posts are not idiotic, they are talking sense, and are not moans, they are stating valid points, to win this league or get promoted via the play offs you need to be prepared to fine detail and we aren't... Yeah we tonked Crawley Green, Harefield and Amersham, they are poor opposition and I would expect an 11 from our squad to beat them, against Holyport we were lucky I'm told, we didn't play Tring off the park and against Windsor we looked the Combined Counties team... I just think it's same old same old, I hope I'm proved wrong but I just cannot see us mounting a title challenge now I really can't!!!

No, the reality is that people are over reacting to something that is not really that important just because we lost a friendly game to a higher level team. If we had won peoople would be saying that we are wonderful because we won with a load of our 'first team' players missing.

Look at the bigger picture and take those blinkers of, it is not a over reaction it has happened the last 3 seasons.... If we had our 1st choice team out and lost so what, but yesterday highlighted the lack of organisation with this team, all pre-season games are about gelling a team, the team yesterday and in other games so far would be lucky to finish mid table... These players get paid to play, it's part of their life and jo

No industry or team has the majority of their teams unavailable when preparing for a new job/season... It's a joke!!!

Positivity POSITIVITY =]

I personally believe (not hope) we will make at least play offs.

Call me a dreamer but we HAVE got a good team and most of them have played together so we don't need as much gelling as you think. The only part of the team which need gelling is the defense but you may have noticed most of the pre season games we have player we have had a consistant defensive line up, the only person missing is sweeney but that is because he is recovering from an injury and an operation.

Maybe im missing something but not that long ago cookham rebel said he was finished with this forum but funnily hes back and is just as positive as he was before. (jut an observation)
