FA Cup - Hornchurch 2 Billericay Town 1

A pleasant afternoon, a bumber crowd and ding-dong local derby cup tie - what more could you want. Well, a win of course, and we got it but it was tough going.

It was a strong start from us and the Billericay keeper Jerome John was called into action in the 6th minute pushing over an Andy Douglas close range effort. 7 minutes later and John could only watch John Keeling's goalward effort from 18 yards, but must have breathed a sigh of relief as it came back off the post.

Shortly after Billericay went up the other end and won a penalty, Daniel Gay adjudged to have held Danny Hockton down in the area after they both collided going for a loose ball. Hockton stepped up and netted from the spot and had to do so a second time after the first one was ruled out due to encroachment. Our equaliser was also from the spot, and eagle eyed referee spotting some pulling by Dave Reddington on Vinnie John in the 23rd minute, Steve West converting.

Early second half chances fell to Steve West, from a header 2 minutes in and a 20 yard free kick on the hour, but they went narrowly wide, and these were followed by an amazing point-blank save from John from a volley from..errm...John (Vinnie that is). Hockton thought he had scored with 15 minutes to go after getting clear of the defence and slotting home but his celebration was cut short as he was adjudged to have fouled West in the process.

The winner came with 5 minutes to go of normal time. Scott Gooding floated a free-kick from half-way towards the penalty spot and onto the head of Jamie Southon who rose above everyone else to nod the ball in under the bar.

Line-up:- Gay, Gooding, Kerrigan, Adedeji, West, Southon, Keeling, Sterling, John, Douglas, J Martin. Subs not used:- Locke, A Martin, Rowland, Maynard, Collier (GK).

Roll on the next round of the draw,

My Men of The Match were our Central Defenders "Mr Reliable" Ollie Adedeji and Steve West kept their attack at bay and allowed The wing Backs to push up with confidence.

Also Vinnie and Dougie are looking an intelligant partnership knowing what eachother are doing and held the ball up well for the wingers. If the two of them had played abismal then i would be a little worried but they both played very well yesterday and i'm sure the goals will come for both of them, sooner rafther than later.

Hopefully this is the first step to a decent cup run. Getting to the first round proper would do the world of good. The team is taking shape now and is looking good. However, without trying to sound too critical of the bloke, I do not see why Andy Douglas is keeping Taff out of the side. Hopefully he will turn out to be a good player for us but I don't think at this moment in time his performances warrant a place in the starting line up. Taff scored 20 last season and has scored a few this, so it is my opinion that he should be in the starting line up. He links well with Vinny John too.
