Tring 0 - Slough 2 sat 23 aug

Recommended Posts

Tring were a good side. I like going there - a really nice club.

Mpi's goal was fantastic. Chasing a ball into the penalty area he was second favourite to get there against the defender but got in front of him, held him off then hooked one of his extra long legs round the ball to loop it into the far corner past the goalkeeper. Very special goal. I hope we can hang onto him at least for a few games until he inevitably moves on to bigger things.

My first Slough game for a few years.

Thought we played well and looked the better side today. Possibly 'cos it was their first game of the pre-season?

A few nervous moments in the defence from crosses in the first half.

A great couple of saves late on in the second half to deal with otherwise not too troubling a time.

What was the studs-up sliding tackle on their goalkeeper all about ? Linesman commented that Slough player had said earlier in the game that he was gonna 'clatter the 'keeper' so wasn't very bright to actually go in like that ?

If it wasn't a friendly he may well have been off ?

We played quite well for periods of the game with Burnell and Abbey showing some good link up play and we really should have scored a couple of goals in the first half.

Both being on the small side, any ball played in the air to Burnell or Abbey was comfortably dealt with by the Tring defence.

In the second half, when Mpi came on, it gave us something completely different up front with his height and pace to worry the Tring defence and he scored a terrific goal to boot.

Second half debut for Steve Smith in goal in which he made a couple of point blank saves to keep us in front. Excellent capture if we can sign him.

If we sign Smith, our chances of challenging for the league title just got a hell of a lot better... I'm still not sure about Alex Brown, not the quickest and for someone so tall he does not win nearly enough headers... God help us if we didn't have Woozely, man is a different class!!!

Jacko may be on his way but who knows... Looking at the squad and trialists, I have to say that duel registration with regard to Jacko, Ben Sturgess, Aaron Eales, George Coyle may be the best option but Bateman will make those decisions... I am really uneasy with Alex Brown now I've seen play 3 times, I can't see him getting in the team, the Tring supporters were shocked he was playing for us as they felt his level was their level and even then he struggled!!!

Give the guy a break, it's pre-season. If he hasn't played at Slough's level before he will need time to adapt.

Alex Brown played for Walton Casuals last season who play in the Isthmian South league, which is a Step 4 division. So it's at the same equivalent level as Slough in the pyramid system.

I think, Cookham Rebel,is jumping the gun a bit, as it is very early days to see the quality of Alex Brown. Plus it's not a forgone conclusion that he will play every game, as I would think NBH would be preferred with Dave Woozley if we play a straight 4-4-2. However, Brown, and if we get Perkins back, gives us cover and options in our centre of defence, which certainly strengthens our back line to what we had last year. Also if we keep Ben Sturgees,we've also got the more than useful Simon Sweeney who can play in the centre half position as well.

I think Alex Brown will do well for us.

From what I've seen he's a physical no nonsense centre back which IMO is what we've been lacking.

Don't forget he's playing with what we think is a fractured wrist which cannot help when physical contact is probably best avoided.

He's playing through the pain barrier so lets give him the support he deserves.

Really enjoyed the game on Saturday. As was stated, Tring were a decent side. They have a good set up there, nice ground and decent real ale as well!

Very impressed with Charlie Mpi when he came on for the second half. Even at this early stage of the season he looks in great shape and certainly not lacking pace.

Well taken goal as well. MOM for me though was Dave Woozley at he back- rarely put a foot wrong. Interesting selection issues for Steve Bateman when NBH returns.
