Set Piece Innovations

Recommended Posts

I love new ideas on the football pitch. Ever since I saw this famous free-kick by Willie Carr and Ernie Hunt for Coventry:

I liked the faked corner-kick that Man Utd did a few seasons back that I then saw copied by several non-league clubs. Also there was Giggsy's throw-in onto his back last year.

I like interesting penalties as well and so this latest one is quality in my view:

Can't believe the grief the guy is getting for it: http://www.guardian....-uae-awana-diab

I notice that Totti did the same thing last year but in a warm-up:

Do managers here encourage their players to think outside the box, metaphorically?

Any players here come up with any innovations that may only have been seen by three men and a dog? Tell us!

Many years ago, I forget the ORIGINAL team who did the following: I seem to remember Man Utd did it with Rooney and Giggs against Chelsea in 2009 when they scored but disallowed........... disgraceful !

Must assume it's on YouTube somewhere ?'

A corner. Player on the ball to take the corner waits for a fellow player to approach him, he is then told to leave it so can take it, but as original corner taker moves away he rolls his foot over the ball so it goes out of the corner circumference, then the other player collects and dribbles it to the edge of the box for either a strike at goal or cross.... I've done this with 2 teams, the first team we hit the post, the second team some time later got pulled up for ungentlemanly conduct.............!!!!

Merc and Kroonzzz is that correct.....presume it is ?

oops yeah NG that was what I meant instead of faked 'free-kick'. As I say I saw it done by a few Ryman teams. I clearly remember one not telling the linesman first so when he was flagged, he loudly moaned "But I saw it done on Match of the Day!" cheesy%20(2).gif

Here it is:

As a Chelsea fan I will say that flag is up and whistle goes so they didn't bother defending it.

Quality, where's that hole to fall in !

Thanks for finding it on You Tube Bommie, I don't know how to do all that stuff by getting it on our website, thats for you guys.......all I know is how to say LOL ...ha ha ha !!!! I just wish I could recall when I first saw this, but it was some time ago.........

Ha Ha now you would say that being a Chelsea supporter....!

Correct Bommie ! When managing not too long ago, I discussed this corner with the officials knowing that it could have the Ungentlemanly Contact tag.

They replied, as long as I inform them before the game and the player mentions it to the linesman what they are going to do, then they will allow it, yet in a previous game we were pulled up for a free kick ..........so annoying as you only get one chance to do it !

I ask, why is it necessary to inform the officials ? To me it's genius and played within the rules of the game....misinterpretation mmnn ?

Come on Merc, Kroonzzzz (other officials) whats your take on this, what's the actual rule ? .............VP do you know ?

Did this once when playing for Wembley in the Rymans around 6 years ago. Batesy who was just Captain at that time before stepping up as manager, told us he would be informing the ref before the game and we just had to make sure we tell the lino at the point of when we were doing it during the game. Referee approved it but it didn't go as slick as you see in that clip of Man Utd's as their full back on the post realised what was going on, closed it down and blocked the cross!

We did this at Raynes Park Vale in the late 90's, similar thing lads spoke to ref, told them to advise lino, and off we went. Last minute of first half, away to Ashford Town (both sides unbeaten at the stage) - worked like a dream, and centre half headed home equaliser. Got better after that, and we nicked a 2-1 win with the last kick of the game. Ok, so they went on to win the league, but at that stage we were top of the league, and on fire.

I have had a few teams tell me that they intend to do the corner routine where a player touches the ball and moves away leaving a team mate to come and dribble with the ball

The reason they should tell the referee is that if the referee is unaware of the initial touch then he will award an indirect free kick against the player who then dribbles with the ball upon his second touch.

Not sure of the need to tell the assistant though ... what if the corner is on the opposite side from the assistant?

I agree with Footy Mad. The referee needs to be informed as if he/she believes the kick had not been taken 'in secret', it's going to look like a 'double touch' and therefore IDFK the other way.

This sort of thing is pretty obvious. Take a player about to take a free kick. He moves it into position with his foot. An opposition player then runs forward, nicks the ball, and scores, claiming that 'the kick had been taken'. Fair? As referees, 'No Surprises' is a good mantra and 99% of players would not complain if the referee brought that back.

Why tell the assistant? At the level in the video, if the assistant is not aware he/she is going to flag for the 'double touch'. The referee will be trusting the assistant pretty explicitly at that level and will just blow the whistle immediately. Note that both the referee and assistant in that video officiated the WC final!

Same applies to teams wanting to take quick freekicks too.
