LEAGUE CHALLENGE TROPHY – 3rd ROUND

 

Leverstock Green had to dig deep to come up with their second Cup victory in 5 days as they triumphed in extra time over plucky Division Two side Risborough Rangers. Leverstock looked to be home and hosed with a 2-0 half time lead, but a spirited second half fightback by the Rangers took the tie into extra time. This was a classic old fashioned cup tie, David v Goliath played on a pitch made sticky after the recent rain and frost, noisy spectators, lovely hot cuppa’s from Risboro’s own Nigella, cold showers, darkness due to a power failure and Risboro’s front two of Jonny Horne and Ben Williams posing problems for the Premier Division side all afternoon. Leverstock took the lead in the 36th minute when a Lee Bircham free kick was headed clear, but only as far as Max Farrelly, who shot home at the second attempt after his first effort was blocked by a defender. The game continued to ebb and flow but Risboro just couldn’t find a way through a determined defence, and Leverstock’s second goal, when it came just before half time, was a bolt from the blue and potentially an arrow in Risboro’s heart. Pritchard’s shot came from a good 35 yards out and flew over the outstretched arm of Tovey and in off the underside of the bar for a stunner of a goal. Risboro came out for the second period determined to give it a go, but it was Leverstock who very nearly scored…..twice, with two efforts that were cleared off the line. Buoyed by their escape, Risboro pushed on and Ben Williams followed up a Tinsley save to crash home the rebound and give the underdogs hope. Andy Hird could have levelled it up 5 minutes later but his shot cleared the bar. Risboro eventually got the equaliser their efforts deserved The scores were eventually levelled in the 75th minute, when a poor clearance from Bircham put the Green under pressure, and after Miller miscued his headed clearance, Williams was on hand to smash home. Risboro sensed the Leverstock were tiring but were thwarted by some classic “Italian style” defending as they searched for the winner. Leverstock pulled a flanker in extra time, bringing on the fresh legs of a Lightning Bolt run–a-like, sub Junior Owusu-Akonor who made an immediate impact with a run at goal before threading a pass through to Pritchard, but with only Tovey to beat, Pritchard side-footed the ball inches wide of the post. A couple of minutes later Owusu-Akonor got the goal that mattered when he slotted home following a headed knock down from Pritchard. Risborough refused to lie down, and went close a couple of times during the second period, but it was not to be.

I remember in 1973 it was a guaranteed Arsenal v Leeds FA Cup Final until Sunderland beat Arsenal at Hillsborough, Hillingdon Borough v Tring Athletic on Tuesday night was exactly like that
