Locked Thread - question to the moderators

Nathan

Recommended Posts

May I just ask on what grounds was the "Discipline and the lack of ! !" thread locked?

I do not believe there was anything truely out-of-order said on that thread. The thread I think raised valid points regarding some of the players attitudes on the pitch. Maybe some of the posters were a little less than tactful, but that can be solved with a polite request to tone down posting in the future surely?

If some of the players disagree with what has been said, then they are entitled to come on here and say "I think you're wrong" or "try and see it from my point of view" or something along those lines. Then the strength of any arguements given will decide what affect (if any) the thread will have. Jacko, to his credit, has done this. He was man enough to offer to discuss an issue face-to-face with a supporter, and not throw his toys out of his pram and demand the thread be locked!

I did not contribute to the thread (and had no intention of doing so), but I think that this action says alot about the mentality of some people on this board and their attitudes to what should and shouldn't be discussed, in the interests of not upsetting Team Unity, when the evidence I saw on Tuesday evening was that it is anything but united.

Simply locking these sorts of threads merely gives the impression that the players cannot take criticism, and must therefore be protected from it at all costs.

Message for Jacko, and whoever is bothered about my thread. Perhaps in hindsight I may have been slightly slanderous.

So for that I'll apologise. However,I do NOT apologise for most of what I've said. What's so wrong in wanting to watch Slough Town FC play fairly and to have respect for our manager ?

I have no grievance with you,Jacko and while I can see that you feel some kind of loyalty to your fellow players, I feel that it is a misguided loyalty in this matter.

There is no point in meeting up with you, as it will only cause animosity and wrath aimed towards me by your fellow players who I've said my piece about. You may think that's cowardly but rows with working class footballers aren't my bag anymore. It's not that I'm scared to front up with any of you but where will it lead. Probably to some sort of revenge by violence,as we see on the field of play, as you're bound to pass on my identity to your friends [the players I've criticized].

So what will this gain.

I do not want to hide behind the computer and once things calm down, sometime in the future I will chat with you face to face.

As for Alex Brown,I sympathise with his fractured wrist and yes,Jacko, there was reckless challenges from both sides but did we need Alex inflaming the situation by his vocal tirade at some of the Holyport players. No, what we really needed was a couple of cool heads that can calm these situations down. It's a pity Steve Perkins wasn't there,as him and Dave Woozley may have provided rational, reasoning heads.

Anyway,I'm off now to vandalise a bus stop ! LOL !

Although a moderator, I did not take the decision to lock the thread and so am not at liberty to explain why the decision was made. My response here is as an individual. I also need to put my hands up in the air and state I was not at Holyport on Tuesday night.

Despite this, some of the stuff written in the match thread looks a bit OTT to me. Going on some of the descriptions, the match has been made out to be a bit like the Uxbridge 'friendly' from a few years back. Now for those making accusations of thuggish behaviour, can anybody really say that Coyne's 'tackle' is in the same league as what we saw that day from the Bamfords and company? Or from some of the stuff we've witnessed from Jarvis?

Referring to our players as thugs and reprobates overstepped the mark in my mind. By all means be critical about performance, and the discipline issue is something that Bates needs to get to grips with, but personal insults are not welcome.

For anybody who wants to throw back the concept of free speech, you will note that the thread is still on the forum. Nobody has been censored. The thread was descending into territory that could have driven a real wedge between the playing staff and the supporters, and one of the moderators decided to nip it in the bud there. No deletions, no bannings. Simple moderation.

We're a month away from the start of the season and we all want the same thing, for Slough Town to be successful on the pitch and things to move forward off the pitch. Surely it makes more sense for everybody to pull in the same direction.

Absolutely agree with BFR and the comments made by Jacko. Thought the thread was way over the top and far too critical of some of the players. We are suppossed to be SUPPORTers. The clue really is in the word. Yes we may can have opinions about certain players qualities, formations, tactics and signings and yes a fans forum is one of the places that these can be aired but there is criticism and then there is taking a personal opinion and going way over the mark.

I also think some of the comments are a bit too of the armchair manager variety. I would do it this why and that etc. Fine - the country is crying out for new coaches - get yourself on a FA Course get some qualifications and do it - see how easy you find it.

All of the players in question have been brought to the club by Steve Bateman and he knows many of them from prior connections. He knows what to expect and hopefully how to get the best out of them. I just think we can all get frustrated and some show it in different ways - this doesn't mean they aren't good players and a benefit to the team.

I have faith in Steve Bateman who has turned us from relegation material to promotion candidates and in the staff and players he brings to the club. I will try and do my bit by supporting the team. Occasionally I may fail (abandoned games sping to mind) but that is only because I want us to do the best that we can.

Its a good day as the fixtures are out and we edge nearer the end of silly season and can look forward to the rollercoaster ride that will doubtless be our season.

Come on you Rebels!

I'm not one against free speech and i usually disagree when threads are locked i even asked for the thread in which myself and the ex were getting abuse which was all incorrect to be left open BUT-----

I feel it was right to lock the thread, it was all getting a bit out of hand and some of the comments were far from fair.

We are a local small football club and we should support the players who we must remember turn out for a small wage whilst having a full time job. Ok so on Tuesday some players were a little rude, but I myself have (on many many occasions) sworn at refs/lino's and managers and have on occasions thrown shirts at managers when not happy for being subbed, as well as doing the odd revenge tackle.

These things do happen in football, im not proud of them (although taking out an ex international still makes me smile) Its all heat of moment and should not be taken as more. Coyne/Byrne/ Sonner are fiery characters and you take that out of their game they might as well not be there.

These guys seem to be villified now Dean Harper (who i still think is a legend) has left.

Lets get behind the players.

Ps fair Play to Jacko who is someone i have the utmost respect for (even when he had the George Michael beard) for saying how the players view these comments.

Firstly, I have never been involved in a Slough Town side that doesnt "play fairly", rash tackles happen every week at every game!

As for Bates, i known him for 17 years and if he isn't getting respect, then the players will be dealt with in his way. You saw petulance on the pitch, this was again dealt with by Bates in the correct manner at the appropriate time. Heat of the moment exchanges occur in all walks of life, this does not mean there is a lack of respect.

Loyalty yes, misguided no!!

I spend 3 days a week for 40 weeks a year in the company of the named players (barring Browney obviously) as well as our time away from football and know them considerably better than you do. For example I know that Byrney does not think he is "god's gift to football" and neither he or Coyney are "thugs", and NONE of the boys are "low lifes". I'm sure most people would be offended if a close friend was called those things by a random passer by? This is no different! I get that this is a forum for discussion and points of view, i also get the fact that supporters pay to watch a Slough side and have a right to comment on anything football related.....but the thread (in my eyes) became personal and although the gripes were not with me, i felt compelled to defend those mentioned. (i know you have now rescinded your comments)

Finally, I am dissapointed that you feel having a chat with me will end in violence, i'm not to sure how to take that comment tbh. Over a ten year involvement at this club i have not had a crossed word with anyone and i don't intend to start now, maybe that's because i am a "middle class footballer" as opposed to the "working class footballers" as that makes a difference???

Anyway, line drawn.........moscow as i have 2 bus stops in desperate need of repair, both have COYR painted on them, very odd

Jacko,

I totally agree that there was some personal stabbings going on in some of the comments but I'm sure you know from reading this forum that most are 100% behind the team and Steve Bateman and know that our time is coming for promotion under his guidance. It is just a few who take it too far on this forum and as I and others have said before, we would welcome more players on here to criticise us too and I am glad you have done that.

Heres hoping we can get off to a good start and mount a serious title challenge this year.

COYR!!!!!!!

Personal attacks of any kind should usually result in a thread being locked to prevent things getting out of hand.

I was actually very surprised that the poster in question came out with some of those comments, i.e. about "low-lives" etc. There are a couple of posters on this forum whose comments have made me consider whether I should even read and contribute any more, but free speech is free speech. By the way, I don't see 3spirit as one of those.

With any forum, the onus is firmly on the individual to moderate themselves, and unfortunately, in my opinion, some fail miserably.

It's also unfortunate that one of the players has seen fit to get involved as a result of things said. I'd have been offended too. How much do we really know about any of the players?

We are all in this together - come on people.

I think the players should stay off the forum as its obvious they do not like criticism in whatever form. In days gone by the criticism would have come from the terraces but you invariably didnt see the players standing there argueing with the crowd, they had to get on with it. These players must be very sensitive to come on here with their backs up. Also somebody must have touched a nerve to get the Windsor Chairman on their forum trying to explain various rumours he wasn't happy about, when all and sundry knows their management issues were a done deal from the off. Keep the forums for the fans!!!!!!! There is a lot worse said by fans during games so what next, be careful what you say at a game just in case somebody does'nt like it. ( You should only give praise and agree with everything ) Yeah right!!!

I would like to withdraw the words 'low-lifes' and 'thugs' and 'reprobates' from my posting that has riled and offended so many on here and in the team. Even I think I was OTT on this and in hindsight, I wish I had never used those terms. That's the trouble with written form [it can do a lot of damage without realising it ,when you send it]..

I will, however, have the courage of my conviction and stick by all the rest I've said, as this is my honest opinion. It may not be tactful and may grate on people's nerves but I still stand by it.

It certainly wasn't meant to be personel,Jacko. It's not like I'm attacking the features a player has ie big ears, big nose, disabilty etc?

I was trying to relay how I view our shortcomings as a team, in our efforts to become champions of this division.

Everybody seems to look through rose-tinted glasses when viewing the Slough team but want to turn a blind eye to all the obvious flaws of our side and why we're not being as successful as we should or could be, given the talent we have as a squad and the 'supposed' better budget.

I want Steve Bateman and his group of players to be successful. Just like every other fan does on here. I happen to like Steve Bateman both as the player he was and the manager he now is[although, I don't know him personally, or any of the players come to that]. He presents himself well and is diligent and most of all ,he manages like he used to play.....;- fairly.

That's not to say that I'm in agreement with everything he does but like someone else mentioned here, I am only a Slough Town FC supporter ! and a back-seat manager like every other supporter up and down this land.

Like all fickle supporters,I'm no different. Sometimes the wheels stay on and sometimes the wheels fall off.

The Holyport game, the wheels fell off and got stuck in the mud. In my view, the indiscipline and far from appealing behaviour let a lot of players down.I was hugely disappointed that my 1st pre-season friendly had been such a 'negative' affair. So this was why I wrote up on the forum. A place where we supporters are supposed to be able to vent our frustrations with other supporter's. Of course I expected to ruffle a few feathers but I didn't expect this fiasco.

It appears now I'm the pantomime villian........and these thin-skinned footballers are just boys being naughty boys!

So Jacko and everyone I'm holding up the white flag. Let's hope WE'VE all learn't from these last few days and that the Windsor game is a pleasure to behold and is played in a spirit of good will, friendly competitiveness and all round comraderie to produce an entertaining game both sets of supporters and both teams of players can enjoy.

Whilst I can see where you are all coming from, I think we can say that (in the abscence of any official explanation) the thread was locked becasue of the crime of airing "unhelpful opinions".

Referring to our players as thugs and reprobates overstepped the mark in my mind. By all means be critical about performance, and the discipline issue is something that Bates needs to get to grips with, but personal insults are not welcome.

I honestly cannot see where the line was crossed in that thread. That is my opinion. Yes, some of the comments needed answering, but that has been done in a professional mananer by one of the players, without the need for the moderators to get involved. All that was discussed was essentially some of the players attitudes on the pitch on Tuesday, and the continued problem of dissent, which has carried over from last season. Whilst some of the posters may have been a little direct in approach, IMO that is better than to constantly dress it up, because we've been dressing it up for quite a while now!

I also think some of the comments are a bit too of the armchair manager variety. I would do it this why and that etc. Fine - the country is crying out for new coaches - get yourself on a FA Course get some qualifications and do it - see how easy you find it.

Please don't start that argument again! The issue of player dissent towards both the match officials and our own bench was raised by several people on Tuesday night at the game, and a few more on this board. That's why we already have qualified people in charge of that side of things, and it appears that on this issue they are failing. Now, if you want to ignore them for pointing this out becasue they haven't got their FA/UEFA badges, then that is you decision, but the alternative is to pretend that the problem doesn't exist.

I feel it was right to lock the thread, it was all getting a bit out of hand and some of the comments were far from fair.

Ok so on Tuesday some players were a little rude, but I myself have (on many many occasions) sworn at refs/lino's and managers and have on occasions thrown shirts at managers when not happy for being subbed, as well as doing the odd revenge tackle.

The thread wasn't about "let's have a go at Player X because I don't like the look of him" or becasue he made a mistake. It was about the lack of professionalism from some of the players on Tuesday. Even at our level, a bit of professionalism isn't too much to expect I hope? Being booked for dissent, making "revenge tackles" and swearing at our manager because he dared to take you off in a PRE-SEASON FRIENDLY (and I'm taking other people's word on this one - I didn't see or hear this), hardly reeks of professionalism does it?

Somebody on one of the other threads mentioned that apparently the Holyport bench didn't think much of the attitude of our team, mainly becasue of the said points. What damage will that do to our image and our reputation (such as it is) I wonder? Locking threads that dare to raise these issues will only do it yet more damage IMO.

N.B. One of our posters openly called another poster on this board a Twat. Nothing was done, the post is still there, despite the post being reported. IMO, that is far more worthy of moderator action that this.

Very well said

Nathan, we are damned if we do, damned if we don't.

I'm presuming that you are referring to the Crawley Green Reporter Needed thread. Interesting that you say this was reported as I've not had any correspondence about this. At least one mod replied urging people to grow up, which I think was a reasonable course of action. Knowing Staines Rebel as I do, if he had a serious issue with what was written on the forum, I'm sure he'd have been in touch.

Given 3Spirit has withdrawn some of the words used in the locked thread and has conceded they were OTT, perhaps you will reconsider your opinion that no line has been crossed.

Locked thread nothing to do with me as well. I'll say one thing on the subject though.

Just an idea, but how about looking at it from a different perspective and maybe we should ask why certain players do things like moan to the ref and complain about things?

May seem odd, but i’m personally glad they do at times...

It’s not for the sake of it, it’s because they care – they want to win for the club and the supporters - they want to be winners on the pitch - they want to do well for Slough Town FC.

If people cast their mind back when we were signing some big-name players at non-league level a good few seasons back certain players seemed to turn up on the pitch, seemed to barely break into a sweat, not even looking like they were bothered at times. This bunch of players are very different. I'd much rather have this bunch.

The moaning is probably a sign of frustration in their performance or the teams performance when things don't go their way, like they did Tuesday. Holyport played well, frustrated us and cancelled us out for the most part. and put in some tough challenges, as we did as well. They probably deserved a draw in the end and our players were probably frustrated we did not do better against them.

We've kept the majority of the squad from last season. Have some very good players like Adam Martin, NBH back with us by the looks of it; adding to the quality we already have, so lets look forward together.

I'm afraid I can't accept that - retracting a comment or rewording it for whatever reason does not mean that the comment in question was out-of-order (and I'm talking about the underlying points made in these posts, not simply the way in which they were put).

I could make a post saying (for example) that the manager Steve Bateman was the worst thing that has ever happened to the club. Say I later retract the comment and apologise. Was the original comment wrong? That is a matter of opinion, but my opinion would be yes. Was it out-of-order (to the extent that it warranted the thread being locked)? I think not.

I am not saying that any comments made on that thread were right or wrong, but it appears to me that "whether or not the comments crossed a line" doesn't appear to have been the basis on which the decision to lock the thread was taken.

So it's ok to insult someone but when someone fights back at that insult it's frowned upon...

Reading all the nonsense on this forum this week, I'm sad to say but I'm done with it...

Here's to the Rebels Promotion winning season...

Cookham, I was not condeming or condoning either you or Staines Rebel on that count. My point was to compare the moderators behaviour on the "Discipline and the lack of ! !" thread, with their inactivity over your post.
