Holyport v slough

Recommended Posts

Decent game with both teams tempers being tested, some dodgy tackles and some poor referying.

Brown scored from a free kick which wasn't cleared properly.

I was impressed by Browns' performance as he showed that he is good with his head and with his feet and has some pace.

Dom marsala who played winger/attacker had some good touches and got passed people but didn't quite have the end product but with a few games and a bt of confidence I think he would be a good addition to the team.

Ben surgess who played right back was fairly decent (not as good as sweeney) but he didn't make many mistakes and would probably also be a good addition.

The number 14 for us who came on for the last 15 or so minutes also impresses most of us behind the goal and reminded us a bit of roy gumbs, tall strong player not afraid of working and making a challenge.

didn't get much of a chance to see the other trialists.

overall a decent game and also the first trophy of the season, lets hope that in a few months time we can add the league title or play off title to that.

Also when Logie was subbed off he wasn't to pleased and he and Bateman had a chat. (I think Logie was displeased by the refs decisions and argued about them with Bateman, so hopefully it isn't much)

When Byrne was subbed off he slowly walked straight to the changing rooms so not sure what that was about.

As always a decent run out against Holyport and if Danny Burnell had his shooting boots on he could have had 2 or 3. To Danny's credit he got himself into the right postions and on another day would have tucked a couple away.

Of the new boys, Alex Brown took his goal well and looked solid enough. Ben Sturgess did well at right back and for his first run-out Dom Marsala looked good and if he signs will be a very good addition. Didn't see enough of the other trialists to comment.

Unfortunately, the game was marred by some very poor discipline again!

Logie was subbed for arguing with SB when he made a mistake and refused to accept it was his fault. When he came off they had a slanging match in the dug-out.

Sean Byrne argued with SB when again he was told that he had made a mistake and refused to accept it was his fault. He then, in the heat of the moment, proceeded to call SB a knob. Why SB never subbed him is beyond me. When eventually he was subbed 5 or 10 minutes later he walked straight to the changing room without shaking the subs hand etc.

This discipline issue must be stamped out before the season starts.

We were solid enough in defence and midfield, and Jacko didn't have alot to do. But I feel a major area of concern is our attack. We didn't cause many problems, apart from a couple of glaring shots and lobs. I don't recall either of the Holyport goalkeepers having to make a save, this despite the fact we had no trouble getting the ball to the final 1/3.

The sooner we get a target striker who can distract and disrupt defences, the better.

the discipline tonight was horrendous, a good number of the established players need to be sorted and soon because they will find that they will find that they will spend most of the season suspended and a lot lighter in the pocket, they acted more like petulant teenagers who think they know it all, if that is the way they want to act then perhaps batesey should invest in a naughty step.and also perhaps arguing with the players on the pitch and then in the dugout is not the best way to deal with it. lessons need to be learnt quick or we will find that we will be in the mire again this season. and tonights match was a poor show due to the lack of discipline very dissapointed.

The discipline has to be sorted. The whole reason we weren't in te title race last year was a lack of discipline. If it happens again we will by be in it again. Sb is the manager and is there to criticise and the players should respect that.

We are a team supposedly and should be working together to be the best we can

And don't forget, one of the principal men of ill discipline last season, Paul Coyne, managed to get himself booked last night. In a friendly ! His caution was for a petulant little kick at a player who had beaten him (again).

Fred Cummings looks the sort of man to get amongst this. Maybe SB, for all his managerial skills, just doesn't come across as forceful enough for some of these characters. They need to be told who's in charge and if they don't like it, they can clear off. I know football is a game of passion but constant moaning is not passion.

Otherwise it was a litle concerning that for large parts of the game it was impossible to tell who was the side from a higher league. I know it's a friendly and I'm not getting concerned about it -yet. Let's see how we do against Windsor. They'll be up for it and we'll have to do better than last night.

Holyport are a much improved side though under Derek Sweetman. Lets not forget that side won a treble of trophies last season.

Only the 2nd pre-season game and the first for a couple of the players. A long way to go yet.

A lot of frustration from players yesterday against a vastly improved Holyport team (Credit to sweets) Didnt see Logie incident but i belive the Byrne incident involved him not covering a midfielder and dropping back with him as that was when Bates was yelling aty him at start.

To be fair with Paul Coyne, their number 10 desperately needed a kick after some of the filth he had got away with.

Good to see a fit Ben Abbey and Brown looked very good.

IMHO Man of Match would go to Sonner/ Coyne

According to the official websit ethe other two trialists are:

Baboucarr and Canavan

I assume that is lee canavan previously of |Burnham

Any news on who Baboucarr is?

Maybe Baboucarr Jarra who is 18 and played at Beaconsfield SYCOB last season

True, but they were playing 2 levels beneath us last season. Let's not forget that we made the play-offs last season.

Holyport have only just started pre-season just like the rest of us, and thus can't have been too sharp last night.

I can't help but think that if we come up against well organised defences (in our league) who do the simple things well, then we will struggle to score goals, regardless of who we've got out on the wings.

Our goalscorer last night will be out for a bit with a fractured wrist
