Basildon Player spurns Everton advances....

Recommended Posts

I was told about this earlier in the week but didn't want to post until I'd confirmed by speaking to the player which I have done this evening.

At the start of this week Everton made a formal approach to sign a current Basildon player and were allowed but were rejected out of hand by the player who wants to remain with Basildon.

Not your average story.....

I would say bollox but as you've spoken to the player, there may be something in it.

All I will say is that if an ESL player did spurn such a club, then he either knows another club of similar size, closer to home are on the radar or he is completely bonkers,or it could be a different everton, don't make sense to me!

Basildon Town and not United and Everton Sunday league side?

Although i have known of players at ESL / Ryman level who turned down the opportunity to play at a higher level, admitedly not football league but higher up the non league pyramid, so they could remain with their mates on a Saturday and Sunday side too and they would be able to be close to family and friends and saw football as enjoyment rather than a career move and were happy with their full time employment.

What part of Eastside Urchin's post did you not understand. Almost definitely Basildon Ladies, they have some very good players.

Hi Mark, Ponderosa will probably give you a more informative reply, but my understanding is that whilst the Ladies team are "aligned" with Basildon Town FC, they play under the name of their sponsors, C&K Basildon Ladies FC.

Top marks to Hookey but maybe had a head start through being at the Selex ground. Yes it's C&K Basildon Ladies FC and the approach was made to one of our ex-England internationals from Everton of the Premier League. At last night's training session we also had a current England U21 international, a Newcastle United striker and the East Thurrock captain in addition to the regular squad. Was hoping to get a rise out of the other Basildon clubs accusing us of throwing money at the team to win the league when we don't pay any player but looks like they took the night off. Eastern Region Premier next season, equivalent of mens' Ryman Premier, Basildon can produce a successful footballing team.

Not needed for this season, installing perimeter fencing before the season starts to be above the standard required for our current status. Looking at a number of options for floodlit matches if we get promoted the next two seasons running when we will need them. Be nice to work with our neighbours on this?

im perfectly aware of what they need and when they need it,err i think you will find if you erect perimeter fencing in a field it will be vandalised in the same way that the 'dug outs' have been, lets not beat about the bush-Everton play in a stadium you play in a field-not sure which neighbours you are referring to but i cant think of many with floodlights.

Well done to Basildon ladies for recruiting top players, and then keeping them ! I think that Everton are a super league side?

Seems like they have a good thing going over there. I shall have to go over and watch a match, have they got any games coming up Penderosa?

Just one other thing, I thought that they played at the selex club, not in a park?

While everton ladies is a tempting offer, with arsenal ladies they are the best side in the country,I don't think it's that big decision for the player to stay.

There is no real money in the game in this country, this player while probably offered a wonderful opportunity, probably felt that they were comfortable living where they are and keeping their job (if they have one).Maybe if it was a full time position the outcome may of been different but as I said, there's no money in the ladies game in the uk at the moment.

I thought that I had read somewhere that super league clubs were able to pay their players? I seem to remember an article in one of the national newspapers saying that the FA were giving each super league club a grant of £250k a year, and that they were able to sign players on contracts on up to £20k or £25k a year.

The figures may be wrong, as my memory is going as I'm getting older, but I'm sure that they can, and do, pay their players. How long it last is another matter, as unless over a period of time they can generate decent crowds, I cannot see the FA subsidising it forever.

You are right in that £20k or £25k is not a great deal to give up your job (if you have one) and move across the country. Mind you, if someone had offered me that sort of money when I was younger, I would have taken it to play football !

Smudger, you are well informed and understand the situation. We at Basijdon are still a little shocked and awed at what we have and have to keep pinching ourselves to remind us how far we have come in the last three years. We now have 4 ex-England internationals and a U21 training with us ( we cannot dream any further!). Let's see how we fare this season?
