I HEARD IT THRU' THE GRAPEVINE........

I don't necessarily agree with the argument that clubs who groundshare have a financiaL advantage over clubs who do up their own grounds.

Obviously the price varies from club to club but a few clubs have been open about the prices paid. Off the top of my head FC United of Manchester are paying £80000 a year to use Bury FC, I'm sure I remember Bedfont Green saying their groundshare at Windsor & Eton was costing £15000 a year, Sloane in the Middlesex League (step 7) have just turned down an offer to share at Haringey Borough (step 5) as they can't afford the £5000 a year asking price.

I know doing up your own ground isn't cheap but there are grants available and, once you've done the expensive stuff like stands and floodlights, maintenance shouldn't be as much as the cost of a groundshare.

We all know that Surrey isn't the easiest place in the world to get a football ground with lights built so I've got nothing against teams who do use other grounds.

The thing which sticks in my craw on ground shares is, the original fa guidelines (VP can correct me if i'm wrong) stated you can only ground share provided you show proof that long term you have plans to develop your own ground or find a new site within your 'own area'

With several sides this doesn't seem to be the case. Not harping on about E/Ewell, but for years they've been banging on about returning to the borough and I can understand the difficulties with councils and finding a suitable plot but 20 years !!! Surely something should be afoot by now, and if not, why not?

To my mind they've had long enough and should be given a timescale to secure a ground in the area or resign from the CCL. harsh i know but to my mind and many many others they have no intention of 'going home'

As far as I know the only FA guidelines now are that you can't use a groundshare to secure promotion or avoid relegation. This is the issue the Ryman League were having with some clubs who have their own grounds but are using another one for convenience.

AFC Wimbledon & Kingstonian have been in a long term groundshare with no immediate end in sight and the FA aren't going to kick one of those out. Bromley and Cray Wanderers are others who've been sharing for years now.

In Europe there are groundshares right up to the top level. It makes economic sense for both parties.

Whatever happened regarding Liverpool and Everton sharing a brand new stadium? I haven't heard that mentioned for a while but it would make sense.

There was a magazine in the 70's, think it was 'Goal' but not 100% sure that foresaw all this financial mayhem coming and recommended purpose built ground sharing throughout Britain.

They suggested

Sheff Wed and United

Nott'm Forest and Notts County

Liverpool and Everton

Blackburn and Burnley

Arsenal and Tottenham

Bristol City and Rovers

Dundee Utd and Dundee

Hibernian and Hearts

Man Utd and Man City

They omitted Rangers and Celtic stating the religious divide would be too much

I'm sure I remember Bedfont Green saying their groundshare at Windsor & Eton was costing £15000 a year,

+ VAT

And I'm sorry Smudge but your earlier post about groundsharing clubs and their players not treating it as their home is not correct, well not in our case anyway, our players and sometimes staff had to be thrown out of the ground at W&E and Yeading before that as the bar staff wanted to go home!

That was me GP. I did say that 1 or 2 teams that groundshared got promoted and refered to the clubs I had visited in my 2 seasons of watching CCL, so I didn't visit Stag Meadow when Bedfont were playing there, so I could not have experienced your comments which I have no reason to doubt, which can also be justified by winning the CCL Premier.

I understand that Bashot Lea are paying Godalming @ £15000 - £20000 per season to groundshare with them. Not sure who fronting that money, 'cos it's certainly not the attendance they get, along with their 'alledged'' high player budget. I did hear that someone at Badshot Lea is quite wealthy, so it could well be him whoever that is ?

To be fair fans too.. If Windsor had a long away game (particularly on a Tuesday night) we'd often come down and get behind Bedfont Green. I was there to see them lift the cup! Great day!

I hope I can cover some of the points made by some of the members,Epsom& Ewell have tried and failed over the years with 3 or 4(that I know of) potential sites, subject to planning permission and various other problems that crop up,as soon as the locals find out a football club intends to move in next door people start to think of noisy people, trouble, litter, smell of burgers etc and start getting petitions off to stop it happening,Someone also said about Epsom being happy to groundshare without knowing that there in the middle of discussions with people over another potential site in the borough, another thing that people dont realize is that the people who deal with these matters at the club change from year to year for whatever reason making it harder to get things sorted out,Please dont be nieve enough to think that if you walk past a park in Epsom over the next few days and you go and stick a blue&white flag in the middle of it that 6 weeks later you can build a 2500 seater stadium on it
