Surrey Premier League appeal

Recommended Posts

I know it's a long shot but has anyone got a copy of the Surrey Premier League final table from 1989-90?

Gareth at Ashford Town has tried everywhere he can think of to get a table to complete their records without success - Surrey FA, the main FA, local newspapers, Surrey History Centre, local museums etc.

I know a few people on here played in the league so was hoping one of you may be able to help.

It's possible someone might have a programme from the end of the season that has a nearly complete table which would be handy or one from the beginning of the next season that has the previous year's table in it. The latest table Gareth's got is from mid-March.

He's got all the Ashford results from the season so we know which clubs were in the league. Sadly most of them have folded but if anyone has contact details from someone who was involved in the league at the time that'd be helpful. Teams like Monotype, Ditton, Frinton Rovers, Surbiton Town, Ottershaw, Bagshot (I'm gonna try their secretary myself) etc. Full list of teams at: http://www.ashfordto...t/view/1326/57/

Got this sorted now.

NLN - There was a Frinton Rovers still playing in the Croydon Municipal Sunday League until a couple of seasons ago. They must have been linked to the Saturday side at some point. It looks like the Sunday side stopped in February 2009 as all their games after that were awarded to their opponents. May have played their games at Mayfield Road? (Croydon Athletic FC)

This is Smudge's territory really.

Nothing at all to do with the original Frinton Rovers,Mayfield Road.Although the Manager of the Sunday Side in that name used to lease the old Frinton Rovers site off the Council, for about 10 yrs.So a dead end there V.P.C.T.F.C. Croydon Athletic now lease the site.

Well done Smudge.

Proves that, somewhere on the internet, someone knows the answer about everything. Tis the best tool ever invented for us anoraks and no mistake.

Not sure if my first sentance in my last post was clear though - someone on TK's forum has stepped forward who's got the league table Gareth was looking for so Ashford's history is virtually complete. Apparantly our Whitelaw was great at keeping records but only from a certain point in the 1980s. I've also heard some tales about his playing 'style' from a mate of mine who used to watch Ashford in the Surrey Premier days and some Sunday team from Staines who a few of them also played for but that's another story for another day. Maybe Weeble was there at that time as well.

Indeed, VP - now I'm at home on the laptop, I can post here, rather than lurk!

So, the first thing to do is thank you for your help, and putting the shout out on here for me. Whitelaw's records have been a great help and he has kept them from 1982, when he became Secretary. The list of results you linked to was compiled from a CD full of club-by-club Word files and some detective work around County Cups!

The hero of the hour who had the missing table is the one-and-only Tony Ford, formerly of Sandhurst Town, who also supplied some other tables way back when.

The original Frinton Rovers were Champions of the Surrey Premier League in 1989-90, but according to the Croydon Advertiser of the time, they were denied promotion as there were gypsies camped on the ground and this prevented them from making the required ground improvements to gain entry to the CCL. I have no idea whether Ashford would have still been promoted had Frinton done what they needed to, but it makes for an interesting angle for that particular chapter of the book I hope will eventually come from all this!

As for Whitelaw's playing style? No idea... I'm far too young to have seen him play! (Sorry, AC.) Incidentally, I'd also like to have a chat with Weeble at some point for the book... despite going over to the "dark side" he remains an Ashford legend and I'd like to include him in the relevant section. Weebs, could you drop me a PM, please? We can either meet up for a beer, or I could "interview" you by email.
