ITGC Cup in the 1980's

Hi there can someone answer me a quick question.

On wikipedia page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Margate_F.C._seasons

it lists us as ITGC cup winners a few times in the 1980's. I always thought the ITGC cup was the Isle of Thanet Gazette Cup between Ramsgate and Margate, but we were Thanet United in those days, so who were the games against?

You have to give the bloke who's put the Margate Wikipedia page together a lot of credit for doing exactly the same research that I did and even finding exactly the same obscure photos I dug out of places like Margate museum. Amazing that we never ran into each other.

I'm a man of means, of slender means, but if the financial side of getting the website back up is an issue I am prepared to be some kind of unofficial sponsor for a period. My spending on concubines has abated recently so I'm able to afford it (unless, of course, you're going to tell me it will cost £5,000 a month).

The ITGC was insigated to raise money for the "Herald of Free Enterprise" disaster fund, it was meant to be a one off, but seems to have carried on. I believe the first game at Hartsdown raised quite a bit. This was very much appreciated by all involved including myself as I was at sea that night on board a sister ship.

I remember refereeing that one.

Having played in the reserve sides for both teams and knew many of the players,I ended up not being very popular that evening!!! I certainly learnt a lesson, but enjoyed the game (even though the circumstances of the match meant that itwas a sombre occasion).

I know, I know, I know; however, when you compare what is given these days (at the highest level) I was in good company (I can still picture that particular challenge and the uproar it caused)!! Anyway, let’s hope we actually get a few players that can sort out the refs in this league. "Cunning" is the right word, too many points lost through stupid, unnecessary sending’s offs when a bit of guile/cunning would have avoided finishing with 9 or 10 players. Bob Harrop was the most intelligent player I played with; he thought about when to get stuck in, say the right thing to get a player wound up and generally make it difficult for a referee; great days!!!!

Plenty of refs were conned by Frank Ovard in those days, M1BDA. Just wish we had someone as cunning as that now.

Frank had a system where he sort of kicked his own ankle after beating a player or three, sensational player. Never seen any player before or since that won so many spot kicks. That 1987 game wasn't sombre for people of my age. First chance many of us had ever had to see us play the Rams and Frank almost beat them on his own.
