Fitness Test

Recommended Posts

this is getting frightening and this is from a Ref who has to rely on these people for crucial decisions, rather you than me FM.

On some occasions Duncs the better assistants are those that MAY struggle with a fitness test but have lots of experirnce rather than those that can go from 0 - 60 in 5 secs but have little experience in runnning the line

On the subject of needle matches, I'd like to ask the refs present - do you ever get forewarned by leagues about possible niggly rivalries or are you just expected to deal with whatever you are thrown into??

The League does not forewarn you of any likely problems, and probably rightly so. There are some occasions though when it would have been nice to know that it all took off when they played each other earlier in the season!!

Well I ask as I was present at a game the season before last where there was a hell of a lot of needle between the two teams before the game and the ref walked in blind to this. Maybe if he'd known it might have helped both him and the temperature of the match.

Opening it up to people here, do you think refs should be made aware of bad blood etc or not as it may always be biased opinion that might affect decisions?

I can't speak for other refs but when i receive my fixtures i prepare for the games by looking at the previous meeting between the teams that seson (if they've played already), the teams respective league positions, current form, reading their websites and previous match reports, looking at this website too, etc. When at the ground, it is possible to pick up on 'atmospherics' and asking your ARs if they've been involved in matches with either team before can yield some useful background information, i.e. player X is gobby, player Y can be feisty, etc, etc. Watching the warm-up and the teams preparation on the pitch and in / around the tunnel can also give some pointers. Obviously, if the teams are involved in a bid for promotion or are trying to avoid relegation then the 'ante' is likely to be raised and any game with something at stake has the potential to have dramas.

A personal example from last season occurred when i was appointed to a 1st v 2nd game in the league between two sides on good runs of form, well-supported and ambitious in their plans - both ARs appointed were very experienced in their own right as referees and, to me, that was no coincidence. The assessor too commented before the game that the game could be feisty but having done some research i was prepared for it. As it happened, there was no needle to my mind, the players were excellent and were only interested in playing and both managements were well-behaved.

In summary, any game has the potential to cause dramas, often where you least expect it. However, doing my own preparation for a game would forewarn me of potential dramas and any additional information would be considered appropriately. As referees we're there to be neutral, unbiased and objective and i would hope that being so would ensure we refereed what was front of us at that time as opposed to letting what we'd heard previously affect our decision-making.

Interesting stuff Gluck. I wonder how many other officials would be that thorough. I do get the impression that a lot of them (rightly or wrongly) treat every game the same in this respect and don't forewarn themselves. As I said before maybe they will that any fore-knowledge would influence their decision-making.

Bommy, I for one think that the CCL referee secretary and referee panel should use the events from a previous game/s which would/could highlight potential problems before, during and possibly after the game. It will stand in good stead not only for them but to nominate a stronger more experience referee, that's all I've suggested from the outset. I cannot see any biased decisions being made, altho' I CAN if a young inexperienced ref's a game which is too big for him/them. I've seen this first hand by players bullying refs for the last 2 seasons to gain an unfair advantage.

Personally, I think it will prove that the CCL referee secretary and his panel have done their homework which can only be good for the game and certainly avoid a young, inexperienced referee lose confidence by being bullied by players and management. We need to nurture these young referee's from taking games which will be too big for them otherwise, I can see these young guys making a 'U' turn taking an ''I don't need this'' attitude packing in a HOBBY which they really like doing !............Again I say, without referee's there is no match...........!

I doubt the CCL referee secretary comes on this sight, so perhaps Whitelaw could mention this topic/subject and its related comments, in hope that we could get some response from the CCL ?

not protecting anyone.

and if you dont like the abuse, u have a few options....a) dont come on here anymore, b)rehearse the rhyme "sticks and stones...." c) try not to create subjects or make comments that put you in the firing line d) dont retaliate to abuse, e) sometimes think about what you're writing and how people perceive your opinions and comments, and finally f) quit this constant bickering between you and Duncs, please.

Its easy to say to the rest of us "well dont read it if u dont like it", but you both have good points many many times but you both also hijack topics and we dont know until we open up a topic whether its you and duncs having a go or not. It gets really boring!

Please one of you let it drop!

I think it is rather funny to a point. The reason being that this chap Nice Guy is not a conformist, and he is literally taking the P*ss out of us every time he posts. In his reply to Footy Mad he conforms by typing in NON CAPS LOCK,to the rest of us it is CAPS LOCK.do agree with Johnno though that it is getting past a joke.So Solutions please?

I think NG likes to be centre of attention cos as you say, the typing in capitals was an issue, to which he claimed the computer was broke, and then fixed the computer, which then broke again, and then was asked by someone to refrain from typing in capitals as it portrays shouting, so NG typed in lower case and now types in both for the mood he is in......

he does have some very good points but doesnt half bang on about them if someone disagrees.....
