Fitness Test

Referees fitness test passed this morning so all set for the new season now

What did this Test involve?Getting out of Bed and getting dressed. And blowing a Whistle?

No blowing of the whistle involved Smudge, but definitely have to get out of bed and get dressed.

In order to referee on the Premier division of CCL (Level 4 referee) you have to run continuously for 12 minutes and cover a minimum of 2500 metres.

Following this you have to complete 2 x 50 metre sprints in under 7.5 seconds each

whats the point of a test now,it should be done closer to the start of the new season, you've got from now untill august to turn into a right bloater

A good point duncs and one I have asked myself in the past.

I presume they have to start now in case some referees can't make this one or fail this one and require a re-ttest next month.

The FA will need to know what referees have passed so that they can appoint them from mid July

Obviously we will continue to train in order that we are at the peak of our fitness come the start of the season

I agree with FM - you could say that by choosing to take the test now, and not on the alternative date of 10 July 2011, we've started our pre-season training already!

I agree, it's not a particularly difficult test and not one that I believe represents the type of running entirely required of an official in a game; the sprints are though relevant to the AR role. As such, it's more a gauge of fitness but that's what's required by the FA of us to pass.

I will be taking mine later this year. It is not compulsory for me because I am not at supply league referee level.... yet!

As a point of discussion, this means that there is no fitness test requiement for any ARs on the Combined Counties. Some supply leagues do enforce one though.

no fitness tests for the AR's you got to be kidding me how they gonna keep up with play, now most of you are not gonna believe this but I feel sorry for the poor old Refs on this one, this means we have 1 fit match official for each game

This requirement is nothing new, I should add.

Remember that referees do mark ARs. Those that are not helping them out for whatever reason will be marked low, and as a result will start not to be offered key and Premier games, and could feasibly be removed completely.

In addition, around 50% of all Prem games are independently assessed. This includes the performance of ARs and these will also be submitted to the league for consideration for future appointments...

Bit harsh JJ

A few referees struggle to get round and I am pretty sure that some players would fail it

I agree with others though that the test is not a reflection on the type of fitness required to referee. I believe that the test for Level 2 referees is more relevant

I know one referee that wont struggle fitness wise and that is an old mate I met up with the other evening. He actually refs in the CCL and ran the London marathon in 2 hours 48 mins !!! not bad for a 53 year old !!!! I dont think I could have done that time at any time in my life, unless I was on a moped or something similar. I think he said he came 400th. Have any forumites ran the London marathon or indeed any marathon and how did their times compare?

Not surprised its a bloody good time! I dont think I could have beaten that time either. Come to think of it I am begining to doubt whether I could have managed to finish a marathon unless it was the chocolate version!!

We are not here to run marathons completely different animal compared to a footballer if you study the times and distance run by premiership players its normally between 6 and 8 km's( I think Beckham holds the record in a match ) however a simple fitness test should not be out of the question for AR's they should want to do it IMO
