NEXT SEASON-CHERTSEY TOWN

Recommended Posts

Although I am sure it will start a load of rumours, comments and general 'summer gossip' I am giving you the position I have as i said I would-

Having returned from holiday last Friday I sat down with the Chertsey Chairman and Sec for the first time since the end of the season yesterday afternoon. I had informed my Chairman of my intention to resign two weeks before the end of the season. That timing was for the reason that I did not want it seen that our promotion/title hopes were linked to my decision. Obviously I hoped we would be sucessful but the position about my resignation was not based on promotion or where we would be put. The Chairman asked for me to reconsider and we agreed to meet after the season and go from there.

I have no reason to disclose personal information but a very serious situation is happening outside of football and work and puts everything into perspective and the reality is that I do not have the time or desire to run a football club financially and timewise at least from almost top to bottom. I just wish to concentrate on football for at least the next year and had come to the conclusion that I could not take Chertsey any further without a considerable change in direction.

I have spoken to six other Clubs in the last few weeks of which only one I approached as they openely asked for candidates. The others contacted me and it is flatterring that there has been interest. I am not stupid enough to think that most of them wanted money rather than a football input but two very clearly did not and the opportunity to only manage rather than run a club was of interest. What I have discovered though is that sadly the vast majority of clubs are in a terrible financial state with no real prospect of going anywhare but bust. I've spoken to and met some great people recently that love their Clubs but my outside personal life must take priority and giving even more time to another Club is not an option at present.

Having heard what my colleagues at Chertsey have had to say yesterday I made my decision this morning to stay at the Club albeit on vastly different terms. I am completely stepping back from the running of the Club and will take no financial part. I will only deal in football matters (players and budget) and the Committee have made very clear their desire to raise a substantial amount of money to improve the team and Club. The Club now has a monthly income but in no way can support itself as it is. New financial support must be found in the form of Directors and Sponsors otherwise Chertsey will quickly fall back to where it was a few years ago. Currently we are in the enviably position of no debts except month to month bills and have an income in excess of those but to move forward we need a lot more than just relying on one person. I never wanted to leave Chertsey but things have to change. The newspaper article whilst I was away was exaggerated. I only again commented about how bad our sponsorship position was (we brought in £450 last year in total, without even a main shirt sponsor) and that I was listening to offers from other Clubs. I have been away and wanted time to deal with work and personal issues. Chertsey will again cut the budget next year as we have done for the past three years, the economic climate is desperate and we need to be sensible although our clear target is the playoffs which I firmly believe with some other financial help is achievable. The Southern League was not at first my first choice but with the re allocation of Clubs it has worked out at 20% less travelling for us and the strength of the Ryman South next season is particularly strong. Obviously Guildford still have arbitration but we will deal with that if the matter arises.

As much as I enjoy posting and reading this forum there has been no 'PR Campaign' or any other rubbish. The season finished just over four weeks ago and I seriously needed to assess my position and listen to offers from others at a very difficult point of my life. Our pre season list will now be arranged and I hope we can arrange some games with CCL teams as there will be no better preparation and I have enjoyed meeting and competing with you( well most of you!) Enjoy your summer and I look forward to reading the surefire expected abuse I will still receive!

All the best

Spencer, I wish you well.

I was privileged to watch a number of CCL Prem matches last season, for the first time, and greatly enjoyed the atmosphere at Alwyns Lane and also down at 'The Ranch'. No prima donnas just whole-hearted players doing their best.

I reckon your boys played some good stuff, and you have a talented team there. Glad you are staying with 'The Curfews' , and I hope your personal stuff gets sorted ok, and that you all go on to have a really good 2011/2012-whichever league you are in!

Good Luck Spencer, I always enjoyed our conversations together on many differing subjects and Chertsey FC, and you personally, have always been good friends of Knaphill FC. I wish you all the best.

Thanks for your honesty Spencer ! I duly acknowledge and appreciate your comments made above. What you have done for Chertsey FC is very honourable over the last 3-4 seasons and I'm sure all at Chertsey FC thank you for your time and effort to turn the club around.

Personally, I question the 'PR Campaign' and I am still of the opinion that if Chertsey were not (and still may not be) promoted, would you have continued your time at Chertsey ?

My question also is, could it be that, like many, your business is suffering 'cos as you say ' The economic climate is desperate', so your Chertsey FC budget has now dried up hence you are no longer involved financially Chertsey FC but yet will honour the players budget ? In your own words, finance will be a problem at Chertsey next season so one must assume you may have problems attracting players good enough for the Southern League ?

You say that your budget will be cut again, so one would have thought with that being the case, you will lose some players. So IF Chertsey are promoted to a higher division, the budget cut (so heaven knows what it was originally). how do you intend to make the play-offs if you/Chertsey do not get any further financial support ? ........... maybe not to cut the players budget ?

Interesting ...........

Chertseytown wish you well,in whatever you decide to do.My thoughts for what they are worth, are that the Southern League/Ryman 1 level, are in this current day,not far above C.C.L. level, for a Club to survive in,without spending loads of money.Would of been a shame, after all your efforts both Mentally and Financially in progressing Chertsey Town to the the next level,if you called it a day.Give it a shot Mate,(if the chance arises) you deserve it for all the hard work, you have put in.

I reckon you need a higher budget to get out of step 5 than you do to survive at step 4, at least in this part of the country. We know teams like Corinthian-Casuals and Whyteleafe don't spend money on players. I know there are some players who would prefer to play at step 4 on less money than play at step 5 for more. Of course, there are players who'll look at it the opposite way as well.

I don't know about play-offs but I reckon Chertsey will be alright next season. And once you're in step 4 it's virtually impossible to get relegated due to reprieves. There are supposed to be 12 teams relegated from step 4. This season there were 5. There may be another reprieve coming up as well as some club at step 3 or 4 (I forget who) look like folding before the season starts.

Why do you always look to the negative in everything?!!

The economic downturn affects every club with attendances, sponsors etc and that is what I referred too and have commented before. Chertsey Town is in an excellent financial position but I do not have the time or desire to run it as well as the football side. And I am hardly likely to say I am going to spend more and more on players budgets am I as otherwise players keep coming with crazy demands?! Perhaps you should think before you post always such negative thoughts?!!!!

Chertseytown, stop being defensive. I am not being negative at all, suggest you read my comments before posting !

Firstly I have commended you for what you have done at Chertsey FC.

Basically, IF Chettsey go up, all I was saying is if you are not financing the club but you will the players budget, which yet again it is being reduced/cut so p[layers will probably leave, and if you/Chertsey do not find additonal funding by way of a person or Company sponsorship, how do you intend to make the play-offs ?

What is wrong in asking that ? - A football question ?

I don't think some people understant how much time and effort goes into running a senior football club, you have done a great job at Chertsey and it looks like you have achieved what you set out to do CT so well done, whatever it is to do with I hope your problem will turn out ok.

Mmmnnn no reply Chertseytown so does my original and comments made above deem some concern ? . Should one suggest that the lack of response means that there would be sufficient player budget to cope with the highter Southern league level, certainly if your ambition is to make the play-offs (which is no disgrace) or will extra funds suddenly appear depending on how Chertsey progress should they get promoted ?

if Chertsey released that the budget per week was say for example £2'500, you watch all the vultures swoop down on it.

I would be surprised if you heard any club releasing any hint of what the budget may or may not be - especially pre season.

I didnt deem your post deserved a reply and I am not going to devulge our budgets to anyone surprisingly enough in preseason-we will be fine. Thankyou for your concern!

No problem and thanks Chertseytown for your reply. I knew you'd be fine 'cos as usual you will pay the necessary money to the players to keep you/Chertsey in the Southern League and good luck to you. But why do you repeatedly remark you're going to cut the players budget ? Is it to feel comfortable, to convince oneself and to keep the knockers at bay ? You can pay the players what you like. To be honest, its cost you the earth over the last 3-4 seasons on players salaries, but its possible Chertsey have eventually got promoted, be it not as Champions, which is not Chertsey's fault.
