An idiots guide to run a football club

Recommended Posts

You get a lot of attitude from so called "bigger" clubs who look down their nose at their lower ranked counterparts which would be fair enough if the club in question was run according to the standard of football they take part in.

Allow me to explain.

A step 5 club in a good catchment area should be able to attract a crowd

A step 5 club in a good catchment area should be able to attract good players

A step 5 club should not ask their manager to cut, mark out and maintain their pitch

A step 5 club should not blackmail their players to buy drinks before they are allowed (last weeks) sandwiches after a game

A step 5 club should turn their lights on an hour before kick off so teams can warm up

A step 5 club should provide the trophies for presentation night

A step 5 club should have at least sorted some friendlies out for a new incoming manager

A step 5 club should not appoint morons onto their committee

You could take this attitude from a club that was run correctly, not a club that anyone who knows anything about local football regards as a disgrace.

Smallsy since you seem to be having a pop here at one club in particular allow me to return to my original point, if i asked Ant Smith or Steve Kent to HOST Basildon United in a friendly once they had stopped laughing they would probably take offence at my request, personally im offended when a club lower down the pyramid expects to play at our ground.

Like many involved in park football you seem to hold a grudge against step 5 football the answer is simple-get a ground with floodlights then you can join us and show us how its done.We dont have a committee at Basildon United and theres certainly no morons involved at the club,23 applicants for the first team job including 7 with playing experience in the football league, next season we will run with a Under 16s,Under 18s and hire the pitch out for three other teams,we will play in the FA Cup,FA Vase and FA Youth Cup.Over the last few weeks we have successfully staged a dozen Cup Finals, next season we will continue as we always do,short of volunteers and short of money but we will just get our heads down and plough on.

There wont be a committee at Basildon United while im there, err whatsthe best way to make a decision ? ask 10 old farts sitting round a table eating sandwiches or one man who has the clubs best interests at heart ? we dont tolerate freeloaders, ego maniacs and sh it stitrers at Basildon, you may find that a lot of volunteers who have left Basildon were actually pushed and didnt jump as they would have people believe.

No one like us and we have a bad name some of which we've earned, whatever i've never set myself up as a spokesman for the Clubs Directors, things in life arent always as striaghtforward as some may wish to make out but we are what we are,as for our critics they can remain united in their bitterness and resentment of our club.

P.S. you make references to Doyley who was a legend for what he did last season, hes probably decided that he cant continue to do a full time unpaid job and he can walk away with his head held high at least with John i know he doesnt leave with any bitterness towards the club Cheers.

I think there should be a bit of give & take here. At previous clubs I've been involved We've managed to get away friendlies at Cheshunt, Halstead, Harpenden Town, Eynesbury Rovers & Basildon. All clubs who were higher than our own Step 7 status.

While at Stansted it was slightly harder because of the Cricket, but we still managed to get away to Ware, while also arranging games v other Step 5 sides from SSML & Ridgeons League.

As a manager I prefer to have control over where we go & who we play in pre-season, rather than have it arranged for me.

tell you what smallsy you come to Basildon then mid week, you will need to help out though, how about you go to tescos to buy the food to make the sandwiches, you then rush to ground to mark out pitch, then spend a hour making sandwiches, then clean out changing rooms, open up bar, work the gate, dont forget to make the refs a cup of tea when they arrive all the time wondering while they couldnt have had one before they left their house which is 5 minutes away, yeah feck it lets turn them floodlights on, then come 10-30 when youve finished sweeping out the changing rooms

YOU CAN TELL THE DIRECTORS HOW YOU'VE JUST LOST £300 HOSTING A PARK TEAM !!

For the last 2 years Redbridge have sent a team of squadies and trialists (and a couple of first teamers) to us for a pre season friendly, which i believe is beneficial for all concerned. We get a good side coming to our club and Redbridge get to give all interested players a fair chance. We have them in a friendly this season as well.

IMO Smaller clubs need to be a little more gratefully to the bigger clubs if they manage to attract them and the bigger clubs could realise that playing against smaller clubs could actually be beneficial to them......just an opinion

Rich, first of all I did not approach Basildon Utd for a friendly. I made an open request on an open forum. There may be clubs with spaces to fill, or even cancellations at a later date. At the end of the day if you don't ask you don't get.

You took it upon yourself to reply and by mocking me you set yourself up to be shot at. I retaliated and you have now gone down the sensitive route.

Don't give it out if you can't take it mate.

PS - There is more chance of me running out for England on Saturday then there is of 20 people applying for the Basildon job.

In the past i arranged the friendlies but last year Doyley did it and i will allow the new Manager to arrange his own friendlies this season we are late so that means we will have to take what we can get.

Boycie your boys can maybe come to our place again as you brought a few with you last time and you've got a few drinkers,no floodlights, bring your own sandwiches and sort me out a good drink cheers.

Rob,i wasnt mocking you, over the last few weeks many lower ranked clubs have approached me asking for a friendly at our ground and you are left with a feeling that they are 'taking the pi ss', i can see why you took it personally as it did look like my post followed on swiftly from yours,it was not meant to be directed at you.

23 applicants for Basildon job in total down to a shortlist of 8,now if you start building bridges with me and sorting me out a drink now and again one day you could be on that shortlist Cheers.

True, but that's because I work along the the same line as Smallsy that if you don't ask you don't get.

Hi Dave, how's things. To be honest our Friendleys with Redbridge over the last couple of years have been really entertaining. Because our lads are mainly Sunday league players, they see the fixture as a bit like a pre season cup final. We normally get around 50 watching plus 2nd and 3rd team players so should be a decent crowd......and the beer's decent too

Hi Dave.

I don't go on Facebook , Twitter or any other cr@p like that. That's a girly thing (i await all abuse with great fear). I remember having a team photo done there and Lydon Lynch managed to sneak into it. It was only for the reserves though. Walthamstow Avenue...now THAT was a proper football club.

Look forward to seeing you mate
