Afternoon All,

In preparation of an article I shall be writing in the next few weeks I have the following list of players who moved from Enfield FC or ETFC (in the 1980s 90's and 00's) onto Football League clubs (some via other clubs) -

Carl Richards - to AFC Bournemouth, Birmingham, Peterborough and Blackpool

Paul Furlong - to Coventry City, Watford, Chelsea, Birmingham, Sheff Utd (loan), QPR, Luton Town, Southend United, Barnet, Kettering Town

John Bailey - to AFC Bournemouth,

Dave Howell - to Barnet as a Conference club but onto Barnet in league then Southend United and Birmingham City

Paul Harding - to Barnet as a Conference club onto Notts County, Southend United and Watford (loans), Birmingham City and Cardiff City

Andy Pape - Barnet

Lee Marshall - Norwich City, Leicester City, West Brom Albion, Hull City

Mark Bentley - Southend United and Gillingham (via Aldershot Town, Gravesend and Northfleet and Dag & Red)

After the split in 2001 up until the E's demise in 2007 I can only find Nathan Smith (now a success at Yeovil who went via Waltham Forest and PBT)

I'm sure there are a few more i've missed out which all you people with knowledge can tell me about???

Looking at the list there is a obvious Bournemouth connection with Richards and Bailey + the Barnet connection and Birmingham City (Richards, Furlong, Howell and Harding)

Try these, which should help

Danny Benstock (Leyton Orient)

Robert Boyce (Colchester United)

Martin Buglione (St Johnstone) Scottish League, I know

Greg Heald (Peterborough, Barnet, Leyton Orient, Rochdale)

Peter Hinds (Dundee Unted) again, Scottish but why not

Matt Joseph (Cambridge United, Leyton Oreint)

Tony Kelly (loads)

Tony Kinsella (Doncaster Rovers)

Lee Marshall (Norwich City, Leicester Ciy, West Brom)

Michael Rodosthenous (Stranraer) another one for Scotland

Gary Smith (Barnet)

Glen Southam (Dagenham, Barnet)

Paul Underwood (Rushden, Luton)

There are also loads who were with EFC on loan and went on to play in the Football League. Do you want those as well?

Can't believe I forgot Greg heald and Paul underwood.

Did Benstock play for the O's before the E's?

Yes, Any other names for loan players appreciated. Are you thinking of players like Grazioli?

The goalkeeper Mark Cousins who played on loan for Town 2 or 3 seasons ago is now Colchester United's first

choice keeper I do believe.

Also remember Eric Young playing for EFC in his latter years :-s and there is the amazing Paul Moran of course. Both players having come down from a higher level of course, rather than the other way round.

I'll definitely add a bit about Budgie.

His thumbs up at the end of the game was legendary. And when he got over the halfway line to the cheers of the town end to take a penalty when we were up by about 6 goals only to be waved back by George Borg and Graham Roberts in the dug out.

Yep. OK, deep breath, here we go:

Paul Atkin (Bury, York, Leyton Orient (loan) and Scarborough)

Guiliano Grazioli (Peterborough, Swindon, Bristol Rovers, Barnet)

Hakan Hayrettin (Barnet, Torquay (loan))

Paul Holsgrove (loads)

Gareth Howells (Torquay)

Tony Lynch (Barnet)

Derek Payne (Barnet, Southend, Watford, Peterborough)

Gary Phillips (Barnet)

Benstock definitely played for Orient after EFC.

Also forgot about Burridge, as he played for Dumbarton, Falkirk and Manchester City after he left us.

And not forgetting.......

Sid Crowl (Spurs)

Len Shackleton (Sunderland & Newcastle)

Terry Hurlock (Millwall & Liverpool?)

Austin Hayes (Southampton)

Robin Friday (Reading & Cardiff)

And many others. If needed, I can go back further with a list. Len Shackleton anyone?

  • 3 weeks later...

I'm still writing the article and need a little bit of help from people (I think Jim Cunnen might be able to assist) -

1) How Many goals/apps for the following players for the E's -

Paul Furlong

John Bailey

Lee Marshall

Carl Richards pre 1986 and then 1992 onwards

Greg Heald

2) When did Len Shackleton play for the E's??? I think it was only a handful of apps?

This article now appears on The Cold End site - cracking read, as usual, really brings back some good memories.

I see mention has also been made of some of those players who came to EFC after league football. Whilst he didn't have the best of times at EFC, playing a handful of games in that fateful Conference relegation season, one of the most famous must be former Liverpool favourite, Alan Kennedy. Known affectionately as 'Barney Rubble' amongst Reds, he scored the winning goals in two European Cup Finals, the 1-0 winner against Real Madrid and the winning penalty against Roma!

ETFC expert - I have added a bit about Alan Kennedy's brief stay with the E's.

Steph - Peter Taylor is mentioned loads in the article. Furlong signed for Watford when he was assistant to Steve Perryman and he signed Lee Marshall twice (for Leicester and Hull) as well as giving him a cap for England U21's.

Apart from spelling 'second world war' as 'first world war' in the Len Shackleton bit :)
