AFC Wimbledon

Recommended Posts

We were in the Ryman League at the time AFC Wimbledon started (from the bottom!). When it came to the vote our then chairman couldn't believe the amount of clubs who voted against them joining the league. Most of the clubs in the bottom divisions voted in favour of them joining but loads of the bigger clubs voted against. One noteable exception was Aldershot Town who did want them to join the league. It's strange how you won't find a club on the internet who admit to voting against AFC at the time but there were plenty.

Apparantly our chairman made a bit of a speech after the vote thanking all the bigger clubs for screwing up the smaller clubs by denying us the £5000 a game against AFC would have bought in. We knew at the time that AFC would be in the Ryman League through promotion anyway so, to this day, I still don't understand why some clubs voted against them.

When we hosted the Frimley Green v AFC Wimbledon game I was one of the gate stewards. There was one [****!!****] who slated our ground which is always laughable and beyond contempt coming from a club who didn't have their own ground, but one prick out of 750 punters isn't bad.

I remember it well - my only experience of a Ryman League AGM. 11 out of 88 Chairman either abstained or voted against - they thus fell short of the 95% majority required to vote them in at such short notice. CCL welcomed them a week later with open arms

............ AND LOOK WHAT THEY DID FOR THE OTHER CCL CLUBS. UPGRADED FACILITIES, PAID FOR SEASON WAGES (AT SOME CLUBS), PREVENTED CLUBS GOING DOWN + MORE !! HOW SHORTSIGHTIDNESS IS THAT FROM THE RYMAN CLUBS, PERHAPS THEY WERE SCARED KNOWING THAT THEY WOULD BE A FORCE IN THEIR LEAGUE ?........STRANGE MENTAL THOUGHTS........

Shortsightedness?? Lol....we thought the same thing...they were worried about another strong club in the league, one that if they were that strong would be gone in 12 months.... It's why we like the CCL and not the Ryman, even if Turvey was the one that voted against MK.

Congrats Dons, never forget losing 8-0 with Cove away in an evening game on my 21st and the crowd singing happy birthday a few times. Well deserved and hope they can continue to rise from here!!

:applaus:

You're never the guy who used to post on our guestbook at the time? But that Adam Watts was the keeper! Never put two and two together as you aren't a keeper!

HAHA, it's me alright! I had a few seasons as a kepper after a bad injury and told it wasn't worth playing on pitch again as my achillies wouldn't hold up, what do they know!

Born and raised Geordie, relocated as a child in Surrey and we had Wimbledon season tickets aswel as our Newcastle ones. Saw may fine games at Selhurst and wanting to grow up as a Vinnie, Marcus Gayle, Jason Euell and even Hans Segars at times  I remember the fourth game after AFC clinched the title the game before, I was asked to do an interview for the site and match day program and we also greeted the squad with a guard of honour. I was never impressed with letting Coops second half penalty in and reading after in the paper and online that I went the wrong way on purpose so he could break the scoring record!!

Good old days eh!!

Dont even start on the Ryman Clubs !!! We were an associate member in Div 2 which is where they were due to go. We got 1 vote per 6 clubs so despite the whole of Div 2 wanting them idiots from the higher rung voted against. Very short sighted.

I think the reason some clubs voted against them, could be the same season that a lot of CCL forumites seem against Windsor coming in the Premier league, they believed that they should start at the bottom of the pyramid. That ,and the fear factor that a team is going to come in and walk the league. Although it was a bad decision for Wimbledon, it was not THAT bad for the Ryman clubs, because they got their £5000 game against AFC, only a couple of years later. The plus point for AFC is clear for all to see, the good will that they have from just about everyone in the CCL, and all the leagues as they pass through.

They applied to the bottom of the pyramid at the time. In the season they were formed, Ryman 2 and the CCL (only one division then) were both step 4 with both feeding Ryman 1. I think the only difference was that two or three Ryman 2 clubs were assured promotion to Ryman 1 whereas it was only one CCL club and that was subject to ground grading which most teams didn't have back then.

I can't believe how much the system's changed in just nine years looking back on it.

Yes I was there NG, think it was £5 or £6? Baking hot day and no cover. I remember the barrier behind the goal giving way when we scored as everyone surged forward! Don't think there is any film of it, none that i've seen anyway.

Dug out the programme (Wed 21st April 2004). Page 19 'Lifelong Dons fan' Adam Watts on playing against his club! Also page 26, Adam Watts sums up Cove's recent history.

I note the Cove Manager that day was the very CCL sounding Salvatore Di Prima - whatever happened to him?

I was there too that hot day. A friend lived across the road in one of the side streets so we got there before we used Sandhurst's bar. Wonderful day out and Sandhurst made us feel very welcome.

I have never seen footage of the game, and not even sure where my photos are from it, of the match and hay bales!

Sorry, of course there is footage of the Sandhurst game. It's on the first season DVD, just watched it back!

Probably got Wattsy's 8 goals conceded on the second year DVD too.

That would be pretty cool to see one day - all the CCL grounds packed out.

LOL - durr....that was one of the most watched DVD's by my daughter when she was 4 or 5 yo. She loved seeing all the goals fly in one after another....luckily she won't expect that next season...well not in the oppositions goal anyway...

HAHA! I took have that same programme! I also have it on my shelf sitting next to the following home match, I believe it was Reading Town and also the official dvd AFC sent to me a few weeks after!! They were kind enough in that season to allow me free entry to the home games when I wasn't playing, mainly went to the Wednesday night games with my Dad who also was given a free pass and was given a shirt after that 8-0 as a birthday present, I'd rather have had the points OR taken the penalty that we missed in the opening minutes, especially as I was penalty taker!!

Just out of interest TRS, where you at the wet away game that season at Oak Farm where we were beating by a jammy 35-40 yarder shot-cross from Dobbo is his early years? I had a very good game then and be interesting if there was any footage?

As for Salv, he went to Farnham from Cove to be John Cassidy's no.2 where I followed a few months after and then he took over before struggling and being let go. As mentioned now at Fleet Spurs. I used to be fairly close to Salv on a personal side, but growing up and other commitments etc meant we lost contact, a decent bloke but let his 150% passion boil over at the wrong times. Funnily enough Knappers keeper Richard Shelley is going out with his eldest daughter and has been for years, so kinda has a link with CCL I guess
