Congrats Dons, never forget losing 8-0 with Cove away in an evening game on my 21st and the crowd singing happy birthday a few times. Well deserved and hope they can continue to rise from here!!

:applaus:

You're never the guy who used to post on our guestbook at the time? But that Adam Watts was the keeper! Never put two and two together as you aren't a keeper!

NG - they dismantled the goals straight away. Maybe they were scared we'd take 'em as souvenirs! cheesy%20%282%29.gif

Oh and our keeper, Seb Brown, who saved 2 pens yesterday comes from a family of Dons fans and was at the very first game at Sandhurst as a 12 year old.

I remember playing them away when i was 18 playing for Cobham back then. We were winning 1-0 Ricky Elmer (R.I.P) scored and then in the last 10 mins they smashed 4 goals passed us. I will never forget playing in front of that massive crowd, (back to school on monday and you ginger **** i got) didnt care tho it was quality to play in. There was nearly 3,000 people there that day.

They have done so much for the CCL so congratulations and all the best AFC!.

Firstly can I say how nice it is to read the comments on Wimbledon's victory. It just reaffirms the wonderful hospitality we recevied at (virtually all) the CCL clubs back in our early, and makes the CCL the only league I look back on with fondness.

Apart from giving us the start, that the Rymans teams refused us (legitimately, I may add), I enjoyed the 2 seasons in the CCL and am glad to revisit some of the grounds when we play them in the SSC/LSC. We always get a friendly welcome and it is great to see improvements made to the grounds.

Well now that we are in the league the days of turning up lateish, having a beer, mixing with opposition fans etc will cease to be......I can see my visits to watch RPV becoming more frequent.

AFC Wimbledon not voted in at an AGM. Dark days for the FA they were !!!!!

In my time as an official I was appointed twice to do AFC Wimbledon matches as a fourth official. What I liked about the people who ran the club was their attitude. None of this "better then them" rubbish I have seen from bigger clubs in lower leagues. Just the overwhelming feeling of relief that they had been welcomed into a league by clubs. Good Luck to them in the league.

That is what the vast majority of us felt, the relief and the welcome..two separate parts to the equation.

Many of us still think we owe the CCL a huge debt as it is questionable whether the momentum would have been lost had the club had to take a year out from playing football, with supporters drifting from the game or going elsewhere.

Well done to all at A.F.C. Wimbledon,a remarkable achievement by all concerned. Can anyone inform if this was the fastest rise ever from Non League to Football League.

Not sure about quickest non-league rise to football league, but my stats for the day are Swansea going up from the old 4th division to 1st in sucessive seasons . They then finished 6th in the 1st, then got relegated the next season, then got relegated again! Quickest rise and fall is probably Gretna, 2005 they won the 3rd division, 2006 won the 2nd, 2007 won the 1st, 2008 they got relegated from the spl and liquidated!!

Northampton Town did the same as Swansea, they were promoted from div 4 in 62/63, then went 3, 2 , 1(65/66) then they did the exact same in reverse, 2, 3, 4 arriving back in 1969, the REAL swinging sixties, roller coaster or what !!!!

Regarding non league, no one can have achieved better than AFC because of course its in only recent football history that we had guaranteed promotion, previously clubs had to apply for election to the FL and normally the league clubs voted the bottom club back in.

The only non league story of similar heroics I can remember is Welling United, they started as an u15 sunday side, eventually switched to saturdays and became members of the Spartan League. They were promoted to the old Athenian league in the late 70's and took just 6 seasons to make the conference, they stayed there I think for about 10/12 seasons, maybe more, then got relegated back to the Southern League. Now of course they're back in the conference south, about last 6 or so seasons i reckon

Here endeth the lesson for today

We were in the Ryman League at the time AFC Wimbledon started (from the bottom!). When it came to the vote our then chairman couldn't believe the amount of clubs who voted against them joining the league. Most of the clubs in the bottom divisions voted in favour of them joining but loads of the bigger clubs voted against. One noteable exception was Aldershot Town who did want them to join the league. It's strange how you won't find a club on the internet who admit to voting against AFC at the time but there were plenty.

Apparantly our chairman made a bit of a speech after the vote thanking all the bigger clubs for screwing up the smaller clubs by denying us the £5000 a game against AFC would have bought in. We knew at the time that AFC would be in the Ryman League through promotion anyway so, to this day, I still don't understand why some clubs voted against them.

When we hosted the Frimley Green v AFC Wimbledon game I was one of the gate stewards. There was one [****!!****] who slated our ground which is always laughable and beyond contempt coming from a club who didn't have their own ground, but one prick out of 750 punters isn't bad.

I remember it well - my only experience of a Ryman League AGM. 11 out of 88 Chairman either abstained or voted against - they thus fell short of the 95% majority required to vote them in at such short notice. CCL welcomed them a week later with open arms
